this episode was a definite filler episode. what made it unbearable to watch for me was the sub-par animation.
personally, i was happy to see the entrance of susake and kakashi, there was a strong build to it and the renewal of the naruto/sasuke friendship/rivalry was intense. too bad the animation didn't do it any justice.
the way i see it, filler episodes OR episodes with poor animation just make the characters carry more substance and give a better animators more recognition. with this episode falling in both categories, i can't wait for the next ep......and there are 2 to boot!!!

no one seems to have said anyhitng about sasuke's speed yet....in the preview we see him moving as a blur and dodging gaara's sand shield completely. could he possibly be as fast as lee now? he does have weights on his hands (well they look like weights atleast)

Yup, this episode was maybe a bit boring as it was all waiting for Sasuke and Kakashi to arrive. But on the other hand I'm happy that now the animators don't have to spread the fight between Sasuke and Gaara into two or more episodes. If the fight started in this episode, it wouldn't have ended until the next episode. And in my opinion it's funnier to watch the whole fight at once.

As been stated, the animation could have been a lot better in a lot of places. Aside from that, it just seemed like a pointless episode. The least they could have done was have a "teaser" ending, where they do a few moves to kind of get started, then wait til next episode to get to the real fighting. That atleast I could tolerate..

I liked 65....shikamaru is SO cool....Lee and Gai's reaction to Neji's loss was sweet.

65 was boring, 15 minutes for Sasuke to arive at the arena, I mean how many times do they have to say over and over and over, switching from head to head asking where is he, when is he going to get here. should we disqualify him no 10 more minutes no maybe 15 we get the fucking point Sasuke was late, then more of the boring ass Garaa shit, with him making his wierd sounds like he needs to take a shit real bad and then going off and killing more people. ok. There is one thing i have to say to this.
Out of all the Naruto episodes, none of them can be classed as a simple filler due to the fact that they give you background info and storyline. Episode 65, is the first episode i can seriously call. A FILLER.
I'm not a half fan as you say, it's just.... Think about what happened in the episode. Was there any background information at all? No. Was there any talk amongst the characters of any plans or of anything regarding the future? No. Was there any talk regarding the situation and the characters thoughts on it at all? Yes, with Rock Lee for about 2 and a half minutes.
This had no storyline in it at all. This had no background info at all. Even the animation was bad, like it was rushed. Seriously man, this is a true filler if ever there was one.

not true...this episode was more than a filler...
well it served many purposes being:
1. intro to sasuke in the arena
2. rock lee and is emotions and thoughts
3. gaara losing control of himself (killing the 2 grass ninjas)
4. aftermath of shikamaru's loss more in depth
besides...you cant say this episode was worthless when the moment in the storyline is a bit tedious...

the intro to the sasuke into the arena could of been done at the beginning of the episode and had the match then and there.
I did mentioned that they stated about Rock Lee's feelings on the matter, but it lasted barely 3 minutes.
They've already demostrated how Gaara loses control sometimes before in earlier episodes. They could of done that in the same episode as the fight, it's just they made it soooo drawn out in order to fill more time. For instance, Shika states about Gaara killing without hesitation, yet Gaara took aaaaages to simply take the cork out of the gourd. It was obvious they were trying to fill as much time as possible with every scene so they could roll the fights into the 1hr special.
As for the aftermath of Shikamaru's defeat, well i guess that's true. But they did extend even that scene a lot longer than i feel was needed.
I'm not saying this moment in the storyline is tedious. To say it's tedious is to have a repeat of something i didn't like. So far i haven't minded any of the Naruto episodes, except this one. This is the first i've really had anything against.
The Sasuke and Gaara match was obvious to the plan the first time the guy said to delay the match. Having him say it a second time, and the 4th hokage agree a second time, just gave me total deja vu all over.

Considering that all the story elements needed in this episode would've taken atleast half the episode, I'm glad they stretched it out and didnt start the fight
why? Cause I dont want Woohoo animation studios (Korean based) to animaite it. I want (as we all do) want nara animation studios to do it...
You might be annoyed that this ep was "filler" but lots of the story elements are in place in the manga and defiently wont have the same feeling if they are rushed... at most they could've saved 10 minutes but then what? A start of a crappy drawn fight like ep 45? no thank you.

The consept of diffent Groups doing the same show just seems odd to me. why not stick with the Golden team and screw all eles. heck i wount mind if naruto aired every other week as long as all the eps were Golden

i think that the naruto follows a common trend in a few japanse storylines. u show the fans a little something and then go all out in the main event. they sometimes throw in a swerve to continue the story or fool the fans.... and that is what im looking forward to. its just a way to hook in the fans to hopefully continue watching and want more. as to why they use crappy animators, who knows (perhaps nara studios are really expensive animators and their quality needs more time, so they sacrafice quality and use cheap animators to keep up with a weekly release them for us fans).
so call episode 65 the calm before the storm. its still a filler not only in story, but for the animators too.
you can see this stuff in a similar light to that of DBZ and japan/WWE wrestling. there should always be a bulid up before a key fight, its just good storytelling, if it wasn't there, i probably not enjoy the show as much as i do.

well you cant really make such an assumption off just the anime.....since the one that has previously been referenced so far (excluding the previews), was the raikiri (translated into lightning edge). It's relation to chidori hasnt been explained yet

Nessacarly it didn't have to take nearly 30 minutes to decide the fate of Sasuke (disqualifyed or not). Then the unessacary talking, then the flashy leaf arival. BLAH THEY COULDA cramed that in like 10 minutes. But you know how TV anime works. Stall time and let the veiwer keep having to tune in to find out whats next.
O well hope that one hour special or what ever is gonnna be cool.

I agree that the episode sucked but I don't see how the episode was a filler. Most everything that happened occurs in the manga. Besides wouldn't you rather have the one hour episode be the whole fight instead of starting it in ep 65 and finishing it in 66.

If you watch the anime from start to finish, you don't care about the filler episodes because then you can watch the next one. That's what I'm like right now with One Piece. IF it seems like a filler episode, i dont' care because I have the next one! Anyway, it wasn't much of a filler episode because all of it was in the manga. You can't have awesome episodes all the time. Anyway, after this episode, I'm looking forward to...say...the next 10-15 episodes of really good stuff.

the stuff they put in the episode was stuff that needed to be shown.....they stretched out the waiting for sasuke a little more than they did in the manga because this way thay can keep all the fighting within an hour long special. It makes perfect sense! And as for animation.....we've gone over that before, the less talented studios are always given the less significant episodes, since somebody's gotta make them, and better to reserve the high quality stuff for the good scenes.
NICE job with the new subtitles.....if Anbu/Aone were to go and change their previous releases using those subs......then i'd finally be able to have eps 49-64 consistent with a single fansub group! (As of right now ive been forced to judge between readability and grammar every week)

Yeah i totally agree. If you think about what actually happened, the whole episode was a total waste of time. Nothing happened! A load of talking, a load of silence, and that's all. They don't even talk about anything which is important to the storyline. Or even talk about a persons background or anything. Total waste of time.
Oh and i have to agree about the animation. It's like they changed the artist or something. For instance, Naruto's head in the end sequence is way too high, and Sakura's face when Sasuke finally appears is as dumb as hell, and Sasuke's face looks like a fan drew it rather than the proper artist.
The animation had better improve or it's going to completely ruin it all for me. Also i hope they don't waste anymore time like that, i can't believe i had to wait 2 weeks for that http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/dry.gif

All of the anime that came out right after the break I think sucked in terms of animation. I think it's because all the japanese animators were off on vacation and the episodes went to some lowest bidder outside contractor.

In the manga, they made a symbollic comparison between him holding the bar of that crutch and him holding the bars of a closed gate that showed sasuke and naruto on the other side, in a place where he isnt good enough to enter. It seemed more emotionally powerful than the way they did it in the anime

i dunno, the way they did it in the anime was pretty damned sad, but that damned Sadness song almost brings me to tears anyways so it musta been that, i dont think its a good idea to sorta indicate that hes not good enough to enter that area, maybe thats why they changed it, because Rock would've beaten any other genin there than gaara, i mean against neji, it may be a good battle, maybe neji would win, who knows, but at the point before he fought gaara he coulda beaten anyone but gaara himself, so to indicate he's not good enough probably wasnt the idea they wanted to get across, it was just that he was taking the loss and injury hard and that he felt he failed his way of the ninja, thats just my opinion anyways
i personally didnt find the animation too repulsive, i find that in most eps that people complain a whole lot about the animation, i dont seem to care/notice, in this case i did notice but i didnt really notice enough to care, gaaras head being a LIL balloony doesnt really change the episode itself, the problem with that episode to me wasnt the animation it was the teasing, they took forever and it was really slow, i didnt like the animation as much as i liked other eps. but again i didnt care, there was no action to show off so who cares if gaaras head is balloony as they show him walking down some steps, boohoo, if its balloony next week when they fight, then its time to form an angry mob, but for now just be glad it wasnt like the kiba fight, that was like scooby doo animation and at a cool ass fight too

I think we can be sure about some things:
1. the Animation was really bad [gaara looked fat indeed, as he walks down the stairs ;D]
2. The incoming from Sasuke was too long [ I found it some way to prolly]
and some things I myself found bad: Sasukes new look, and his Pseudiciil reactions as in the begin of the series, in some why it pissed me off in this ep.
and the Preview of the next eps was spoiling hrm...I didn't want to know yet, that Sasuke has Chidori....

Chidori? wth is that? I did watch the preview, but man! did you have to say it? I didn't even hear of that until now, and a lot of people here probably didn't watch the preview due to the kind warning someone gave earlier. Jeez man.... be more careful.

I liked the episode, the killing by Gaara is great. Only thing thay I really hate is the HORRIBLE way the characters were drawn. Do this a few more times and no one likes Naruto anymore.

I would have preferred that they shortened everything into 10 minutes of that episode, but not started the fight. Instead they should have just ended the episode right there after 10 minutes and not wasted my damn time...

This episode wasnt that bad, there are far more anime with these kind of fillers, but in Naruto you atleast dont get any reruns of scenes u already saw a thousand times.
(the gaara head was very evil though)

i actually didnt notice the bad animation much, i thought with gaaras head they were trying to show u it through a convex/concave lense.. i forget the name...
however the episode had no point except for a thing we call "suspense"
its this amazing concept that if you make someone more eager for something that theyll probably enjoy it 100x more if its any good
personally i can wait for a few eps for something to happen, as long as its good
and btw about 65, i think sasukes waaay too overconfident...
he hasent even seen gaara fight yet.

Yeah perhaps it does happen in the manga. But did those few scenes take 25 minutes to read? I highly doubt it, it only took the anime 25 minutes because they were stretched out so long on purpose, when they could of fitted all of it in like 10mins.
Igma, the idea of the forum and this specific area of the forum, is to discuss what we think of Naruto. This is not a pointless topic, because we are talking about what we think of Naruto Episode 65. Also all the other topics are done by the community for their own reasons, and I doubt everyone in this forum is going to suddenly stop posting suddenly, simply so you can keep track of your own posts. If you want to keep track of your own posts so much, visit more often.
Ok, i will stop arguing about how pointless i considered this episode seeing as some of you seem to think this episode was a very important point in the Naruto series. However, i stand firm on the fact that most of it was unnecessarily drawn out, and it should of been squashed down to 10 minutes. Also the animation was terrible, i stick by that one too =P

the reason the "bad" animators made ep 65 was because the good ones were busy in making the 2 eps in one special which takes like 2 weeks to finish so therefore they sat some not so good animators on the boring ep..

they messed up some things in my opinion bcuz in the manga it was great and therefore i was verry dissapointed with this episode
- sasuke/kakashi's arrival just seems lame...
- when naruto says yhe i won the first match .. kakashi smiles 4 a second doesnt happen... WICH IS VERRY VERRY IMPORTANT !!
- the joke of being late just seemed stupid in that episode...
- and they just messed it up with lee and gai entering the stadium .. in the manga you really thought AH FINALLY SASUKE AND KAKASHI but in the ep they just spoiled it with lee's stick.
- the scene with lee being all down seemed stupid compared to the manga
these points i was really really looking forward to and it seems they just messed it all up... could have been a great episode but it didnt :/

i agree about that, however if you notice in teh trailor for the next episode you do see kakashi do that. when naruto and shikamaru are in the crowd you see kakashi look up at him like you described, so they did add that in.. but in a different spot.

I think this episode was ok but i want to get to the action already. Sasuke's voice was like he jus went through puberty in the training, i wish he had is regular voice, it just sounds better.
And Guizmo0, do you remember the part when the feudal lords were like, there was a rumor about the uchiha kid being badly injured, maybe they showed it to make you think for 2 seconds Sasuke injured is leg or something.

you all seem to be waiting for certain " moments" in the anime to make it cool for you.
Instead I follow the red line and have to say that the only disturbing thing was the animation.
It might not have been a GREAT episode, it certainly didnt suck.
I think you should look more carefully to the thing that are shown in the non-action episodes. Often it shows things you will suddenly later on realise to be very important.

When they create anime, they do it with the intention of having it licensed and sold on DVD format through retailers. Sometimes they have to release it to the TV though, before another company with the power to license such things, will draw their attention on their particular anime. Also showing it on TV is a good way to draw fans to buying the DVDs.
So basically, every bad drawing they make in the anime, will eventually end up in a DVD which we will be paying for. It's only thanks to the fansubs, that people outside of Japan get to see the free versions of the anime, because the companies don't like it going outside of Japan until they have applied it to DVD format and start making real money out of it.
So the quality you see will not be free for us. If it wasn't for the Fansubbers, you would have to PAY for that.
