Can Gai use Nin- or Gen-jutsu?

there's no reason why he can't use it
it IS very rare after all for a ninja to be incapable of molding chakra

And one more thing is Summoning a nin-jutsu move?

yeah im pretty sure he can use it......he just prefers not to......
but proof that he CAN use it, is just as you pointed out....the summoning no jutsu.....
he DID summon that turtle, after all

i myself, would consider summoning no jutsu to be a ninjutsu

I'm sure he can. He's summoned his big turtle before. And he 'Kai'!! Against the sleeping genjetsu.
But I think he's most probably the Taijitsu specialist of the village.

This is an interesting observation that relates to a *possible* minor plothole. It seems that you are required to perform certain ninjutsu techniques in order to achieve Genin status (like the bunshin test that Naruto was so bad at heheh) .. but yet Rock Lee, who supposedly is unable to perform nin/genjutsu .. is a Genin.

My only guess is that exceptions are made for exceptional students i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif

And I would believe that Gai is capable of low to mid-level nin/genjutsu, but because he is so much more powerful with taijutsu, he sticks with his forte.

He definnately can. but he is the village's Taijutsu master. So his Ninjutsu is no where near that of kakashi, and his Genjutsu most likely isnt that of Kurenei.

it was so funny how when kurenai's genjutsu is suppose to be so good it just get owned by itachi. ahahahaa. she was like "wtf mate^^"

gai obviously was molding chakra when he was able to stand on top of the water in ep 82 also.......
which makes me wonder.......does that mean lee would never be able to walk on water or stand upside down on a ceiling? if they ever show him doing that...im gonna have to call kishimoto on that inconsistancy

i think it was explained that an exception was made for lee after gai took him under his wing; also lee can use nin and gen jutsu, but he really really sucks at it. Also, i see no reason why gai isnt a competent ninjutsu user, if he can do kuchioyse...i mean that isn't exactly something easy to pull off... then hes probably fairly adept at ninjitsu

well, you cant say lee can use nin and genjutsu, if he has never successfully performed henge or bunshin before (and they show flashbacks of him trying to do so in the manga but failing every time)

Lee could mold chakra.... remember in episode 20 something, when Naruto and gang was walking to register, Sasuke and Chunnin kid had a "fight" and rock lee caught both of their feet. and sasuke said "theres chakra in his arms" or something like that. TW subs...

There's two possible explanations for that, Jing. First is that Sasuke misinterpreted Lee's monstrous strength to be Chakra. Remember, he underestimated Lee in their fight by assuming his moves were Genjutsu or Ninjutsu. The other is that he can use chakra, but he cannot mold it to perform Jutsus. It's obvious he HAS Chakra- there's no other explanation for the explosion of Chakra that occurs when he opens the later gates. I think it's more that he has no Chakra Control whatsoever.

I agree. Lee seems to be able to improve his taijutsu overall, by maybe applying chakra into his punches and kicks, as well as specials. However, he can't concentrate it to a single point, in order to perform nin and genjutsus.

As for Gai, yeah I think he can.

Yeah, I know, im just saying that Lee could transfer chakra to his arms and stuff but isn't really good at using ninjutsu.

Gai can use all sorts of jutsus if he wanted.

Gai's ninjutsu and genjutsu are probably just at a much lower level than his taijutsu, that's why he only teaches and uses taijutsu for the most part.

You should stick to what your good at IMO, if Gai isnt good at the other two fighting styles in Ninjaism, then he should stick with taijutsu

Who says Gai's not good at nin- and genjutsu? I'll bet he's just awesome with all three methods! I mean, this is GAI after all. He's simply great!

Is Rock Lee incapable of using Nin and Gens? I thought he was just really really bad at it. I was thinking that he and Gai were similar in that they were both flunk outs for the same thing. But if Gai can use Gen and Ninjutsus will there be hope for rock lee?

A quick look at the official naruto character data book answers the question in that Gai is proficient in both nin and genjutsu as well as tai. Assigning arbitrary numbers based from the graphical image his tai is maxed out at 5 and his nin and gen are both at 3, which is mediocre for a jounin but excellent for say a genin.

Lee on the otherhand has 0 ratings for both nin and gen, but a 4 rating for tai.

Lee can mold and control chakra, he just can't mold and control it outside of his body.
Gai must be able to mold and control it outside of his body if he can walk on water.
