Weird japanese with their last names first and their first names last. I could never get used to that. I don't remember his full name ever being mentioned. Everyone calls him Hokage-sama, Sandaime, or Sarutobi-sensei. http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/dry.gif

i am pretty sure it is his first name same way naruto and team call hatake kakashi by kakashi.
sarutobi has some pun on monkey b/c saru means monkey.
yeha i think orochimaru calls him by his first name since the 3rd did teach orochimaru.

It means he's the third hokage.
i.e. san=three
Just like the 4th hokage was called yondaime.
Its a japanese thing.

Family name of one of the legendary Sanada 10 Hero Shinobis. He was an actual historical figure. His maiden name was Sasuke.

Actually it was 'the professor' due to his immense knowledge of the ninja fighting arts.
Attention mods: this topic should probably be moved to the open section as its getting pretty close to spoiler country.

Another thing! When oro pulled out the mask and revealed himself, he also turned his own hands into white. You know, from human color to "Oro white" whitout even touching them. That pisses me off. HOW da? HOW DA???

̣kay ill explain Sarutobi is his family name but you say the family name first in japan. so his name is Sarutobi Sandaime(dont know first name replaced with sandaime) but if he was to move to America his name would become Sandaime Sarutobi. and mostly you call everybody by their family name in japan like Uzumaki-kun for naruto. they also do this in most animes that is set in japan. but in naruto they almost only use their first name. i think mostly since many ppl got the same last name like hinata and neji. asuma and sandaime and konohamaru.

I'm guite sure that "Sarutobi" is Hokage-sama's first or last name. Well, I can't be 100% sure, but it would be logical.

Hmm its most likely the first name, or last since it uses the greeting of san in his words. Usualy people just call him hokage-sama
