whats the best codec that play every format?

It doesn't really work that way. You need a combination of a few, but not too many. I'm out of date with the latest builds but I know for sure that too many installed does damage rather than help.

I've got the XviD codec, and it's run everything I've used so far.

Well, ffdshow decodes most of everything. And it takes up less cpu, but I still prefer having ffdshow deconding divx 3. And I would have XviD decode divx 5 and xvid.

For other files like... .ogm .mkv I would have different codecs. However for .mkv I just use mpc (Media Player Classic). I forgot what you needed for ogms, but you can always google it ;O
