Report: Chappelle in mental health facility
Entertainment Weekly reports that the star checked in Wednesday

NEW YORK - Comedy Central star Dave Chappelle has checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday.

    advertisement
The comedians whereabouts and condition have been unknown since Comedy Central abruptly announced last week that the planned May 31 launch of the third season of Chappelles Show had been postponed and production halted.

Chappelle flew from Newark, N.J., to South Africa on April 28 for treatment, said the magazine, quoting a source close to the show it would not identify. Entertainment Weekly said it had corroborating sources for its story.

We dont know where he is, Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox said. Weve heard about South Africa. We dont know. We havent talked to Dave.

Chappelles spokesman, Matt Labov, would not comment on the magazines story.

It seems like the issues hes contending with are really quite serious, said Dade Hayes, a senior editor at Entertainment Weekly. It isnt a case of him spending a weekend someplace recuperating from exhaustion.

The magazines sources say Chappelle is still in the facility, which was not named, Hayes said. Chappelles representatives have denied that the comedian was abusing drugs.

Chappelle reportedly signed a $50 million deal with Comedy Central for two more seasons of his show, a payday made possible because of the explosive sales of the shows first season DVD.

The magazine said Chappelle had shot four to five episodes worth of sketches for the new season, but none of its onstage introductions.

I dunno what to make of this story. At first when I heard about it I thought it was just an inet rumor but it's shown up at other 'trusted' sites. I guess the business really took a toll on him and I can imagine how tough it must be for him to come up with new material to meet or better his previous work.

That would be a fucking shame. "fucking pay me!!" was this guys motto. For him to lose all that money over not doing this third season would suck majorly for him. The issues must be serious. I don't even know what to make of this. If he's stressed out over new material then obviously we have a problem. But its better than other alternatives which are drug abuse, despite the staunch denial of his spokesperson, or some other more serious issue that could destroy his career. I hope he recovers.

Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood."

    Chappelle is greatness.

But, I was in the same boat you were. I thought it was a joke when my co-worker brought it up, yesterday.

He admitted himself, though. And, it's said in some places (I did not read the article you posted. Apologies if I repeat ..) that the business was really pressuring him.

Although, for the 2-year $50M contract he's got .. I'd do nothing but sit on my ass and come up with stupid shit to make people laugh at. Plus, they included him on the DVD sales for Season 2 (he didn't get shit from his Season 1 sales, which sold over 2M copies).

Like Barles, and a lot of my friends, I hope for a safe and swift recovery and that whatever is wrong is nothing life threatening or terminal.

wow thats wild, my sister just told me about that today. i hope the lords watching over him. i would be surprised if he's having such a problem finding new ideas, it's only the third season. if anything he should have more ideas because he has more money to bring in people capable of coming up with great ideas.

apparently it's not true. I think he said he saw a psychiatrist for like 45 mins. Said he has to think things over, not sure he wants to deal with all the fame and attention. I read this on the internet, don't know if it's true.
