The first half of Railgun anime was animated almost faithfully. It just expanded a bit of Saten and Uiharu. The 2nd half consisted of half filler and half series created with the author input... but just that... input... the author didn't write it, so the characters became bland or cliched. The real 2nd half of Railgun, unanimated at this moment, is superb. It may lack the confrontation of Magic vs Science... but it helps to fill lots of holes from Index (at least on Mikoto's side)

Index (S1) and Railgun got recently licensed by Funimation... whereas a company I hadn't heard of before, Seven Seas or something, is going to publish the Index manga... until june 2011... bleh. I want the novels. All 22 of them.
On second thought... it ain't surprising Index sells more than Haruhi... Haruhi only has 9 novels whereas Index has 22...

This felt more like a summary and introduction episode than any real episode standing on its own. Even without the blatant flashbacks. But I guess it's cool, even though it hasn't been that long since Railgun. At least the scene after the credits felt like a real beginning of a second season.
Regardless it was pretty good. The best scene in the actual episode was of course Sphinx helpfully leading Touma to a... trashcan and the remains of a fish. Considering what manner of an episode this was having such a basic Mikoto scene in was fitting as well. Her flashy antics were a good reminder of why I like her character so much in combination with Touma.
This will surely be one of the best shows of the season. Oh, and the best scene of it all was the completely crazed appearance of Accelerator in the OP. The bullet must have knocked a few screws really loose in its wake.
So index is still an annoying self entitled brat ... gotta love consistency

Accelerator is getting some of the spotlight as well? That's surprising. I also wonder if that bullet to the head made him a tad less HAXXOR, if not any and every fight involving him will be terribly dull.

Hmmm. I'm honestly surprised they decided to animate this small arc after all. They did skip it last season in order to enter they Hyoka arc.
Answering both of you, Kraco and Archie, about the particular flashbacks we saw, specially when Mikoto came into scene... this episode is called August 31st. Its the last day of summer vacation. Meaning this takes place before the Hyoka arc (which takes place on September 1st)
And not just that.
This episode takes place at the same time Accelerator is saving Last Order. The very same night. And to end it... it takes place a few hours after Touma fought the fake-Mitsuki-Aztec-magician that has a crush on Mikoto, that is why she blushed so much this time around. She still had fresh on her mind whatever Touma said (since we never learnt it)
This story was the weakest of the 3 small stories that take place on August 31st, so I wasn't surprised it was skipped last time. Even so... the manga did present this in the actual timeline before Hyoka.
My guess is that they decided they wanted to animate everything after all... and to start the season with an episode semi-focused on Index.
Regarding the opening. Im quite happy to see Accelerator between the 'main' characters this time around. I hope to see more of the bastard. And like I said before... wow at the number of characters.
Anyone surprised the ending shows Mikoto first? And even between Touma and Index?
The epilogue with Kanzaki and Tsuchimikado was awesome. Im very interested on why Kanzaki is acting against the English.
Nah, I'm not surprised at all. Granted, I haven't read the source material and thus my words are nothing but guesses, but surely the author realised early on most readers would be Mikoto-Touma shippers. Hell, the author himself might be one. I wouldn't exactly call this high literature so pleasing the audience to a certain degree is given as well. What I'm saying is that if the audience wants to see Mikoto+Touma scenes, they should receive them.Quote:

I had forgotten the extent of how terrible Touma's life is due to that curse of luck. He comes out of this adventure with no homework done, a completely trashed apartment (even Stiyl never burned his down), and presumably a large bill from the family restaurant.
Concerning Mikoto, I've always liked that she comes off as her own age in Index. She acts much more like an impulsive middle school girl with a crush than the more mature and responsible (yet irresponsible) way she's portrayed in Railgun. What does a super-powered little lovesick girl do when she gets ignored? She lashes out and destroys a trash-bot, then doesn't really know how to respond next and gets all flustered.
I also give much respect to the oft-maligned-here Index. She's a great counter to the dry Touma. The funniest parts with her is when she acts all mature because while she is a nun and full of wisdom despite her age, it is so out of character with the view Touma normally sees. Similar in age to Mikoto, she also serves as a really good rival to Mikoto for Touma's attention and possible affections. It is especially insulting to Mikoto because Index is so needy (needing rescue/food), childish, and annoying. It is a harsh reminder to Mikoto, who is also needy (emotionally) and very childish.
Animation was good, OP wasn't bad, ED was meh, and the little background actions throughout the episode of Sphinx were a nice touch.
What bill? They didn't even manage to order anything before the waitress dumped the load of food on top of Touma and his papers. If anything, Touma should be receiving compensation. The actual damage to the property was performed by the mage in its entirety. It had nothing to do with Touma and no amount of unluck can change that.Quote:

The manga in the Hyoka arc, for instance, had to introduce Himegami, as her 'boring' arc was skipped on the manga. LOL.
I also didn't like the restaurant's staff glaring at Touma... but well... Ryll is right here. They must think of them as 'friends' since events like this must be common on this town. Anyone notice NONE of the other customers even moved from their chair and didn't seem fazed about the attack?

Oh, how I missed Touma and his misfortunes! This episode was awesome.
I couldn't get into this episode, and the OP song didn't help neither.
However, the amount of hot nuns is promising.
Awesome. Season just begun and another girl enters Touma's harem. And boy... Agnesse has done more with Touma than other girls so far. Pantie shot, Nude hug and underwear sleep.
Its actually nice, for a change, seeing Index being useful. But her bitch biting showed she's still an annoying brat.
It might not have been the best decision to just stand and stare there anyway. Even if Agnesse was hugging him. It wasn't his fault in the beginning, since it's a time proven fact he needs to keep saving Index, but it certainly turned into his fault when he didn't disengage and exit. He deserved those bites.
All in all nothing much yet happened in this episode. If Touma had had faster reflexes and thinking faculties, he could have even prevented Orsola from being kidnapped. But he's kind of slow in that respect. Has he ever even fought against somebody and been the one delivering the first strike?
This doesn't look like an arc where we will be seeing Mikoto. But I'm sure we will in the next one!
Episode 2: now with 100% more nuns!
For some reason, when Touma tried to grab Agnesse before she fell, I was imagining that her clothes would rip apart like Index's. :o
Slutty nuns = combat nuns? I don't know, miniskirt nuns just don't do it for me, even when their garter belts are showing. Orsola and her full length habit (and voiced by Endou Aya, mmm) was much better than the other new nuns.
I didn't notice it last season when she first showed up, by Archbishop Laura's hair is probably twice as long as she is tall. It doesn't end down by her knees, it folds over, goes all the way back up into the loop, and then finally ends mid-back. It's a crazy design, terribly impractical, but one that I like.
What I really liked was how Index described Amakusa magic. It's all about secret gestures, escaping, and hiding, perfect for a sect of Japanese Christians.
There's too many petankos in Touma's harem.

Isn't Stiyl Anglican? Why would he fight for the Roman Catholics against Touma? Agnesse is a different matter of course. What comes to Touma, he doesn't even need any excuses, considering the Catholics suddenly backstabbed him and tried to kill him. He can do whatever he wants and nobody can complain. Knowing him he will go to rescue the escaping nun once again.
This is a pretty chaotic arc for sure.

Touma and Styl's tag combo was pretty cool.
Hmm...1) and 2), not really. Yukariko was very much in the same style as Orsola. By the preview for next episode, they likely have the exact same hairstyle. The white coif and veil are the important part for nun appeal. Boots...can help, but even then, only with very specific kinds of nuns (that means just Rosette Christopher). MugenTatemiya Saiji described it, Amakusa specialize in evasion. Their attacks don't use magic, they're simple swords. That was why Touma wouldn't be effective, he needs to touch their magic to negate it, and their magic's purpose is to prevent them from being grappled or caught. I see them more like the magicians from DenYuDen, using magic to enhance their physical abilities. The worst that would happen to them if Touma touches them is they wouldn't be able to as overwhelmingly dodge. Any offensive attack could still kill Touma. We saw it before with his first encounter with Kanzaki.
A real magician that realized how his skill works could do the same. They'd use defensive magics and kill him normally. Index pointed that out because the primary reason Touma has been winning is through the shock factor. No magician expects their magic to be nullified out of existence, same for Espers. If they're not surprised, they'll just tear him apart.
Now that word is getting out about the growing strength of the Touma "faction," we will likely see more magicians who know how to deal with him.
Magicians aren't traditionally the toughest muscle monsters around. Take away their magic and the field is even. Except that Touma has always fought with his fists, the magicians with their magic and thus will need to get used to mundane fights.

Athough the episode was good there isn't much to discuss, maybe we can exchange opinions on who kicked the most nun ass or which one of them was taken out in the funniest way.

I also don't quite understand how they keep saying Index doesn't have any magic, but can use the books etc. They also aren't being very clear on what "magic" is. This show doesn't seem to use the concept of Mana, after all, which would be the normal assumption.
Index isn't really using the magic in the books, she's strictly using the knowledge.
It's the same way her spell intercept works. She can use abbreviated spell incantations to cause distortions in the way a spell was meant to work. Similarly, Sheol Fear sings out vast quantities of inconsistencies, contradictions, and counterpoints to a certain viewpoint. But like Stiyl says, it works best when she is fighting an idealogical group. She can assume most of them think in the same or at least very similar manner, so she uses teachings from the books to counter their belief system and break them down psychologically through doubt. The effect drives into one's root beliefs so strongly that it causes intense anxiety and fear.
But it only works on "pure" individuals. Agnesse, the leggy blond, and probably Angelene are not affected because they are anything but pure (which is why the leggy one didn't stab her own eardrums out too). Agnesse at least has so many doubts already (with her calling this world "shit dripping").
I wouldn't say Index has been upgraded, it is just that only at the end of the last season and the start of this one could she finally begin to act. Kanzaki and Stiyl would never have actually hurt her, and the majority of their other opponents were acting as individuals, with no strongly defined belief system or structure, so it would have been very difficult for Index to guess which passages in the tomes would cause the full effect of Sheol Fear. Similarly, Spell Intercept only works on isolated (non-automaton) summons and distracted spellcasters. There have been very few magicians who were not utterly single-minded in their missions last season, and many of their opponents weren't even using magic.
So it is only now that her vast pool of knowledge can finally be applied.
It's weird to me that Spell Intercept can work by using mere words, and no magic at all. I'll need to find an analogy for it.
And I thought the "Index can't use magic" part was BS by the church. Her defence mechanism that destroyed a satellite seemed like pretty powerful magic to me.
I think my overall confusion is that Index is, after all, doing something. If she was truly incapable of magic, she'd only be able to recall/understand/explain things to everybody around her, and let them perform the counter-actions. The fact that she's performing something other than a physical task but isn't magic melts my brain.
The fact that she's sending out these incantations qualifies as magic to me. Normal people muttering those same "incantations" won't have that effect, right?Quote:

It's like a radio wave. The transmitter is pulsing out electromagnetic waves in an expected manner, and Index comes in like solar flares inserting bursts of static. In retrospective this arc wasn't all that interesting when compared to the ones from the original Index, it's just that after Railgun the bar was set so low that pretty much anything would satisfy my hunger for plot

It didn't feel like such a bad arc, though to a degree I agree with Archie: After Railgun anything would have been fine. But it's true this wasn't very intensive and focused. Too many characters that were, by necessity, left quite superficial. The Kanzaki visiting Touma scene was nice, though.
As the next arc features Mikoto, it should be jolly good, assuming Touma is involved. And since this is his series, I don't see why he wouldn't be.

I don't get why Touma went to see Agnese. She was sitting the fight out the whole time without doing any commanding, so it wasn't like she needed to be distracted (unless it's to hold her in the room so she doesn't come out to see them setting up the cards). He could have helped put up some cards himself.
The fight with her also felt lacking in that he never really figured out what he should block. The only thing that was apparent was that there was some form of bubble-field around Agnese that he broke. If anything, he should have grabbed onto her staff to negate any of its powers, and pounded her with his left fist.
We can assume she has been extremely dense and stressed up until now. Perhaps she finally now feels like everything will be fine and she views Touma as the one to primarily thank for it all, because in him personifies the will to help her (and her people and Index) for no ulterior motives. She was a part of the Amakusa sect so chances are she has been hiding much of her personality anyway.Quote:

She can't ever cross the Anglican Church. The Archbishop may have collared Kanzaki tighter, but she's starting to lose Stiyl to Touma.
In terms of power he is weaker, but he makes a great double agent. He, like Touma, is becoming loyal to people (Index, Kanzaki, etc.), not to organizations.

and that blonde guy (which was way cooler in the first series than he is right know... damn "all knowing behavior") said something among the lines "thats not the way we should thank him, all he saw was your body" and Kanzaki answered "I know, but....." <---- its a bit more obvious in the series but for me that made clear that Kanzaki started to feel something for him, it sounded like she wouldn't care if someone sees her naked normaly

Now we are talking! I suppose the previous nun arc served some larger purpose with faction revelations, but still this arc that refers back to the level 6 experiment feels like 100% clear material. It made the whole experiment look even more ominous by having Kuroko try to understand bits and pieces of it based on too little information. I'm actually no fan of Kuroko, but shifting the main attention to her from Misaka worked wonderfully here, probably much much better than having the focus on Misaka herself.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Touma finds himself again in the middle of it, as I deem it unlikely Misaka would seek him out for assistance (the preview actually suggested Index might get herself involved first, God only knows how since food isn't involved). Secondly, Accelerator was a joyous appearance. It's easy to believe he's indeed just as crazy as the OP hints.
It was nice to see how the future Last Order - Accelerator relationship works. She and the others really hold the keys to power now. He is dependent on them, must protect them, but he's powerless if Last Order wishes it. It's also kind of cute they set them up with Yomikawa. Perhaps he may get involved the the really hairy Anti-Skill stuff, where his abilities would be the most useful. It looks like he's going to get involved in this one.
Aside from Index destroying the satellite, and Touma knowing Mikoto and the MISAKAs, I'm not sure how they're going to bring about their involvement.
Like Kraco said, I too like the way they've shifted to Kuroko instead of Mikoto. It's nice to see someone so utterly out of the loop. They didn't do that too well with Mikoto and Kuroko's introduction to magic last season. It did seem kind of weird they were generally okay with it all. It's refreshing to see someone, especially in Kuroko's position, so naive about things even with someone so close to her.
The Kuroko/Musujime powers parallel is very interesting. We discussed our thoughts on some of the finer points of Kuroko's powers last season, but this part, and next episode, will expand on this. From the looks of things and Uiharu's explanation, Musujime can only move things remotely. She appears to have a really good range, but there already seem to be a few limitations.
- Uiharu mentioned she hesitates to teleport herself. Kuroko likely has her beat there since she never seems to hesitate.
- Uiharu also said that Musujime can't interfere with similar powers, so if Kuroko touches something and sends it, it's hers.
- Kuroko mentioned in Railgun comparing herself to her "rival" Kongo Mitsuko that she teleports things beyond the mere three dimensions, I forget exactly how many. We came to the conclusion that last season that Kuroko can add things to her targets. Momentum, velocity, vectors, etc. She definitely displays such aptitude with her own body. She teleports in place and comes out with a flying kick.
On the other hand, Musujime doesn't seem to have that capability. She just remotely translates her target from point A to point B. Nothing else changes. The people she grabs are immediately taken by gravity. The needles she stole from Kuroko simply appear in her body. Kuroko can give those things some real momentum after just brushing them with her fingers. Musujime was physically throwing the needles at Kuroko.
- Musujime uses that wand (looks like a flashlight) for some reason. It's not clear what it's for. Maybe...she isn't an Esper?!
Either way, I think Kuroko has plenty of advantages because her potential is a lot higher, and the method by which her powers work requires a lot more mental capacity. She just hasn't mastered everything yet. I kind of wonder that if she did eventually grow to level 5, if she'd also be able to remotely grab things.
Aaaaaaand Index is a useless piece of shit again... Other than that and the lack of Touma that was pretty nice.

Episode was full of win. Mikoto, Kuroko, Uiharu, Accelerator, Last Order aka 20001 and MISAKA Imouto aka 10032
Kuroko needs to find out what really happened now. With the information she's gotten... it would be kinda anticlimatic she didn't learn the existance of the SISTERS at this point.
The preview suggests both Touma and Accelerator will have a more active role next time. I hope for mayhem.

Detective work by Kuroko, the whole jumping through the city night thing (that's always sick, no matter who does it), the lot.
The injuries she sustained are best described as brutal. We know Kuroko's perfectly capable of such acts (she cut down an entire building with glass), and she's disabled firearms with her ability countless times - having done on a human's a first, and is much highlighted by those bloody bandages.
I particular, I really liked her eyes.
Man.. seeing Last Order actually teasing Accelerator speaks loads about them - and in particular how much she's grown (mentally) since then. Accelerator's still popping veins, but he's no longer going schizo (mainly since he can't follow it up with any physical threat). It's so much fun now that someone's put a brake on him.Quote:

From UTW's translations, they state that she doesn't teleport herself. To me, that means it's physically possible, but due to either a physical or mental barrier (be it injury, mental trauma) she doesn't doesn't. Because of all that, it seemed strange how she managed to escape from Misaka there. It doesn't feel like she'd teleport herself, but that's the only explanation for how she got off (and got on) there in the first place.
I think she can and will teleport herself if needed, but she will always hesitate before doing so. That hesitation will get her ass handed to her by Kuroko.
He put the brake on himself. After all, he only got injured because he willingly decided to save Last Order, not kill her or abandon her to her fate. Now he's paying the price. Still, I'm satisfied Last Order is like this and not being all emo trying to think how to ever pay him back the huge favour. It should also be better for Accelerator this way (to have cheery Last Order around; I'm not talking about the brain damage) as I don't think he previously had any human contacts whatsoever aside from dealing with the scumbag scientists and their ilk.Quote:

Ten is hugely significant in the long run. If you've been following popular physics discussions in the last few years, that means that eventually, Kuroko could teleport something and change everything about it. The laws of physics that govern it (internal structure), velocity vectors (she already has that), maybe even someone's history and personality. She could literally shift to a different reality/timeline. She'd probably give herself an aneurysm doing so...but she could do it. For her little bout with Musujime, it won't mean much because she's still a level 4 (which for Kuroko means seems more like she's actually able to use her complex ability with any kind of proficiency), but it could mean something amazing later on. Just a cheap guess, but my take on Kuroko's ability is that "touch" limitation. Or at least it might be one of the steps to overcome in order to go to level 5.
An other point is that the other teleport user was extremely surprised Kuroko still had metal pins available. I'd have to rewatch the scene to know if it was just a mistake on her part, not counting right or missing that spot.
It's impossible to know by counting them. I tried. I think I also did try last season, but we do not really know how many there are.
It's just that maybe for those pins Kuroko does not need touching to teleport them in the holsters... that would mean she gets more and more control on her ability.
I don't know about that. Accel was grinding sisters to gather experience and served as an experience to explore his powers. More computation power isn't quite the same as that, and his previous prowess wasn't dependant on such a thing anyway.Quote:

Looks like he's picked up close combat from Touma too, unless he purposely chose that so his projectiles won't get teleported away. Musujime could have teleported Accelerator a few miles away then go into hiding if she wasn't scared shitless.

I was slightly dissapointed that Kuroko didn't learn about the existance of the SISTERS but oh well. It was awesome anyway.
Accelerator rocked. And Last Order is very cute. I, like Ryll, wonder if Mikoto was like this when younger.
The action sequence when Kuroko was being saved lost me a bit. Mazui's release said that Musujime was going to teleport 4 tons of stuff to hit the building and collapse it - but what was shown didn't make too much sense. (the translation made me think of an asteroid collision).
Touma's "cancel" made it look like a Musujime was after replacing or removing Kuroko's building instead.
She didn't say she was going to teleport 4 tons on top of it, only that she could. I assumed that what she was teleporting was the whole building.
What i felt was confusing was how her trauma was never explained and neither was her mental breakdown after shooting Kuroko
Still, good arc. The preview shows a staggering amount of new boobs, Friday can't come soon enough.
The episode did explain this. Kuroko mentioned her trauma came from having a bad teleport. She even suggested (and may already know it) that Musujime may have teleported herself within an object. Which happened as well when she fought Accelerator... she teleported towards a glass and one embedded inside of her.Quote:

I don't think that's what happened. If she teleported with a bit of glass inside her, then she'd be vomiting up blood, not simply gastric fluid. It looked like the normal trauma reaction to me. Even though it's not the exact same power, Kuroko explained that teleporting displaces whatever was originally there with whatever you teleported. That means she'll replace the glass, not the other way around.Quote:
