I've really been liking this series so far. 12 chapters are out, partway through volume 4. First, a proper description.

Soul Eater is about several students at a school for Shinigami. They all operate in pairs, one who can turn into a weapon, appropriately called a Weapon, and a Technician, who uses their transformed partner. The Weapons eat bad souls in society. In order to train themselves, the Technician and Weapon must consume 99 souls and the soul of a witch to become proper Shinigami. The story follows Maka, a young, smart Technician, and her parter Soul Eater, who transforms into a scythe.

It's funny series with a weird artistic style, those who've read Rave Master or Shaman King will probably see some similarities. The series is definitely a comedy, but there are a lot of good action parts.

manga-rain is currently scanning the series, doing an excellent job as always.

I've been meaning to read this... does it have a constant plot throughout the series? Like a series long mystery, or various connecting arcs.

Ryllharu
Fri, 03-23-2007, 10:01 AM
Partway in the second volume I believe, they introduce an arc that has to do with the witches, and presumably will run the course of the series. It has a lot of smaller arcs and stand alone chapters, but the one arc is in the background of every arc that follows it.

Sorry if that sounds vague, I'm trying not to spoil until someone else catches up.

Started reading some of the intro chapters and couldn't get into it, didn't like the style and seemed kinda dumb at times. The story telling style seemed to remind me of My Name is Zushio, which I didn't like either.

Well, seeing as there's an anime now and it has been quite good, I'm going to start reading the manga.

Any of you guys up-to-date with it? Since the anime started there has been constant releases of the series, so we should have frequent/weekly releases from here on out or something.

Mahou-x picked up were Manga-Rain left off. They're up to volume 7 chapter 25 at the moment. In Japan, the manga is currently at volume 11.

Well chapter 26 just recently got released:

I'm finally caught up to the latest release, and this has been a cool series to read. Freaking introductory chapters prevented me from getting into this series, thankfully the anime brought a renew interest on the series. If the anime follows this closely or remotely closely, it should turn out to be a great series.

A ton of powerful enemies have come up, but it's wierd that Maka and company haven't been collecting souls for a while now. I like the insanity spreading bit, especially with Stein getting all crazy, and you don't know when he's about crack.

I'm glad Medusa is still making appearances, she was a cool character... I hope they give her a great VA.

Dark Dragon
Fri, 05-02-2008, 02:03 PM
I doubt Medusa is dead (at least i don't want her to be) since there was a few hints at her being alive. The Death Scythes that Shinigami called in all seems to be badass and i can't wait to see what they can do.

I can totally see Medusa reviving and then seduce an insane Stein into working for Asura.

Munsu
Fri, 05-02-2008, 06:55 PM
Seeing the snake leave through the sewers, and then seeing how her big sister survived by dividing herself into spiders, then surely she's still alive. But, I was more reffering to how Stein's insanity keeps her around in a fairly frequent manner. She's my favorite character so far.

Yeah, all the Death Scythes seem like badasses... the Priest, was more kickass that I would've imagined. It was pretty cool seeing him fight by himself and with the earphones. It seems like that had some sort of impact on Soul, do you think he'll be doing some of the same... fighting alone? I myself think it will to some extent, but ultimately it will be about he and Maka getting more in-sync together.

Dark Dragon

I think Soul just feels inadequate since he constantly talks about being a cool man, there is really nothing cool about helplessly watching your partner get hurt when she is incapable of wielding you.

The Thompson sisters proved that they can handle themselves without kid and Tsubaki can transform into various weapon so she is handy for various situation. Soul is the only one so far who is probably completely helpless if his partner isn't around or is incapacitated so right now he is really a tool rather then a partner.

It would be really interesting to see Soul learning some new moves that will help him fight along side Maka in a synchronize manner

Mahou-X released up to 34, grab em at Mangatraders (http://www.mangatraders.com/)

Recently got caught up with the series and man it is getting good.

spoilers below:

It seems like we now have 3 factions fighting over the Demon Tools.

I'm really glad Medusa created her own group rather than join up with her sister and i'm really curious about the 3rd sister and when she will come into play.

Oh and Chrona inner conflict is also great since her unstable personality makes it hard to predict which route she might go.

BTW according to Wikipedia the Manga has been licensed by a newer group call Yen Press, who is serializing the manga in it's new monthly publication. You can probally ignore it and just wait for the volumes to appear, but that won't be till around 2008. Nontheless, /begins DLing.

Man, why didn't nobody tell me the girls in the manga are so damn HOT? Shower scenes, Maid-Liz, Formal-dress Maka, sheet-draped Crona, every Tsubaki scene........

............
..................
..........................

I need a tissue.

Anyway, I didn't expect things to turn out this differently. I'm guessing Arachne never actualy captured the Kishin neither. Ox was also a LOT cooler than what they made him out to be in the show. He still gives off the nerdy vibes, but rather than a conceited elitist confidence, it's just pure dedication to his loved one, which is totally cool.

Black Star's fights were sort of confusing to read, but it made enough sense so I'm not too bogged down on that.

This is a monthly release too? Bummer.

Caught up over the weekend, starting from volume 7, where the anime diverged.

Various comments:

- The dirty and dark humor is greatly increased in the manga. It's a nice touch, even if a lot of them are old man jokes.

- Black*Star's fights were pretty awesome, I loved the ink brush streaks they used (so it's like SF4, but it was more usefully stylized here).

- Maka's Black Blood dress was super sexy, despite her lack of figure.

- I really liked the side story about Kim and Ox. It gives a little bit of hope for Angela now that Mifune is reduced to so many petals. If her powers are mostly shitty invisibility going with her chameleon theme, she's no more destructive than Kim is, and would probably fit in better at Shibusen than with the other witches.

- But I am most worried about Patty and Liz. I loved the way they dealt with Giriko, "doing something they used to do quite often." Now that Kidd is captured, I wonder what they will possibly do now. Tied with Tsubaki, Patty and Liz have usually been my favorite characters.

With the anime finished I decided to have a look at the differences between it and the manga. Quite a ride it was, once the differences began. However, aside from the very end of the anime, I don't actually think, now that I've read what's out of the manga, that the anime was particularly poor. It used the elements rather decently.

Like Ryll, I liked Kim and Jacqueline's story. Angela's fate is obviously open at the moment, with Mifune dead (which was one nice and ruthless difference). I wonder what will happen to her. Though like Ryll said, if Kim and Jasq can return, there's really no reason why Angela couldn't be taken care of as well. Who knows. In any case, both would require a change of atmosphere and thinking over at Death City.

One thing that bothered me from the beginning is how Mifure (and Angela) always felt so slapped on characters. He was basically just hanging there, guarding a character of even lesser significance. He had no connection to Arachne, other than being there, he had no aims (nor did Angela), no villainy, no... nothing. His only meaning was to fight Black Star. They were decent fights and forced Black Star to develop, but honestly those fights served no bigger purpose beyond that. I don't like it.

Soul Eater - Chapter 61 (http://www.onemanga.com/Soul_Eater/61/01/)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well i dare anyone to say they weren't surprised by these latest developments

While i enjoyed the chapter i found it annoying how they just kept repeating this so called "sway of magic" as it was common knowledge while us, the fans, are hearing about it for the first time.

Yeah. It was a very bad case of suddenly introducing a new story element. I can't recall whether we've ever been told before why all witches are seemingly evil, so maybe this is nothing but an oversight by the mangaka (he only now realised he needs to define it for the story to work). Or, in the worst case scenario, he never imagined the manga would continue this long and thus he never wrote the story this far, to begin with, and is now desperately planning more material.

An interesting chapter in any case. Shinigami is characteristically overly relaxed despite his son never coming back. What comes to Black Star, I have hard time imagining him lying to Angela about the situation. He got his whole clan, parents included, slaughtered by the people he's now serving, so from his own point of view Angela is nothing special. Not only that, but Black Star is hardly one to lie and circumvent the truth. I hope he will tell Angela how things really stand, and come up with something to make it work for her (with Tsubaki, I suppose, since Black Star only knows how to fight, not mend things).

As i read this, Kubo and Bleach came to mind. No idea why...

That would be pretty risky

Soul had a good point, she is still a child and as such still hasn't grasped both the concepts of good and evil completely. Having her father figure killed by the man and woman she thought were her friends might be too much for her to handle.

I can't help but think this was the result of a poor translation. I found the script to be quite badly edited. Some of the lines just staggered really poorly and sounded incredibly awkward. There was no feel for how different characters speak. Both Jackie and Sid saying, "I daresay..."? I'm not sure what the Japanese says precisely, but that is a terrible way to translate that patch of dialogue.

I did think they mentioned something to this effect during the convocation of witches that we saw just before Medusa had Free released. I can't remember the chapter though. It certainly was not addressed in the detail we see here.

The term "sway of magic" itself sounds rather awkward, though if you see it as just a modified version for "corruption of power" or something, I can live with it.

Anyway, it totally threw me off when Justin was revealed to be a bad guy. The anime sure changed things huh? I guess along with Marie's hammer form, they came up with Justin's Law-Abiding-Silver-Gun too. <- which was pretty awesome in its own right.

Somehow I foresaw it's not going to end well for Black Star, because if it had been a real fight, there wouldn't have been much excitement. Still, it was very pitiful, and even Angela told as much to the Mighty Black Star.

Speaking of Angela it seems like she's just hanging around. I had hoped we would learn her current situation in more detail, like where she is living and what manner of a future is in store for her. But I guess they need to sort out more important things first. Angela is good material for some breathers between the real things.

Black Star's fight ended in an appropriate manner. There's really no point to having either one pwn each other here, especially after establishing how good Patty is. Both managed to come out of that without a "I am stronger than you because I won" result.

The new uniforms totally overshadowed the Death Scythe powerup for me. Tsubaki and Liz look pretty sexy. They were good looking from the get-go though.

Ox &co's Men In Black getup is pimping though :D

Where did it say the Kishin was his partner? That's right, Justin Law mentioned he was serving the Kishin in chap 61, and now he's with Noah here.

If the Kishin is as big a pussy here as he was in the anime, I can certainly see him siding with Noah if Noah promises him "security". It's a shaky idea though, since in the anime he killed Arachne when he felt he relied on her too much.

I do think this powerup's for real. They'll really need it for whoever this new guy is, who is apparently "more appropriate" for assassinating Maka than Justin.

So is this going to mostly be Patty weilding Liz? If Patty is the far more proficient fighter, it only makes sense that she would become the "technician."

I like Tsubaki's new look, but Kim and Jackie didn't change at all... Their school uniforms were always a little bland to me, I would have liked to see something else. - Black Star's new design is insanely cool

- Soul seems to have a different look there, so maybe that's his death scythe look? I hope not since it's too similar to the regular version

I can't with any honesty say Maka's change of clothes would be an improvement. Her old one looked more convincing than this stock sailor fuku.

So, Soul is now a death scythe, but I'm not too sure it will immediately reflect in his powers. All in all this series has been more about gaining strength through training, discovery, and experience than by earning new powers as gifts from heaven. Which is of course a good thing.

Btw, does Tsubaki still have any more souls eaten than her brother's..? Even though Black Star lives in his own little world and only believes in his own big ideas, it'd still be kind of sad if Tsubaki never gets to eat those souls Soul is gorging all the time.

As Archie's post illustrated more clearly than any words could, Kidd's pairing will always be a threesome. The Thomson girls are pretty thoroughly devoted to him, and they're sisters, they know how to share.

As for Kidd himself, how could he be satisfied with anything less than a girl on each arm?

"Mirror mirror on the stand, could you connect me with Azu-nyan?" Haha.

Maka's dreams of an angel and Soul's inability to picture Maka as one were surely 100% consistent with everything seen so far. Looks like the troubles between those two haven't been magically fixed.

One thing that bothers me, though, is how Tsubaki seems to go through so little training. Black Star is training all the time but Tsubaki seems to just develop on the side (magically) to keep up with him - with the sole exception of eating her brother's soul. I suppose it could be due to her being of uber high potential to begin with but it would still be nice to see her actively developing like Soul is all the time.

Indeed, that made me laugh.

I wonder where Medusa is while all of this is going on and if she has any connections to this Noah guy.

That was a cute image of Tsubaki playing with Thunder, Fire, and Angela. I'd like to see more her doing more though, rather than just passing time.

I was disappointed when the death scythe appeared , i was hoping for some uber K-ON! - Soul Eater crossover there :P

Is anyone else sort of disapointed with Soul's "new" form? He looks just like the usual Soul, with minor changes. Not cool like Spirit, not at all.

The whole angel thing came out of nowhere, and i'm not sure if they should really be practicing flying right now when they don't have long range attacks ( well witch hunter did blast off once but that looked like an accident )
Then again it might give them more speed so who knows

Kid reorganizing the books contents... i loled xD
But it sucks seeing him our of action, i hope this situation doesn't keep up much longer, even if it does give the rest of the team time to reach his level of power

Were we ever shown what Spirit looked like before he became a Death Scythe? It's possible he was just naturally good looking.

I'm happy with the way they've done things. Eating a witch's soul didn't give you a sudden magical boost in fighting powers. Rather it unlocked paths to new abilities, but you still have to train and practice to use them.

It gives characters their power boost without feeling cheap.

As for Tsubaki, like Kraco said, she's had a huge potential increase since she absorbed her brother. The whole time after that Black Star was training so he could use her untapped ability.

They've implied they've reached that limit though, with Black Star unlocking all those different forms and modes, so hopefully we'll see Tsubaki finally having a reason to improve herself.

Some automatic powerups wouldn't be that bad, since compared to the rest of the team maka seems so lacking in power ( she and soul are supposed to be the main characters right?)

And why do you assume they've completely unlocked Tsubaki's abilities Bill? We haven't even seen them use soul resonance on those forms have we?

I assumed that because Black Star seems to have reached an agreement with the Stag (inner spirit of the sword. Forgot Never remembered his name).

You're right though in that it doesn't necessarily mean he's unlocked all of Tsubaki's current abilities.

It's just that before, Black Star's main problem was having his soul wavelength zapped by the sword. By the end of Arachne's arc, he was fine with keeping Tsubaki in Demon Blade mode and everything, so I assumed there were "zero problems".

Masamune i think ( as the legendary sword you know? )

It's likely that he has the capacity to use Tsubaki to 100% of her abilities right now, so all that's needed is training just Like Stein said

She has quite a unique attack power, though. We don't know if Black Star's new moves are anything but a big increase in power, but it seems to me like Maka's demon slayer is not only power but something inherently toxic to witches and other nasty folks. So, she might already possess a skill completely unparallelled by the others. Kid is of course is a highly unpredictable entity considering he's not even human but should be a monster like his old man, even if not yet as developed, so it's hard to compare him to Maka and Black Star.

Generally speaking Maka won't be acquiring melee skills comparable to Black Star any time soon simply because she's never training such things. And needless to say, those martial skills (and his questionable ninja skills) are a huge part of Black Star's power. Black Star and Maka won't ever grow any closer in this field, only further apart.

Keeping that in mind it also makes some sense that Maka and Soul aren't now training to achieve more attacks but patch their other lacking skills like mobility.

I'm glad Maka got rid of those cutesy angel wings for real wings. That Card-Captor-Sakura style flight style was good for nothing except looking cutesy.

So right now, that makes half of Spartoi highly mobile:

Fast: Kid, Kim, Maka

Foot: Black Star, Black-guy-with-fists, Ox

This fight offered little fun. It was nothing but Medusa testing attributes so it never would have had any sort of meaningful conclusion. The Clown was expected to lose right from the beginning.

The next fight, however, should be far more interesting. I doubt Black Star is going to end the fight with a friendship beam like Maka did in the past so it should either have a bloody end or something will interfere. I doubt Crona will die so I suppose Medusa will withdraw her at some point. Once the experiment is over. But it should be entertaining until then.

Seems like Crona has been subjected to a complete mind wipe. Forgetting all about Maka would require nothing less, for sure. Medusa is one nasty mama.

Somehow I don't find this fight too exciting. Hard to explain why. Maybe it's because Black Star was fated to win it and maybe because Crona is such a sad character that I don't really enjoy seeing her fight any Shibusen folks. There are real villains out there and seeing them put up a good fight or get beaten is far more interesting and satisfying.

I did enjoy Black Star's joke and Tsubaki's unimpressed response, though.

- - - - -

Kind of a jumpy chapter, covering almost everybody and thus covering them only briefly. Little got concluded, though. Medusa escaped, Crona escaped. At least the frog witch got caught by Black Star. Although I've no idea if that dude can actually guard and detain a prisoner even for a moment. I hope he can or we will be left with nothing concrete at all after this arc. Especially with Soul and Maka only talking about the grand and highly important matter of love partnering letters. As if those two would ever be separated.

That certainly doesn't make this any better for me seeing how the Black Star-Tsubaki pair is my favorite. Now it'd be yaoi...

I'm not liking the setting that much either. It feels quite cheap and the sins are hardly used at all beyond a very superficial effect. I guess what's happening to Maka right now is a bit deeper but it's still so cliched and not really dependent on the book if you think about it. So, I can't help but feel this is more or less wasted time.

Soul Eater used to be one of my favorite manga but the monthly schedule and these chapters are really hurting it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bah, hax victories...

Kraco
Tue, 08-24-2010, 04:33 AM
I didn't actually mind it that much. In fact it seemed somewhat fitting. Maka was never depicted as a fighter of infinite potential in my opinion (unlike Black Star, for example, or Kid due to his heritage), although she has the special attributes to greatly enhance her practical level of power against most opponents, even truly dangerous ones. However, what I found reasonable is that once those special attributes were proven ineffective, she was only good, but not amazing as one should have been against somebody with 800 years worth of bloodlust and skills.

So, this was far better, no matter how funnily flat it fell in a certain sense, than Maka powering up and beating him - which in my opinion would have rather meant he wasn't that great to begin with. Now he could be considered a real mofo who was defeated by himself and back luck, not by anybody weaker.

Honestly I'm far more looking forward to the other fight. The last time we saw Black Star and Kid fight was during Black Star's slump. Now the roles are probably reversed. Even though Black Star was shown with the White Star eyes, I doubt he will fall there again, not at this point when he's practically the most powerful he has ever been, with or without Tsubaki, and he has a pretty clear path in front of him. And a couple of recent victories against tough opponents to back up his self-confidence, no less.

Archangel
Tue, 08-24-2010, 04:57 AM
What felt wrong about it was that this isn't the first time Maka wins because of luck or because her skills just happened to bea perfect match against her opponent.

Not only that, she didn't even use all her trump cards like flying or the black blood

Kraco
Tue, 08-24-2010, 08:47 AM
I'm not sure what good flying would have done considering they are inside the book, which might equal to being inside limited space. I was also thinking of the black blood during the combat but I doubt it would have mattered in the end, especially since she can't use it as effectively as Crona.

I have to admit that it was a bit annoying she was already giving up and then won simply out of luck. It would have been far more stylish if she had been ready to fight till the end, despite not having a chance, and then get saved by sheer luck. Even more stupid was how she actually tried to tell Giriko to stop fighting in order to save himself instead of coaxing him to proceed and thus doom himself.

The old folks got their asses kicked far too easily. It'll end up ridiculous if the Spartoi now wipes the floor with Noah & co. They aren't that tough yet, surely. Just before the operation Stein still managed to beat Black Star, yet now he just stood wondering while everybody and their teddy bears got maimed.

Despite that complaint, I really felt like this story is getting back on track with this chapter. I disliked the trip inside the book stuff greatly.

What's holding them back from madness while using the power of it? Kid and Black Star seemed to be in fine control of themselves and simply wanted Maka to give them a power boost with Chain Resonance. It doesn't quite make sense for this infective Madness that they've been trying to eliminate for so long to be an actually harnessed power.

It'd make more sense if they were constantly being held back from madness takeover by having Maka and Soul keep it on a leash via Chain Resonance instead - Claymore style.

Archangel

I never expected Soul Eater to make much sense in the beginning so i certainly won't expect it to remain coherent now that it's popular

What i would give a right arm for though is more plot and character development in between all the badassery. It would also be nice if Maka could stop sucking, but i won't ask for too much.

Kraco
Wed, 11-17-2010, 03:31 AM
The way I see the harnessing madness power issue is that since they did beat the formless madness entity inside the book by claiming control over themselves and their desires, they also gained some power over the effects of madness itself. So, they can let a little madness in and focus it as killing intent, like Kid said, yet lose nothing else (at least permanently).

To be honest, this felt more like Soul Eater than the real chapters have for a while now.

I've always thought it an entertaining, if quite cheap, dramatic method to have some fresh newbie view the older main characters as advanced fighters. Since we have seen those people from the beginning when they weren't much more than these people, it will have some impact. Well... Maybe they weren't this noob ever. They had quite extraordinary circumstances, I suppose. Most of them.

Really puts things in perspective doesn't it? You can diss Maka for doing poorly in most of her fights but these regular Joes have trouble with just basic procedures while she held her own against world class monsters.

When they talked about minding the witch, I thought how can somebody fear Kim, but then came the mafia scene and I was reminded of her money hungry disposition. I guess that's something to fear, har har.

This actually made me wonder where the old heroes are living. Soul and Maka's apartment always made me think of simply some flat downtown, not a dormitory. No idea about Black Star and Tsubaki, though. I don't think we have even seen their apartment more than a couple of times and only with cursory glimpses. Kid, of course, has his own fricking mansion. Maka and Soul might have had the financial backing to get their own place. Black Star and Tsubaki might not have such luxury, especially Black Star who had his whole past erased away except for ghastly rumours.

But then again, I never really paid attention or thought about it more deeply.

I'm curious as how this part of the story stands in the timeline, Kim has already been revealed as a witch but these new students don't seem to be much worried on the impending menace from the spreading madness around the world

Maybe they're just naive or maybe the whole thing was kept under wraps ( unlikely though, the demon god destroyed half the city in his undies )

Ryllharu
Mon, 02-21-2011, 07:39 PM
They call Kim a witch but I think they mean "witch" not an actual witch.

From chapter one, Medusa is still employed as the nurse, Sid is not a zombie, BlackStar is missing a scar or two, etc. I know I haven't been keeping up with the main series, but unless I'm missing a lot, Soul Eater Not! takes place before the main storyline even begins.

Kraco

A good point. I completely forgot Medusa was mentioned, which established the timeline.

So, they call Kim a witch simply because she's eager to ask for money? That's bullying!

that's not only harsh, it's suicidal. using 'witch' as an offensive slur for someone who is greedy creates a stereotype that witches have a special connection with money and wealth, and might lead some idiot kid to the impression that he can buy off his life from a witch using cash offerings.
or even worse, a witch could use that stereotype and create a situation where she's supposedly doing business (for money) with a meister (technician), and he thinks that she's in this for the money. while in truth, she couldn't care less about it, and is using the connection for some other stuff.

speaking of the chapter... t'was kinda dumb/

Not such an exciting chapter but not bad either. It's kind of entertaining to watch anew Ox trying to woo Kim in vain. Of course we now, in retrospect, know already why Kim tried to keep people farther away than an arm's length. It would be almost sad if anything in this series could be sad. But since everything needs to be either cool or big, there's no room for sadness.

Hmm... Seems like Not! also has some sort of a bigger plot with the Traitors - whoever or whatever they are. The actual series feels like it lost some of its original atmosphere and dynamics the deeper the greater story developed and so I hope this spinoff won't try to reach too far.

Other than that, I'm still liking the regular appearances of the old characters in this series.

Ryllharu
Sat, 05-14-2011, 03:30 PM
Jacqueline, as in Jack o' Lantern (O'Lantern is in fact her middle name) is sure enough Kim's partner in the main series, though this seems to take place before Jackie knew Kim was a witch, or they were even partners. I guess that explains why Kim has short hair in NOT, because it hasn't grown out yet to begin with.

It's been a long time since anyone called Jackie by her real name.

Maybe we will get to see how Jackie found out Kim's secret. Although that should be a bit beyond the scope of this series unless it just happens in the background of the things going on around the three main girls.

[21:41] <Kraco> Yes, it was actually quite good. Kind of reminded me of the good old days.
[21:41] <Archie> Told yah
[21:41] <Archie> Wasn't the simbolism great?
[21:41] <Archie> How Krona simplified the act of killing in her mind
[21:41] <Kraco> It was a bit predictable. But yes, it worked.
[21:42] <Archie> Also Eibon, out of nowhere
[21:42] <Archie> Medusa dying again
[21:44] <Kraco> I personally feel Medusa shouldn't have acted so much. If Crona was nearly complete, she should have attacked nevertheless.
[21:44] <Archie> That was the point though
[21:45] <Archie> Crona doesn't evolve on her own
[21:45] <Archie> She doesn't want to, change scares her
[21:45] <Archie> Everything does
[21:45] <Archie> Medusa has to be the one to move her in the right direction
[21:45] <Archie> And this was the final stroke
[21:47] <Kraco> Hmm... That doesn't seem very complete. But I guess you do have a point. If she was only an incubator for the black blood to begin with, never more.
[21:48] <Archie> I'm curious as to how she'll develop now
[21:48] <Archie> Id she doesn't depend on anyone anymore she'll act on her own will
[21:48] <Archie> What that will is, i have no effing idea
[21:48] <Archie> There's also the possibility of Medusa being faking this whole thing again and keep manipulating her from the shadows
[21:49] <Archie> That would be boring though
[21:49] <Archie> Predictable
[21:49] <Kraco> She will either follow the madness or do nothing. People don't change so suddenly.
[21:49] <Archie> That's the thing, it's not a change
[21:49] <Archie> She did what she was told
[21:49] <Archie> Always
[21:49] <Archie> And now there's nobody left to tell her what to do
[21:50] <Archie> So what we see from now on should be the real Crona
[21:50] <Kraco> Medusa's death could go either way, but I'm disinclined to think she would off herself for good.
[21:50] <Archie> I wouldn't know
[21:50] <Archie> Her motives were neer properly disclosed
[21:50] <Archie> For all i know this was her objective all along
[21:51] <Kraco> Crona has no desires of her own, so what would she do? Perhaps go after Maka?
[21:51] <Archie> Who knows
[21:52] <Archie> Maybe she'll find herself missing Maka and will move to off her for good
[21:52] <Kraco> It's not like becoming "complete" would suddenly spawn grand plans and ambitions in her mind.
[21:52] <Archie> Well not at first
[21:52] <Archie> But she's basically back in that dark room all over again
[21:52] <Archie> In her own mind
[21:52] <Kraco> Maka is something she knows, so attempting to kill her would be plausible indeed.

Kraco and I had a little back and forth on this one

Hmm... I'm not sure I like this unless the auhor is planning something quite different from its outward looks. Black Star was special by being the last of the wiped out clan so it's no good if this dude just happens to be from the same stock. From his ramblings I first thought Star Clan was an offshoot of his family (dojo), but then why would he have the star? Or were they the original owners of the star, and later Star Clan made the star infamous, kind of like nazis ruined the old swastika symbol.

Either way, Star Clan were more badass than these guys. No doubt about that.

It's hard for me to get past their similarity in appearance and personality to a certain two K-ON characters. That's why I like Anya so much better, but now she's being pushed to the side quite a bit. She's not even paired with Tsugumi anymore. :/

I also hope they get into how Kim and Jackie became so close, enough for the (currently) straight-laced Kim to accept that she's best friends with a witch.

I just have no idea where this spin-off is going anymore.

Archangel
Sun, 07-03-2011, 01:19 PM
I don't think it's meant to go anywhere, not yet anyway. The author is just experimenting with new possibilities, seeing how the readers react to the new characters and will probably act upon those results.

It may happen that NOT ends in a segment where the characters in it are introduced in the original manga.

When I read this chapter I felt like the story progress and the dialogue were jumpy and unnatural. I was glad to see Black Star and Tsubaki, but that's about it. Where did this whole sky whale mission come from anyway? The last we saw of Maka and Soul was when they were informed of Chrona's movements - and now we get some whale floating in the sky..? They also talked about the prey as if we should have known what it's all about.

Kim certainly was cruel, and it's not like that personality had still altogether vanished. I suppose it would also make sense that despite the regeneration magic oppositing the sway of magic, it still can't 100% nullify it. I don't think she would be like this if her intentions were purely to keep everybody at a distance and herself in the shadows and out of scrutiny. She's a witch for sure.

I'm pleased Not! is showing us the rough beginning of the Kim-Jacqueline pair. To be honest, I find that more interesting than the actual main characters of this story.
