I can't believe nobody has mentioned Grave of the Fireflies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/) yet. Granted, it's anime, but it still has as much emotional depth and drama as any of the better asian films; probably one of the best.

My favorite is To Live (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110081/), which I also can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned yet. It's about a man with a gambling problem who reforms himself, and after losing everything due to his gambling, his family must now also persevere through the Communist revolution in China. It sounds like a played out storyline, but if it is, it's the one with the best execution. Everything about this movie is the awesome. If you're really looking for an asian film that definitively embodies the scope of asian cinema, check out this classic. You'll cry, you'll laugh, and you'll feel heartwarmed. If anybody else has seen this movie, vouch for it so that I don't look like a homo.

one of my favorite would be blue spring..to me i would say this is better than any of the new things that are out today. blue spring may lack originality just by a little, but it's something that'd i would keep on my hd, because it's a very decent movie. high school gangs and whatever, been done since who knows when, but who cares? one idea comes from another.

Ong Bak Muay Thai Warrior. I think that's the name. This is one of my favorite martial arts movies of all times! This guy is phenomenal, and there's no one like him making movies nowadays. Period.

He also has another movie out which I haven't gotten to see yet. Should get on acquiring it immediately.
"You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood."

If you guys are looking for an Asian horror movie, I suggest watching "Shutter". It's a thai movie and this movie really freaked me out.... The ending was unexpected.

Storm Riders is a good samurai/fantasy movie as well.

I have to agree that Shutter is a eerie show, and it's one of the best of recently years. And yeah, the ending was good.

I resently saw Ran by the master Akira Kurosawa. It really feels like alot of animes today have been inspired by Kurosawas movies. The way people talked in the movie was really close to the way people talk in animes. For such an old movie it has rally well made battle scenes.
