Orange-haired samurais

Well, after watching Rurouni Kenshin and Peace Maker Kurogane and noticing how the two main characters have orange hair, I can't help but wonder if there is a reason for this. Is orange hair supposed to symbolize anything in Japanese culture?

Don't they have red hair? I think it's because it makes the characters look cooler.
