It's getting more and more serious. I like very much the fatalistic attitudes of the SOF. Somehow suits them very finely. And it's also nice how they aren't afraid of blood in this series. Although it remains to be seen if it only bleeds freely on the opponents' side, or if we are going to lose somebody also from the Gekko-Go crew eventually.
NO NO NO NO, give me back my OP2 you useless bastards!!!! I definately didn't see the Charles situation turning out that way at all, can't wait for 28 to finish dl...
Wow, episode 27... that was some wicked stuff. For a mostly mecha anime this episode sported some really good covert ops and stealth battle. Holland was friggin scary as hell early on in the episode, and Charles...
Man, that was just raw. Using the gun to lift up the bulletproof vest and firing off until there's nothing left, raw. And the end, holy shit, if it already wasn't messy enough...
I also got the feeling that someone from the Gekko-go will die sometime in the future, it just seems to always happen that way around the end of season 2 or beginning of season 3 in anime. One important character from the bad guy's side dies, then one from the good guy's. My money is on Moon-doggie or Stoner getting killed, especially after Stoner's words in 27.
Some questions I hope are going to be answered: What is going on with the Nirvash? Is it permanently linked with Renton/Eureka's minds now?
What exactly is Ray's deal with childbirth and how did it get that way? (answered in ep. 28)
Is Eureka even a human being? Ray certainly made it seem like she wasn't...
Episode 28, here I come!
Oh,and I concur on the generally negative consenus about the new opening.
Edit: I love the small visual effects that they do so well in this anime. The expressions on people's faces say more than most dialogues, gestures are usually meaningful. Best of all, as someone mentioned recently, is the small details that are done so well in this show.
I love that the blood wasn't all washed off from the Nirvash. At first you see just a smudge on the white paint in the blurry foreground, then they go to a long-shot where you can see the whole Nirvash, including the arm that is still bloody despite obviously being washed. Then they cut to a running shower. Then to the messed up inside of Charles/Ray's kitchen, and what is in the very center of the initial shot? Spilt tomatoe sauce all over the floor. Slow pan up towards the empty table. New shot: focus on the table from above, everything white except for the RED condiment tray in the center. Next shot: inside the refrigerator, a slow pan downward ending on uncooked meat. Oh the visual innuendo's are beautiful in this show!
28 was great as well. Damn this show kicks some major ass
Humans are different from animals. We must die for a reason. Now is the time for us to regulate ourselves and reclaim our dignity. The one who holds endless potential and displays his strength and kindness to the world. Only mankind has God, a power that allows us to go above and beyond what we are now, a God that we call "possibility".
Ray's humming throughout eps 28 was some of the most unnerving and creepy background noise I've heard in a while. Once she started that, I knew we'd seen the end of her by the end of the eps.
What an amazing end at that! I expected LFO/KLF combat, and we actually got ship to ship close combat. Ken-Goh has to be the greatest gunner in the entire world. Not only did he help Talho move the Gekko-Go out of the way, he hit Ray with one.
Most touching of all was Ray reaching for her severed arm to grab the ring. Very moving. I'd seen things like it before, quite often actually, but this time it actually came off really well. Ray seemed so small as she was struggling to get to it.
Ray was sterilized when Adrock Thurston and researchers, whom I can only assume Eureka was a participant in, set off the first Seven Swell with the Nirvash. Ray blames Eureka, the only reason I can guess is because Eureka must have been present, and piloted the Nirvash for the test.
Talho's reaction to Renton being the only available donor was very interesting. Talho is obviously sore about Diane and Holland's relationship, whatever happened there. I'm hoping that we'll find out what happened soon.
Renton clearly trusts and loves Eureka enough to tell her everything about him. But Eureka doesn't want to tell him about the horrible things she's done.
Finally, who are all the people in the ending? I recognize Maeter (she's obvious), and I think Talho and Anemone, but they are draw strange, as if Talho is in high school and Anemone is in her 20's. I suppose the last one must be Eureka, similarly drawn older.
They should've had Ray and Charles kill at least a couple Gekko-Go members. Half of them have are just filler characters anyway. I don't even remember the bald guy having any lines before this. Also, those three kids are probably the biggest downfall of the show. They need to be killed asap.
EDIT: Double post happened due to laggyness.
Where have you been? Good guys can't die in anime! That's what the villains are for. Seriously though, I agree that Ray and Charles WOULD have killed some Gekko State members, but they were all hiding. Ray happened to run into Talho, who was with three big distractions (Renton, Eureka, the children). Charles ran into Holland. Considering those matchups I don't see how the outcome was unrealistic.Originally posted by: badass

No way Jose. Maeter and Link do get annyoing at times, but Maurice I like. He is more mature and I think it is going to become really important that he didn't rush to Eureka's side (halfway in episode 28). I think its going to get to Eureka.Originally posted by: badass

Just watched episode 27 and 28... Both great episodes...
Holland kicks alot of ass... He didn't think twice about killing Charles... 3 or so bullets to the stomach, it was awesome...
I wish Renton would've killed Ray himself though, or maybe even Eureka... that would've been great...
We want more, more..mooore!!
Holland was great in these espisodes, when he lifted the vest and started firing without second thoughts was awesome, and when Ray trashed the place I liked how well detailed and drawn everything was, also when she was trying to get to the ring it just brought up another emotional level. Awesome espisodes altogether.
There was one of the bombshells. I knew it was going to be something like that, but I didn't at all expect exactly that.
Really big drop in animation quality, but if they are going to save their budget on eps like this, where only the dialogue matters, I'm fine with that. I'd rather have crap eps now, and the end of the series look great, rather than see their budget die right before the last ten eps.
After watching episode 29...
Yeah, it was a fairly good episode... I didn't really notice the drop in animation you talk about, but whatever... We knew that Eureka had some sort of connection with the Coralians, but I never expected for her to be one... I wonder what that says of Renton, since I remember Holland saying that no one exept Eureka had ever witnessed the "dream world" Renton experienced when he went into the Coralian...
I think what the military and Holland were both implying is that neither side had ever managed to get into the Coralian. Since Adrock believed them to be sentient, then that probably means a great deal about Renton, since that would imply that Renton was accepted by that one into the dream world.
Also, if Eureka is one, that must mean that in some way at the least, Anemone is one. Maybe that has something to do with her psychosis and why they pump her full of rage medicine all the time. Was she torn from their world where Eureka was willingly given to this side? Or is she some synthetic military made one?
The thing I noticed early on was Eureka has a red circle (usually appearing as cresent moons, unless her eyes are fully open) in each of her eyes, whereas Anemone has a single red slash through each. I wonder if there is any signifigance to that difference. It makes them both similar and different for sure.
When Renton went into the Coralian, did Dominic also went into it? Or did he just went to get Anemone after the Coralian was over?
Didn't he just go afterwards, to get Anemone back? Well, I don't remember that well anymore. But a nice episode nevertheless. I suppose an explanation like that was evident. I always thought Eureka would be some sort of hybrid, but she seems to be a real thing. But there is a definitive difference between her and Anemone for some reason. It looks like Anemone isn't quite stabile, so maybe she's a hybrid, imperfect model, or synthetic like Ryllharu said.
Who were those three guys who reported about Dominic? Is the military spying its own agents, or were those some rebel dudes reporting to Gekko State?
Probably the military themselves.... Gekko State wouldn't bother with such a small fry... And the main importance is Dominic saying "How can I possibly report this?" which means that when he goes to report he'll be caught in a lie...
I always knew Eureka wasn't human. The extent of her "not being human" was the only thing I wondered about. The fact that she can speak with the Nirvash (which is probably another conscious being), was almost absorbed by the Skurve in the old mine (a sorta 'come back home' phenomenon) and just her general behavior were pretty big hints towards her being Coralian.
I wonder about the difference between Compac Drives and LFOs, between Eureka and Anenome (I think she's also Coralian, but like Ryllharu suggested, one that was forced into human form) and whether Coralians are all of the same conciosness or not.
Compac Drives seem to be like souls/spirit compacted into a fuel source, like Mako in FF7. LFO's remind me of Evas. They're certainly alive, but why do they have those forms if their natural state is frozen/stuck in Skurve (back to the cave episode again)? Were they once walking beings, or the first attempts of Coralians to take on human form?
I think Ryllharu hit the Anenome/Eureka thing right on the head. The difference in there eyes... I've often wondered myself. Has anyone else noticed that Eureka's red circle changes depending on her moods?
Close-ups of Eureka in this episode are only when she's upset. Further back shots show no "red" in her eyes when she's neutral or in a good mood. Could just be lack of detail...
6:20 - Renton has just gotten upset about Charles and Ray. Eureka says she feels her 'choosing' Renton over Holland is why Holland killed the two. The "red" in her eyes is a half circle, thick at the bottom.
18:47 - Eureka is very upset, talking one on one with Renton about her being a Coralian. The "red" in her eyes is almost a complete circle.
Eureka "chose" Renton. What do you all think that means exactly? I think it was that she "chose" him to enter the Coralian, where no human has been before. Like the Coralians presented Eureka in human form as a show of their good-will to Adrock, Eureka brought Renton back to show the Coralians that some humans can co-exist with Coralians. Holland has flaws that would have made the Coralians restless if he had been presented. Also... Diane, Renton's sister, appeared for a flash in the Coralian. I think that indicates she may have been there ahead of time. If I had to guess I'd say she was "the first diplomat". I wouldn't be surprised if it was her that suggested to the Coralians that Eureka be created in human form. Just my guess.
If I remember correctly Domic did NOT go into the Coralian. He didn't appear in any of the 'dream' sequences there, only afterwards in the crater. Those guys trailing him are probably not from Dewey's squadron (as I always got the feeling Dewey trusted Dominc), but I'm betting on the other military.
I like how they subtly hinted at Dominc being followed early on in the episode. He is at Adrock's memorial and suddenly looks around. But he doesn't see anyone. That was a good one.
Also I liked how after Talho's rant and revealing everything they drop back to a shot of the kitchen and the sign reads "Today's Recommendation."
Moondoggie's reaction to the sparkling bathroom was also hilarious.
Ahah, I forgot about Moondoggie's reaction. He screams like something horrible has happened, and then you see him cleaning too.
I always thought the changes in Eureka's red circle was because her eyes were either wide open, or some variation of half-lidded. Interesting theory though. Do Anemone's change their angle relative to flat? It should be easier to tell because the mood-swing queen changes about 10 times a minute.
As for their two particular shapes, it's neat to note that a circle and a line are about as opposite as two objects can be. One implies completeness, and the other does not. (This is kinda obvious, but I felt like pointing it out.)
I like the idea about the exchange with Eureka and Renton, but I always got the feeling that something worse than that happened to Diane. They didn't seem too emotional about the Coralian, as if something bad like that had happened before, more that they just wanted to make absolutely sure they got into it first.
