I think it's for the right reasons (assuming this isn't a troll).
Viewers in Japan only need to turn on their TV to watch; for the most part Naruto doesn't cost them any more than what they're already spending to watch TV. However outside that broadcast zone the rest of us, to legally watch it, have to wait (4 years!) for an uncut version to watch that costs (in comparison to domestic shows) a lot of money.
Now that Viz wants to make it a similar experience for the English-speaking world, one where you can watch for free (wait a week), or if you wish for an archive buy the DVDs, the niché that DB was filling really isn't necessary.
In one way it's sad, no more HD, but still the company is making a real effort for its viewers and I applaud that.
Well, at least we have another month and a half to keep watching Naruto before they drop it. Makes a lot of people sad when they have to drop it, but their reasoning seems legitimate.
But their will be other subbers right?...
I won't mind if everything was in a sub or srt file. Just downloading the raw and using vobsub. It's quicker that way

What puts this press release apart from all their other "serious" ones is its sincerity. They're not acting all tough and straight-faced about why they're dropping it because of some spam mail. They're talking about dropping it on a matter of principle. By reviewing why they're subbing Naruto, they're justifying why they should stop. For that, I believe it's going to happen. Even if they don't, I believe they should, after saying all that. (bring on the neg reps)
While I'll definitely miss the archival releases, as people have said, there's bound to be a way. Being the monopoly of Naruto fansubs, it's only right that they step down the way they did.
What sells me that this is real and not a troll is that AnimeNewsNetwork has it posted and its so far out.

DB has done many trolls in the past but as far as I recall they have always been done in places people should know they are trolls. Either during the week where Naruto won't air due to a double episode or when they know a release will be very late and people are harassing them. I can think of no president where they trolled a month and a half in advance and doing a search on ANN I see none of DB's previous trolls ever announced as news. Feel free to correct me if you know of anything to disprove either of those points.
P.S. Its idiotic to neg rep people saying things like this is a troll or if you do it to Buffalobiian for his post before this one. If you think its a troll feel free to post why you think so instead of adding nothing to the discussion and voting with cowardly neg reps like so many feel the urge to do around here.
i believe it. and even if it's not true, it should be. like it says in the announcement, with viz releasing subs of naruto for free a week after they air, there's no precedent for DB to continue. viz's decisions have impressed me time and time again, and i'm sure they'll put a lot of effort into their releases. i'm usually fairly disgruntled when sub groups drop shows because of the licensing company, but this time, if it's true, i respect DB's decision.

It makes sense. They have been getting angry that other idiots have been putting DB's subs on streaming sites and YT. After a year of making threats they're going to stop subbing, has finally happened. I am just surprised they didnt do it 6 months ago.
Let some idiot put Naruto on a streaming site, or let the actual company that owns Naruto put it on a streaming site where it costs money was the only choices DB has. I see it as they're doing it out of love.
They kill 2 birds with one stone. People who stream DB's subs, can't anymore and the company that owns Naruto stands to make a profit. I suspect Naruto popularity will decline now. That's the price it pays for stupid idiots on the internet.

Troll, indeed. DB is trying to send a message to Viz that they should be releasing Naruto episodes like this. In typing it like a farewell letter to Naruto months in advance, they generate a ton of attention. Finally got around to reading that press release, and I have to say that if it's a troll, it's surely somewhat different from the previous ones. They were basically kind of full of bs, even if they seemingly had some "reason" behind them, if you invested one full minute into thinking about it. This looks pretty different, especially if you assume it also was real history and those numbers and other facts are correct in it.
All the glorious intentions and reasons aside, it won't mean anything to me as long as the streams are blocked from others than denizens of the North America. Not to mention it would suck not to be able to archive. Still, it's of course up to DB and noone else to decide what they want to do.
Only time will tell whether this was nothing but the most masterful of their hoaxes or a real thing.

To be bad, it was a nice little story. I remember the AH days when they were totally shit and still were in the early days of DB. Now they were good. I would say they still didn't top TW, but I think they came on par with ANBU-AONE.
I hope they pick up One Piece, Kaizoku are good but damn slow and the others are not archive material. DB would be good for this I think.

I must say, the video quality is awesome. The same quality you'll get if a good subgroup was subbing it. Since Dattebayo is a speedsub, the videoquality isn't all that good IMO. But, since there is no alternative, I'm happy that they are doing it.
I'm sure there are ppl that will rip it for us and save us $5 a month.

Wow. I went and watched one, after I saw your post. The eps are in Japanese with English subs, but have American commercials. I thought that was weird.
that's actually coming up for me too, ryouga. apparently because the videos are uploaded to and linked from hulu, it only works in the u.s. the crunchyroll ones starting on the 8th are supposed to be worldwide
But Crunchyroll requires you to pay. While the 'free' sites seem to be region locked.

Taka's release of 89 looks pretty good. Image quality isn't fuzzed down like DB, and the translation is acceptable. They're taking feedback on this forum, the main man being Masked Avenger.
Well im kinda sad that DB wont be subbin naruto anymore. I can remeber when they 1st started and everyone was stuck on AONE and dissed DB but then aone dropped it or started to slow down and every1 to DB. I must say in my eyes they have created a level of subbing with speed and quailty that most subbers try to follow now. I have always like how DB showed respect and also showed they like to joke around with the general public the way they did. Neither can I, all I can remember is jokes at the public's expense and using their clout with the narutard nation to gain lulz. I suppose cramming H.264 into an AVI container or waiting as long as they did to move to H.264 in the first place could be considered 'respecting the public' but that depends a lot on what public you're talking about.
usp686 if you seriously think DB pioneered anything or sets any sort of trend I can only assume you're either blind or don't watch follow much anime other than Naruto and maybe Bleach. All DB really has going for it is speed, and they were not the first fast group and they won't be the last fast group. What's more, many better (as in quality) groups have demonstrated that speed of release from time of airing is less meaningful than consistency of release schedule. Does anyone really care what day the raw of a show is available? When a group has a monopoly on a series all that really matters is getting at least one episode out every 7 days or less consistently.

I've never paid for anything, so I don't know about credit card info. I watched Druaga with them, and their quality is acceptable for a stream. They skimp on bandwidth whenever they can, so the OP and ED usually look atrocious. The body's find though.
As much as I'd like to support the anime industry and Vid's move, I'm moving onto Taka after the next episode.
I'll be switching to Taka, and with me a lot of people. Still not ready to pay for a good quality anime. If I pay, I expect hard evidence I purchased it, in the form of a dvd. Since this is not the case, too bad.
Maybe in the future (when I'm in Hong Kong) I might buy it. Only Japanese audio and English subs of course ;)
