Well DBZ was awesome. OK it didn't have a story that would blow you away, but it was far from boring. Although I do now in hindsight wish that there was a bit more emphasis on fighting techniques than just your power level, I still enjoyed it hugely. I still don't get why people now just turn around and start bashing DBZ... sure it wasn't perfect but remember new anime creators should (in theory) be able to learn from the mistakes of past anime's and carry on the good points. Anyway, my two cents is that DBZ rules, and there is no point in being childish and saying oh no that anime is crap don't go there and this anime rules.... that approach just means that you automatically cut away about half of the anime out there. Everyone has their own tastes... if someone doesn't like an anime fine... it's there for enterainment, not to start a cult. I don't go around flaming anyone who doesn't think the same thing I do about DBZ.

mmmm....(nod sagely). totally agree. may i add the ninja fights are original and fun to watch whereas the fights in DBZ are monotonous and boring. oh and another thing when Naruto power up, he dont make constipating noises like all the DBZ character.

quit saying DBZ was so bad, if it was then why was it #1 in japan for a little while (cant remember exact time so dont ask) DBZ for its time was awesome, sure it dragged things on and exeggerated alot, but at the time was still like no other, like Pokemon, that was the shittiest thing round, yet it made billions in 2 years, with cards, now its only cause DBZ is old and youve seen so much other stuff, think back to the time, most likely you loved it, this is why the long scenes bugged you, cause you wanted to get back to the action, you telling me gohan turning ss2 wasnt good, anyway as for Naruto, quit complaing, we obviously know its gonna be the next DBZ for action and popularity, now hopefull it wont drag on as long but its still going to have similarities.

true i enjoyed DBZ but during when Goku was young, i like it because the plot was original and funny, not clinche. but after the Raditz episode, everything went monotonous.

I liked db, and dbz. Naruto is more like db than dbz. Db had more of a plot and a direction. Ya Naruto goes ssj (kyubi), and uses his amazing amounts of ki(chakra) to use the tri form (kage bushin), and sometimes he pulls out the ole kamahamaha(ras), and of course Goku (Naruto) will get beaten badly for 15 minutes vow that he can't lose... Think about all the people he made promises to, get back up and… 3 episode later he will finally win.
Db/dbz were around for what 10 years???? They went everywhere and did everything…. of course others are going to seemingly copy it. Db is like the simpsons of the anime world. Sidenote.. I remember someone saying something like and I quote...... "Oh gawd, Naruto is becoming to popular... Its no longer an alternative anime; blah I'm sick of it now". Some people are just fans of trying to be leet and like things that others don't. i.e they liked dbz till it became cool to dislike it.
With all this said they are as much different as they are similar
sorry I'm sleepy it might not make sense.
edit* ohyeah the real test will be if Gaara pulls a vegeta and becomes good.... In truth I wouldn't mind.

DBZ I founf to have a rather good story personally, even the it was repetetive it still had a good story for each repetetive saga, now BUU i didnt like, but Cell I loved, I dunno I think too many people bash dbz too much...

Well... That is kind of justified being that Kishimoto's biggest inspiration IS Toriyama, as he said himself in his "interview with the artists" in the manga. All in all, we're going to see alot of similar traits from Dragonball in Naruto, but as long as the storyline continues to develop like it is, I dont' see a problem with Naruto going in that direction.

Hmmm... I haven't noticed anything like that. The only thing what has reminded me of Dragonball Z was when Lee used his high speed combo against Gaara. Seriously, in the Freiza saga, Frieze form 2 was over 200, 000 pl stronger than Picollo but Piccolo still won and Goku was a lot weaker than Cell and Goku was fighting evenly. You can't say that it's just about power.
And Dragon Ball is a lot less predictible than Naruto. They spent episodes of Goku training and he still doesn't have to win. In the tournaments he faces people of equal strength and he doesn't just go do a kyubi power thing, he wins by skills or loses by someone more skilled than him ex. Master Roshi vs Goku fight. If Dragon Ball was just about power then Goku wouold have lost a lot of times, a lot of his fights, he was even in power.
It's better to compare the Dragon BallZ manga to the Naruto manga. Since the manga caught up to the anime so it was dragged out.

I'm tired of people constantly comparing DBZ and Naruto. Give it up already! Every forum I've been to with a naruto topic has compared naruto with DBZ.
OK it has some similarities but there are many animes that are similar to eachother
for an example trigun and cowboy bebop, they are both in the future and shooting and stuff and the people has some background problems. macross and other mecha animes they are all similar to eachother. the difference is always the storyline.

I don't mean to flame, but I guess you have a short attention span or something. You should have read the rest. The only time the Earth was targeted form destruction was with Cell and Frieze. But anyways I said DRAGON BALL. Goku never died in Dragon Ball, and he lost lots of time even after spending a season training and side quests, you never know when he would win or lose. Like during the fight with Master Roshi, there were a lot of episodes dedicated to training and all and it went from a Goku turning into a monkey to the moon being destroyed to a final showdown, where Goku got up and whoever said I am the champion wins. Goku was got up and he was in the middle of his sentence and he fell down and Master Roshi got up and said it. You wouldn't have expected that. Or the Goku vs. Tien fight was COMPLETELY unpredictible, at the very end it was kind of obvious Goku was going to win till out of nowhere he got hit and lost. Naruto as I said many times is predictible. I personally think Dragon Ball is a LOT better than Naruto. Although I grew up watching DBZ(in it's original version), I think Naruto is better than DBZ but not Dragon Ball.

I absolutely agree. There was a time for the DB series to be the king of this anime style and that time is over. Now Naruto is going farther , deeper, and more intellegently in to that sort of style, better then 90% of all the other anime out there. Anime fans worldwide have been waiting for an anime creator to step up and make a show like this and finally its happened.
Yes, its true that both DB and Naruto are drawn out, and thats the selling point. I do think that Naruto has much, much deeper of a story tho, encompassing countless characters and plot lines. The formula for DBZ was
#1 - Get beat by an incredibly strong baddie
#2 - Power up way stronger then before
#3 - Beat him in the most dramatic way possible
You can obviously see this same pattern in Naruto because it sells. The difference is that the pattern is way more diversitifed and elaborated upon then DBZ.
Anyways, they're similar, no question about it. I'm just glad that Naruto's here to be enjoyed (and Im glad for broadband internet http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

You guys have to look at one thing:
First off let me say that Dragonball is my favorite series and always will be. It was the first anime I ever watched in the original format way before it became popular here. Not only did the problem occur with the anime cathcing up to the manga, but Akira Toriyama himself stated that he wanted to end the seiries many times. His original plan was to end it after they found the 7 dragonballs. He also wanted to end it after the Freeza saga, and again at the Cell saga. The reason he continued it was because of its popularity and people encouraging him to. This is also a reason why there are a lot of plot holes. Almost every show has been compared to Dragonball also, I don't know why, and i never agree.
If you want to see a big similarity, take a look at Hunter x Hunter(which I can't wait for the new OVA). I started watching both around the same time and you see many similarities. They are still two completely different animes. At the moment, Naruto and Hunter x Hunter are my two favorite animes running.
The truth is this will never be settled. For every person that has a reason to like Dragonball there is another that has a reason to hate. It happens to a lot of good animes.

Man i've made this exact post a while ago, reguardless i dismiss the tards that say Naruto is like DBZ, their logic consists of over generalization. Its like saying that Lady Blue is like Naruto because they both have female charcters in them. Thats just crap logic. I'd ignore them. By the way EVERYONE who does Shounen is influenced by toriyama hes the godfather of all anime of its genre.

Personally i find that naruto is only similar in the way things can be really drawn out. Not always a bad thing (i relish seeing more of certain characters). But the primary difference is that whereas dragonball (or DRAGONBALL Z, just to please unidentified) the fights where pretty much one on one. With their being one major bad guy. In Naruto (especially now at this point in the manga) there are mutiple enemies at the same time. Also naruto is more character driven (and has much more character development) and theme driven (acknowledgement, self love vs love for others, etc)

people are only saying that because the 3rd chuunin exam is a tournament like DBZ often has... Just because an anime has a tournament doesn't mean it's a DBZ clone. YuYu Hakusho had the Dark Tournament, and I bet people said it was copying DBZ also. Naruto might have a few DBZ similarities because kishimoto did say he loved and was inspired by DBZ, but it's totally different

Naruto gets his Kyubi power by just getting angry, where to turn into a Super Saiyan you have to go through intense training and extreme emotions, the first time and it isn't easy the rest of the time unless you train with it. Naruto is also a lot more predictible than Dragon Ball, as predictible as DBZ.
If the manga caught up to the anime like it did with DBZ early on then it would be just like DBZ with the prolonged fights, repetitive animation. Otherwise Naruto is still similar to DBZ in lots of other ways. </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'>
did you read the manga? did they cut out the part in the anime where freiza and king cold comes to earth to first kill goku then blow it up? yes dragonballz is the same thing over and over again. one major villian. goku has to become strong to beat him bla bla bla. the same over and over again. and yes goku dies. when fighting raditz he sacrifces his own life to kill him and comes back right to the fight with nappa and vegeta. and then he dies against cell and doesnt come back for 7 years..... he dies twice in dragonballz.

point is, at the moment Goku bacame ssj I -> III , you knew he wouldt lose anymore(meaning that he would eventually be victor), this was especially the case in the first 4 saga.
THAT's the clue . Naruto could still get his ass beat, because it has a far deeper story line.

Well, since Dragonball Z was possibly one of the first 5 anime I ever watched, I can honestly say it's what made me the smelly otaku that I am today. I don't think it was because of the repetitive plot or kick-ass fighting (since most of every episode was standing or flying), but the character-loveability.
I see alot of that in Naruto. Sure there's plenty of face-offs, but I don't think they last as long as the ones in DBZ. Naruto's inactivity generally centers around deeper-explanations of skills and histories only alluded to in prior episodes. Plus the plot is not repetitive in the least. There is plenty of fighting, but each little saga is an entirely different creature, ever evolving into some new goal, aim, or subplot. There is a lot of minor character personality development that leads for great future openings into the story.
In closing, there are some similarities to DBZ. The face-offs and seemingly small amount of activity per episode. There are alot of differences. Evolving storyplot, minor character development, deeper explanations, humor, and a more down-to-earth conflict.
I think the differences far outweigh the similarities.

YOOOOO! Its me again. OK. Hero-Sennin ere wasa massive fan of DBZ, and knew so much about it, it was actually quite sad. Some of the ppl in here talking about the similarities/differences just... Shhhh...... quiet. OK. Theres one guy who was saying something about how Naruto Nine tails isnt similar to SSJ because Naruto had a hard time against Neji still. Well...did you make that one up all by yourself? arent you clever? Shhh...... Goku vs Frieza is where we got SSJ for the first time (Unless you count the weird version of SSJ we see in Goku vs Slug) and lets face it, he won by the skin of his teeth really. He almost died once as a SSJ, but then sorta 'rose from the dead' but BAH! my point is, the Red Chakra and SSJ are actually quite similar concepts. And sorta echoing some guy who sounded like he wanted to be writing magazines (..been waiting for a series like this...and its finally here!--- http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/dry.gif ) It sells, or rather it 'appeals' to the same sorta people. If ur into fighting anime then, your likely to enjoy the idea of someone mortal being fuckin super hard, man. The way things are dragged out, fair enough. That is very similar, especially with this later saga (exam), at which point I want to agree with the dude/dudette who said the first series had practically no dragging out and was wicked (a bit like DB) and the later ones with the exams are getting a bit Z like in the way that they're being dragged out. Its true, its not opinion, those resemblences are there, but I dont think its like watching DBZ. (although RekkaShinobi man, ur character analogy is quite good. Sasuke Vegeta Naruto Kakkarott, and you had me fall of my chair laughing when u called Oorichimaru Michael Jackson so casually.*sigh* classic.) but yeah man, Its not the same. Someone else said the fights differ more emphasis on strategy, more explanation of character history and personal goals etc in naruto, more depth, and you're all probably right, but I aint havin no mo-fuckin-fos dissin my homie toryiama for his plotlines. They all had meaning, there was the travelling in time, and dealing with fucking impossibly hard bad guys, and oh....THe RIVALRY! man that was cool...which is a bit similar to Naruto/sasuke, but when u think about it, It was a major theme in DBZ but not in Naruto. I'd say Naruto looks more like HunterXHunter than Dragon ball Z. Sure, Naruto and DBZ have fighting and tournaments in common, but Naruto and HXH have about everything in common.
In both animes, There's a serie of multiple tests that the main characters must pass. Some require teamwork, some fighting skills, and some cunning thinking. In HXH, the tests are (forgive me if I've forgotten any) Endurance test, Cooking test, The huge tower test, the test on the island, Survival test and finally the tournament. In Naruto, there's the written test, forest of death, and then the tournament.
In both animes, you get to know more about all the characters as the anime proceeds instead of focusing just on the main character. Also, in both animes, there is'nt a tournament winner declared (although I'm not sure if the tournament in Naruto will continue or not)
In both animes, every characters have their own unique powers. Hosaki in HXH reminds me of Gaara, with his thirst for blood and his "evil" attitude. Kilua reminds me of Sasuke, both with "cold" attitudes (dark assassin & dark avenger, pretty similiar) and the main character with the black hair (geez, I cant beleive I forgot his name! memory blank...) looks a lot like Naruto, often clueless but very very cunning. And of course, they're both stubborn and will never surrender or give up.
Also, each fights are unique, and you can never predict what's going to happen and who will emerge victorious.
So in all, I believe Naruto looks more like HunterXHunter than Dragonball Z.

I should say damn Naruto fanboys and fangirls. I like Dragon Ball Z and I watched it for years but I think Naruto is better. But I don't think Naruto can even compare to Dragon Ball. It's a lot more original, better fight scenes, and better everything except animation. Naruto is to Goku as Sasuke is to Vegeta, there's so many similarities in the rivalries.

To be honest I don't think there has ever been a more powerful bunch of characters than the Saiyans and the baddies in DBZ..... O often wondered what it would be like if there was a cross over from DBZ and another anime....
Goku would pwn Kyuubi...... heck almost all the saiyans could proably own Kyuubi except chibi Goten and Chibi Trunks.
Edit: As for the character comparison, I think Vegeta did the whole 'I'm an arrogant powerful fighter' thing a whole lot better than Sasuke. Note for the ittle people here who seem to think you can only like one anime I'm not saying Sasuke isn't a good character.
But guys seriously there are going to be overlaps between anime's since there are only so many things that people can think of to make the characters look powerful.... if they have an aura around them it doesn't mean that they are DBZ or something... if they have a Samurai sword they arn't trying to be Kenshin... if they are late for uni and are typing this it doesn't mean they are a copy of me..... http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/blink.gif

foreals ppl takes this thing so seriously..i mean geez, both were and are great animes. Just because it has similarities and you like naruto more than db/dbz doesnt mean it makes it bad..besides dubbed(english, spanish, french etc etc.) and censored db/dbz is what killed it IMO.

DBZ/GT saga's were great. No doubt. But after a while of watching it. It gets boring. DBZ set the level of where anime should be.
As time pasts interests past. We all happend to run into naruto, and we got hooked. Who knows maybe we would all like to watch cardcaptors or pokemon agian.
