Actually, the only places that are truly translucent are the edges of her scarf. The rest is a combination of lighting, selective colour filters, and the dodge/burn tool.

I'd take a shot at this if you posted some pictures. It's often fairly time-consuming to hunt down a good-quality picture to work with, so it's a nice courtesy to the sig-maker if you do this step first.Quote:

Hi, guys. Would anybody please help me edit a wallpaper for my psp. I would very much like a new sig (500x125) made from this image. If possible I'd like 'Yukimura' to go up her arm but if that can't be made to work I'm not chained to it.
I'll try to hunt around for the render without the background later tonight but I don't know if I will be able to or not. Hopefully the relatively simple gradient background will make cutting easier if I can't find it.
I already have that render. What kind of sig are you aiming for? What style or colours? If I have the time, I can take you up on the request.

For colors I prefer cooler colors, blues, purples, and greens. In this case I think a blueish theme would be nice but I would have never thought of brown with the render you used on your newest sig so I'm not too confident in my judgment.
As for style I'm not much of a designer or artistic things but one thing about style I can come up with from looking at the sigs of the posters above is I prefer 'larger' background structures (comparing to the tight lines that take up a lot of the left of your sig to the more abstract background structures of most of the other sigs on this page). I like the abstract nebulous background structures like clouds in KitKat's or the cogs in Archangel's. Musical symbols in the background could work for this actually.

BTW, how much of Mio do you want to see in the sig? I know you want the arm in, but is it OK if the arm band doesn't go in (the blue and black one) or should I make it part of the sig? This is all for render positioning.
Well naturally I want the maximum Mio possible, but I don't want her looking too distorted by trying to fit too much into the limited vertical space, if the arm band must be sacrificed for the sake of getting a good amount of her head and hair and (and the hat) then I can deal.

Is there any way to add a bit more depth/detail to Hei? He's drawn pretty flat/simplistically in the anime anyway, so I'm not really expecting anything different. Maybe I'm just spoilt by my current.
And since I was talking about depth, the darker one felt better. It's more moody, while the lighter one was more clean, which felt a bit inappropriate for a character like Hei.
I really liked how you've made the green theme consistent for both sig and avatar. It really makes them match despite being two different characters/shows. If fact, it's subtle enough that they're a matching-difference (man my vocab suck).
There's a little sadness(or is it reluctance?) in "shelving" my current set, since I still like them and haven't tired of them yet, but a fresh set befits the coming of Darker than Black 2. I shall start using it.

edit: I just remembered that both characters wear "opera" masks when they go into assassin mode. How fitting.

While there is the fact that DTB2 is coming out soon, the main reason I used Hei for Buff's sig is because I simply cannot imagine any other character to replace him with. It seems that in my head, Buff actually looks like Hei or something. I guess that is the effect of keeping a sig for very long, something I probably won't experience considering my propensity to change sigs and avatars regularly.

Well, I tried... but the best way I could figure to go about doing it was to use the pen tool to select the black area, then replace the colour with a reddish-orange... but that looked choppy and I couldn't get it to blend right.
Personally though, I much prefer your current version. The black makes it stick out more.
However if you have an idea as to how I can go about fixing it, I'll take another shot. If not, I'll just leave it to Luci or Shinta to pick up.
By all means, anyone looking for a signature change, feel free to post a request!
I'm sure to answer, just as I'm sure there are a few more Photo-shop junkies who would be willing to take a request.

I can't really come up with a decent background for this, so I'm throwing it out there to see what comes back. I like negative space, but I'm at a loss with what to do with this much.
I've got the colors and levels on Kagura (from the Ga-Rei manga) the way I would like them for a final product, so please don't mess around with them too much. I'm not a big fan of text either, so don't go overboard.

Also, @Kage... I was browsing through my renders earlier this week and I found a sage mode Naruto that I believe is the exact same image as yours, but it has the correct sage eyes, if you want me to send it to you so you can fix your sig when you get a chance.

I added a bit of text in the corner, a reference to Kagura's favorite brand.
I'm typically against text, but it adds some balance to the image across the diagonal.

I like it. I might suggest changing the text colour to the same colour as the sakura petals.
I think it needs a border, even a very thin light coloured one.
I also think shortening the width of the sig will really help the balance. While I know Ryll loves negative space, there will still be tons of it even if the sig width is reduced, and the focus of the sig will improve as well.
I think adding a very faint glow effect and adjusting the colour of the text a bit will do wonders. The more similar it is to the sakura leaves, the less intrusive it will be.
Ryll hates borders... I had a thin black one in the .psd, and he told me he raged about it when he saw it, haha.
I forgot to mention a glow effect on the text as well, in the same colour as the sakura leaves.
I think the sakura is a little bit overwhelming and takes away from the render. If it were me, I'd probably erase selectively to thin it out closer to her face so that it doesn't look like her face is emitting a constant stream of leaves. Actually, yeah, maybe it's a distribution problem that makes it look so unnatural, because the distribution is this perfect diagonal which defies the laws of gravity. Maybe see how it looks with less petals and the width decreased like shinta suggested to balance the focus a bit but still keep the same proportion of negative space, which I think would also keep the distribution from looking so artificial. Looks nice though! I really love the vibrancy of the render against the muted colours of the background.
