Well..at first I thought Akamaru looked kind of similar to a Jack Russle Terrier, but ears are different and such.... I think Akamaru is just a random dog Kishimoto-san drew while making Naruto, probably didn't have a specific dog in mind...

yea...it's not like they have to draw a dog from a real photo or anything like that...

I think if anything, Kishimoto was trying to make a kawaii version of the dog god... I know at Naruto Info this is the information about kiba and inuzuka clan and the relation between dogs and the real clan in the past.. there is a picture of the dog god : Statue Image (http://www.miksovsky.com/Japan/1999-10/Stone%20Dog.jpg) and kind of reminds me of Akamaru, since it has flat ears like Akamaru
