technically avi files are mpeg video streams. It's just that it's mpeg4. Your dvd player only understands mpeg2 and probably mpeg1.
nero can burn vcds, which are mpeg1. It's also got a plugin for svcd's (mpeg2). TMpeg can do both last I knew. If you're trying to play on your dvd player, you're probably looking for vcd or svcd.
If your dvd player supports divx, you can use divx5 and virtualdub and reencode stuff that way (or change fourcc's if its xvid and hope the encoder didn't use qpel and gmc), but I don't recommend that approach if you don't know what you're doing, as it's time consuming and annoying (more than making vcd's or svcds even).
Your best bet is to get a tv-out video card and a long enough cable to reach from your computer to your tv though. That gives you the ultimate flexibility :-D

Here's another way you can do it.
Get Adobe Preimere 6.5 from Kazaa or something and install it. You can convert .avi to mepg. But i've been having problems lately and I can't convert the avi files that has xvid.. it freezes up my adobe. It does the ones with divx though.
