Was the original like this? It seems like the mecha are retro and it has a less serious tone than I was expecting.

no... the first one was very different... it was more serious... but Gunbuster 2 is better than i expected... i thought it would be more crappy

Yes, this Gunbuster is better than I expected, with some feel of the original Gunbuster, but mostly different. I miss the scientific explainations in the end of the first series that is so far missing in this series. I guess they can't scientifically explain the powers the girls have. Also, the character moving around in the vacuum of space will be a little hard to explain, too. I guess it might be a move towards unscientific for this series.

Nice, I'm still waiting for all episodes to get released before I watch the rest of it. I've only seen the first episode so far.

Man the colors they use in this episode are nuts my eyes still burn, and this may just be because im getting old but it seems like all the speeches and talking that happens with officials is a waste. I get nothing from them all I understand in space monsters are bad Nono is good and watching this show while sitting too close to your monitor will hurt your eyes =O

Also the fact that I have to wait a few months for the last episode is gonna make me hate Jesus him self =(
