Well, they're different "standards" to start out with, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

In practical terms, DVD-R is a standard which is compatible with a lot more devices than is DVD+R. I've experienced a lot of read problems with +R on standalone DVD players and older regular computer DVD-ROM (i.e. non-recording) drives. If you intend to burn DVD's that will be readable by the Xbox or Playstation 2 consoles, you should be using DVD-R.

For me, if I'm archiving, I prefer -R for the greatest chance of having data be readable wherever I may take the disc.

If I'm burning temp stuff for my own use (rotating backups, temporary "scratch" space, test burns, etc) I prefer +RW over -RW.
