Ok this question has been bugging me since Gundam Seed, so I'll finally ask it. In the beginning of Seed, the Archangel is trying to get back to Earth, and it was a huge pain the ass. They flew all over the place and took a good 10 episodes. After that we see people going back and forth between Plant and Earth like it's a block away.

So my question is: just how far is Plant from Earth? It seems like a really long distance and two separate worlds, but people go back and forth in those little shuttles like it's nothing. It's weird.

I can imagine that the PLANTs are within the Earth Sphere, just like the colonies were in the original MSG. That distance is about the length of behind the moon to allll the way to near Mar's Asteroid Belt.

Hope this helped.

archangel was at heliopolus(or whatever it's called) not PLANT, so it may have been in a further orbit than PLANT is.

I am quoting from the glossary that came with the official DVD.

'Roughly a hundred of these constructs are gathered at Lagrange point 5, a gravitationally stable area in Earth orbit, and together they make up the Coordinators' homeland.'

Edit: I realize this doesn't answer your question about how far away they are...

Voila!

I believe there are also lagrange points for the earth and the moon, instead of the sun and earth, but i'm not sure...

Edit: I just checked my Char's counter-attack dvd booklet and there are. They are in the same positions too, so in the pics in the links just replace the sun with the earth and the earth with the moon. I'm going to try and find some gundam maps...

Since L5 has the same distance from the earth as the moon the average distance from PLANT to Earth would be 384401 km

NomoZ, you are correct, each planet or sun has its own lagrange points in its orbit.
So the distance from PLANT to Earth is exactly same as the distance between the moon and the earth

I think some of the difficulty is related to the fact that there are only a few places on earth where there are facilities available to launch a ship into space. As far as I can tell no ship can just fly up independently. Also, you can't just land anywhere, you need an ocean, and you have to travel to a site that's near a freindly base.

I don't think thats true, Archangel landed in the desert in GS amid unfriendly territory
