What is exactly a host club? Do they strive to excel in hosting parties, or things like that?

Hmm... Since Lunar dropped Bleach, I wonder if this is to be their new big thing, or is this just a smaller project. Or perhaps it's just an erroneous idea of mine that there should be always a mega series being subbed... Well, anyway, I'll wait a little to see the reactions here before deciding whether to try this one or not.

If you look over their previous works, Lunar really doesn't do that many "mega series." Their most popular projects were Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Bleach and Suzuka, and Suzuka's popularity was most likely tied into the number of people that were watching Bleach and tried it out. To me, Lunar has always been a group that has picked up series that other groups do not (at least initially). That trend has fallen somewhat. Other groups that pick up these series usually seem to because Lunar was forced to drop it, or fell very far behind on the subbing.

Anyhow, a "host club" comes off related to a section of the "water trade" typically. This comprises of the people in Japan that essentially shmooze customers for money using sexual means. ("water trade" also includes Fuuzoku establishments, I'm not explaining that one in a forum) At a hostess club, one would be seated between to women who would rub against you constantly. Not lap dances, but grabbing your arm tightly between their breasts, etc. They giggle and keep the customer happy and drunk the whole time. A "host club" is the male version of this for women. (There are also transvestite clubs for homosexuals, fair is fair). There is nothing overtly sexual about these clubs, they serve a similar function to what geisha's do today in Kyoto.

It's got Maaya Sakamoto as the main character. I'd watch it no matter what.

The first eps was pretty funny though. I'll probably stick with this for a while. They're so over the top about the bishonen scenes that you can't help but laugh at them. The great "monetary divide" references and insults Haruhi gets all the time a funny too.

Watched the first episode, it wasn't too bad... The bishounen side puts me off, so I don't know if' I'll continue watching it...

Saw both eps today. After watching the first I told myself there's no way in hell I'll be watching this series. However the second episode sort of redeemed the series in my perspective. There is some actual outcome to this whole Hosting thing other than them looking like rich morons and sitting around listening to the girls squeal the whole time.

I'll check out the next ep, and if its not satisfactory, then this series is gone. I agree though all the bishounen crap is what almost turned me away completely, that and the ambiguous homosexuality between the two twins... Don't have a clue what that's all about, but its all got it's own little humor to it, I guess... I can't say that this series looks very promising though.

Saw the second episode... this isn't so bad. I'll keep watching it, but only when I don't have anything else to watch. I wish they would kill the twin brothers though. The lesbianism at the end made up for the rest of the episode.

i think this series isn't bad so far. but then again, lots of series start out decent and burn.

as for the twins, i don't mind, but it's unexpected i suppose. that and i also assume all the people who posted above anti-twins were probably guys :p

a bit off topic, but this series sort of reminds me of a drama i watched (meteor garden) just b/c there's this school of rich, snobby kids who don't all turn out to be snobby, and the sole poor kid who gets in with them.

This seems pretty funny thus far. Whilst much of the first episode presented humour from a bit too easy and obvious category: emphasizing differences between poor and rich, not even all of that was bad as such. The second episode was a bit different due to the revelation at the end of the first, and in my opinion was made better because of that.

Well, the graphics are good and technical aspects nice also otherwise. If this level of quality is maintained, I'll probably keep watching this.

Yes, indeed. It was a great episode. A really great master plan to hide Haruhi's gender... Somehow this show manages to be slightly surprising and certainly entertaining even if the plot actually isn't that deep.

And I'm always happy to have a good Lunar subbed series to dl. Along with AonE it's my oldest acquaintance in the world of subbing.

I really like this show now, another Gotwoot scouted hit for me, I think i'm just going to let the forum tell me what to watch from now on. The goofiness of these charachters knows no bounds, but yet it manages to make sense somehow. Let's hope this don't over run the parent manga and become another Black Cat.

Ouran HS Host Club Ep 4 - Lunar

Pretty good episode, although I feel like the humor might be getting stale, it's still funny. The girl turning them all into Love RPG charachters was worth a laugh, and as usual Tamaki was hilarious with his mood swings. I hope they do something with Takashi sometime though, he's so mysterious because he rarely speaks other than to help Honey-kun.

This is a seriously funny series. Some of the scenes are like overdramatic theatre, some totally out of this world, and then Haruhi concludes it by muttering: "Damn rich bastards..."

Yeah, it's one helluva club they are running.

Episode 5 - Lunar

What's the name of the ED song? Its been growing on me.

Great episode. Gotta love thier neurotic behavior.

Aye, neurotic indeed. This episode had actually quite a nice plot. Even if it was simple and didn't seem to have too much content, it actually worked really well. It's also nice how Haruhi actually is a bit similar to Kyon in The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi; both are in an environment that isn't quite what they are used to or where they actually belong, and thus can make observant comments, as if they were outsiders.

But poor Haruhi got owned in this episode. Badly.

I loved the completely random entrance of the French girl with her utter uselessness and all. For some reason I didn't see the fight being fake coming, which I count as a good thing, predictability being bad and all. It's not all that interesting that Haruhi is affecting the twins so much though, since she's probobly the only person in the school with actual character.

And the Haruhi 'shop' was priceless. Thus i've saved it for posterity!

Ouran Host Club 6 by Solar

They've been releasing this series for a while but I've always grabbed Lunar since it came out essentitally at the same time, guess I'll find out if this group is worth anything.

PS: Does anyone even watch this besides Kraco and I?

I watch this series, but mainly keep my comments on it to the Lunar Forums. It's a good series, but I've been looking forward to some of the future eps because I read three and a half volumes of the manga.

i watch this show as well. this week's episode confirmed a very important matter for me. the anime isn't nearly as much fun if you've already read the manga :S

Episode 6 - Lunar

Another fine episode. Perhaps in a certain sense more serious than some of the earlier episodes, but the plot was strong. It can't be really said this series has had, or will probably ever have, that deep plots, but honestly a deep plot might ruin this whole show, which is so much based on superficiality.

But one thing that caught my attention, and that I wanted to verify, is the relation between he and she Haruhis. With a couple of screenshots that was easy, and I was satisfied with the result: There isn't any huge transformation at all.

Episode 7 - Lunar

Here's a trivia about this series: the intro song's instrumental is taken (or borrowed or whatever) from Avril Lavigne's "Skater Boy" song. I didn't realize at all until I read about it in ANN and immediately recognized it when I saw the opening.

A mixed episode. Considering the ending it had surprising amount of hard action; not really something I would have associated with this series. Some other good things were development of characters, which continued very nicely in this episode. There was also some more funny Kyon style cynicism by Haruhi.

Well, other than those interesting parts the rather inconsequential or uninteresting thing about this episode was the fact it was a swimsuit episode. With the exception of Haruhi. So, we only got lots of dudes in trunks. Not really something I'm especially looking for, although it did result in some good moments with Haruhi being there with them, even if she was wearing more clothes. However, it looks like this will be corrected in the next ep, which hopefully is the real obligatory beach episode.

Edit: Mori-senpai is a big man. Haruhi is a delicate girl.

I disliked this material in the manga, and the same feeling with this eps. As far as I'm concerned, the best part of the eps was Renge's cosplay as Quon from RahXephon. (BONES also did RahXephon, and Maaya Sakamoto [Haruhi] was featured in it as well.) The tattoo was dead on, as expected from an Renge's incredible otaku-ness, bolstered by the same animation staff, and the umbrella was a great touch too.

oh mori and honey ^_^ another good episode, i liked how they finally got into the reason why honey and mori were always together. that and finding out what the two family backgrounds were was interesting as well. i predict that as episodes continue, they'll divulge in the family backgrounds of the other characters. i really liked the part where mori calls haruhi by her name.

[Lunar] Ouran Ep 8

A Great Ep, Haruhi bondage, in more ways than one..you won't understand until you watch it.

It was a fine episode, indeed. While much of this series is based on Haruhi playing the role of a boy, the show works also extremely well during those times she's actually in a girl's role (as much as she can, with her lack of girlyness).

But we still didn't actually see her in a swimsuit. Strange.

Lunar - Ouran Ep 9

another good ep, but this ep felt a bit different from the others. i mean sure, the content was different, the host club actively tried to keep haruhi which publicly showed how much of an impact she's made, but i dunno, the mood wasn't the same or something. anyone else notice? some really funny parts in this ep though.

Yeah, it was certainly a bit different. But perhaps it was just caused by those weird ladies from the other school. As side characters they certainly got lots of time on screen. The actual host club was pushed to the background, with Haruhi and the weird ladies in the center. And one thing altering the mood was probably the fact there wasn't anything that funny about those three appearances. They were just quite hostile characters, not comenic at all, except for the transvestite (or whatever the leader of that trio was), but even that character grew old quickly.

This is turning out to be a good friday with all the anime releases:

Episode 10 - Lunar

Heh. It was a superb episode once again. The biggest thing of course being that we got to see Haruhi's residence. And her dad, which for sure surprised me quite profoundly. But on the other hand, in retrospect, it does explain great many things. Otherwise the visit was pretty much what you could have expected; and that was very good as such.

This is a great series. Good pick for Lunar.

agreed, another great episode. you can see how everyone is gradually changing because of her. even in small things like mori giving haruhi his strawberries. can anyone explain the whole growing mushrooms thing though? is that supposed to be a pun or something?

A fabulous episode, we got to see more of Haruhi's background :) My only complaint about this episode was that it was very fast-paced.

Now that Haruhi's background is sorted out, we go back to business:

Episode 11 - Lunar

A decent episode, yet not really one of the top ones. It felt a bit distant as it mainly concentrated on secondary or unknown characters. While the black magic occult dude had appeared before, it's not like he's in the main cast of the show (even if he's voice acted by Ueda Yuji), nor even the girl manager of the club (whatever was her name, who always rises with high power motor pedestal).

So, unlike the best episodes, this didn't really reveal anything about the host club characters, nor develop them or their relationships.

not really much to stay about this episode b/c it wasn't really about the host club at all. but it was kinda interesting to learn about the weird cat worshipper guy and that he's not just a random ass guy w/ that funny looking cat puppet (which looks strangely like chiyo's dad in azumanga daioh). hmm although this might be too deep of an interpretation for such a light anime, after some thought, this ep w/ the cat guy might serve to further show that there is more than meets the eye. how he isn't what he seems like at all, and that it's really only due to circumstances that he dresses/looks/acts the way he does.

Episode 12 - Lunar

Quite a nice, and traditional, Ouran episode. Not really any extra characters but just the host club this time. I can't really say this would have developed the characters that much, but that's ok once in a while.

And no bunny-Haruhi after all. She's certainly spared of any fan service, quite totally.

Sigh... that was such a tease.

It was a great episode -- I laughed at the different guilt-ridden techniques Honey tried to use.

At first I didn't think this would be a anime I could get into but after a few episodes it started to grow on me. I felt for Honey with that whole ice-cream to tooth happened. I can remember when I had a bad tooth and the pain I felt when anything cold hit it.

i felt bad for tamaki's bear haha. and i liked the part when everyone was scared of honey but mori said the bunny wanted tea and then everything was all good

I wonder how big Haruhi's debt is right now...

Episode 13 - Lunar

A psychedelic episode. I'm not usually the greatest fan of this type of episodes. I didn't find this even particularly funny.

interesting way of a reshowing old faces :-)

I'm a sucker for Freudian dream plots so it was interesting. For a 20 minute show, they did a great job in pacing.

It was werid and unusual, somewhat fun and interesting, but I don't think I like it too much.

hmm i must agree with the lot of you, i didn't really like this episode. i actually didn't recognize some of the people in it, but maybe that's cuz so many of the girls look alike. who was the cleaning lady?

I believe her name was Ayanokoji (sp?), the jealous chick that got kicked out in the first episode....at least I think that's her.

Ouran - 14

A good episode. Puppy dog eyes and commoner jokes. :)

Haruhi's expression at the end was unexpected, made it 10x funny for me. (Maybe I'm a little thick headed and expected something different)

Lol I was just about to go to bed and I thought, i'll drop by Lunar's IRC to grab their CRS...what luck that I would find this link so fresh it's not even on their front page at the time of this posting!

this ep was probably one of the better ones, espcially with the recent string of so-so episodes. you can see how the twins are starting to split apart and overall this was a hilarious ep. mori sure reminded me of the brawny man when he was chopping wood. :D

A fine episode. Not terribly humorous this time. It's kind of interesting how they switch between humorous themes and deeper themes with little trouble. Since I'm not any obligatory fan of comedy, I have no problems with this. And it's nice to see the Hikaru-Kaoru relationship can be used in a broader way than just as a source of the regular jokes and hosting scenes.

The differences between Hikaru and Kaoru this ep were the most obvious I've noticed so far. And Hikaru's growth as a person was very nicely presented. Hopefully more charachters will end up evolving in some way as well.

Great episode.
Btw, I swear that little bean bag thing Hikaru was holding was a reference to FMA...

Episode 17 - Lunar

A pretty good episode. Not terribly much action or humor, but plenty of other things like character development (certain kind of) and character backgrounds. And of course quite a few nice scenes. And Haruhi in a girl mode, which is always nice.

I thought this was a really good episode, Haruhi's poignant observations were very well crafted especially the one to wrap up the whole episode. We learned a lot about Kyouya, in an interesting way and I like him even more now.

For once the comedy actually detracted from my Oruan experiance, as the Renge/Ouran Rangers were not really touched on, but seemed to just fill time. Better forms of comic relief could have been used (the Club mistaking something for something else might have been better) but all in all the Kyouya backstory made this an excellent ep.

The vacation is over and the club gets back to business:

Edit: Pretty good episodes altogether. 19 was a weird one without a clear focusing on any character, 20 was history of the twins. At first I thought the twins' history, and focusing on the at all, would be all too overused as a theme, because they have certainly received attention in the past as well, but it turned out to be quite an interesting episode after all. But nevertheless I feel concentrating on Haruhi again some time soon wouldn't be bad. Still, the next ep could be very interesting.

Not very eventful, but we get some fun tidbits towards the end and an interesting side of Kaoru. Very refreshing to see a character reflect on his future.

One of the best episodes for far. Haruhi didn't have much of a role, though, which usually makes episodes a bit less interesting in my eyes, but this episode worked remarkably well. Perhaps because Kyouya and Tamaki are pretty much opposites.

Really liked this episode.
So now we enter the final arc of this season... the next couple episodes should be on a more serious note now.

Lunar - Ouran Host Club - 25

Another excellent episode, though Haruhi's reactions seem a little out of charachter. She has never shown any kind of jealousy before to my knowldge. But that Eclair bitch was so blatently evil I guess she just couldn't help it. I'm really going to miss this one when it's gone, this show evokes such a good blend of emotions and does an excelllent job or revealing the depths of the charachters.

I agree with what you said about Haruhi. She has been thick like a rock up to this point and it's just very unlike her to be jealous.

It is unlike haruhi, which is a good thing. It simply means that she has changed (and she should, because people do), and it just so happened that this change is her liking Tamaki. I honestly think this has happened too late. If they showed a bit of development between the two a few episodes ago it wouldnt have been this abrupt. But I still think its one of the best developments in the series.

Oh and by the way, the other girls are also different from eclair (who is a demon bitch) because of the fact that she seems to exert control over Tamaki, which no other girl (except Haruhi herself) has been able to do in the series. It would make sense that she got jealous because of that.

man i just thought it was a brilliant how they introduced tamaki's dad in as in incredibly strict dude and then make the similarities between tamaki and his dad so blatantly obvious! lolol
the interaction between the two fellas is fun to watch aswell, like you can just see that they have somewhat of a good relationship.

ufff...i really hate series(in a good way) that have such deep and complex character development, it always makes me so depressed as i see the episode no. get closer and closer to the end, cause like teh characters really grow on you...like tamaki and co. have totally grown on me it's such a shame that the series is coming to an end...=(

And here we are. Farewells again to another great show. If I were a more emotional fellow, this would make me really sad with all the series ending around this same time. Well, it still does.

Episode 26 Final - Lunar

An interesting last episode to say the least. This whole series was an odd mix of comedy and more serious issues that were still often somewhat hard to accept as serious issues with such characters and settings. It was like serious comedy. In this final episode comedy was clearly in a minor role. They had really succeeded in building excellent and believable relationships between the characters, with Tamaki in the center, and how that all seemed to be in peril didn't much have comedic feeling. But keeping this in mind, it was an excellent episode in all its seriousness.

I kind of felt sorry for eclair though..i love it how some anime series make you sympathise with the supposed villians =P, lol the philosophy of there being no ultimate right or wrong...

I liked how they portrayed eclair during the moment tamaki was about to leave as appearing to sincerely not wanting to lose him when she clung onto his arm...then a flash of pain as she makes the decision to let him go...then following up with the housekeeper scene and all...ultimately revealing her side of the story


The convo at the end between kouya's and tamaki's dad was interesting aswell hahaha they wanna claim haruhi as their sons future bride! lol Maybe for tamaki but would kouya? like he's not really shown any interest in her i don't think? or is that just part of his cool guy character act? mnnnn so many questions ><

imma gonna go hunt for the ost now...wheeee feeling happy :D

A fabulous series and I really liked the way they ended it. It was never really a romance and they didn't try to shove one down our throats at the last minute, which I shouldn't have to applaud but since it's happened so much I figure the studio deserves some credit.

Ouran was a great coming of age story that I'll probably remember all the way until the next coming of age anime comes along and knocks it out of my short term memory (sad but unfortunately true). I wonder what Lunar will do for it's next project though.

This certainly had an excellent ending. I was worried that the last episode was going to be rushed, but it certainly didn't feel like it.
One can only hope for a 2nd season if possible, haha.

I just rewatched the 4th episode, where Renge-chan's character is introduced and she tries to change the Host Club and give it a more shadowy side. Its funny, because she transforms most of them into the people before they joined the club. Honey was trying to be tough, the twins were introverted, and Suou was lonely.

Ending was nice for the series. They did a full circle about "Handsome men don't get wet" and how the Host Club was a super-rich game.

i was expecting to be thoroughly sad when this series ended, as it became one of my favourite ones of the season. but after watching the ending, i felt content instead. everything wound up very nicely. i'd be ecstatic if they made a second season, but honestly, i don't think it's needed. it would be nice to see tamaki's mother's situation resolved, though. maybe i'll take up the manga...

anyway, i don't know if anyone's interested, but apparently the second ouran ost has been out for more than a month. sadly, i only just found out about it last night.

Reviving an old thread but

I just watched this series and it was great! I really like finding full series of this quality to watch. everything was well done, all characters were detailed. this was really a good story. I recommend it to ppl who haven't watched it.

(as an aside... who the hell names their kid "Eclair" espcially if their last name is "Tonnerre". aren't there laws to prevent that?)

Good rythm, good contrasts, nice alternance of comedy and deeper plots.

Regarding Eclair Tonnerre or Lightning Thunder, she is exactly that. She's Flashy, comes very quickly, sounds dangerous... but in the end has little effects on the world.
It's also nice she's named like this, as Haruhi is afraid of Lightnings and Thunders...

I was a bit afraid this show would be a bit too gay, but in fact it was very light (except for Haruhi's father...) and amusing all the way.

I LOLED a lot with the reference to the Weapons of Mass Destruction... when the shota boy shouldn't ever fight at 100% in public, to prevent Japan from being attacked by the UN for having weapons of mass destruction

Well the last update wasn't that old.

Plus I tend to think that once in a while showing a great thread to newcomers, or people that didn't notice at first, is a good idea to spread info about such great series. It shouldn't be used to much however ;)

the first dvd set of ouran was released in stores in north america today. it includes the first 13 episodes. anyone thinking of getting it?
