Perhaps a clarification would be helpful.

You are familiar with the difference between Japanese and Western feature animation techniques, perhaps?

The Japanese language structure allows the animation studio to first produce the cels of the show and time them to an arbitrary script; the seiyuu time their voices to match that script.

Western features typically run in reverse order, first recording the audio track (some technical phonic issues come into play as to why they do this, primarily deals with accents and such), then sending that to the animation studio, where the cels are crafted to fit with that timing.

When a Japanese Animation is imported, that sort of cel-crafting is simply not in the budget -- so the script is altered, and the voice actors are told to attempt to fit their lines to the visuals. This is really quite difficult, and only a very few people are truly good at it (the ever-famous Wendee Lee and David Lucas come to mind).

Despite this, there are some dubs I enjoy. CB, of course, but also some portions of Hellsing, and Read or Die (look for the Day The Earth Stood Still reference&#33;).

in my experience there&#39;s only one Anime where I prefer the dubbed version over the subbed, and that&#39;s Cowboy Bebop, the voice acting is well done, and the englishes voices just seem to fit. There are other animes out there where the dub is okay, such as spirited away, but in general it seems a rule that Anime is better when subbed. I think it&#39;s just a cultural thing, for some reason Bebop just seems to fit in English, but something like Naruto would just feel weird in anything other then Japanese, especially since they&#39;re surrounded by Japanese culture in the anime. If fans want to try and dub Naruto, whatever, it&#39;ll be fun for them and give us a good laugh, but I doubt even &quot;professional&quot; voice actors could do a decent dub of Naruto. It&#39;s like in Trigun how they pronounce Vash&#39;s name as if it rhymed with Bash instead of Wash, that just pissed me off, it&#39;s like calling a Jalapeno a JahLapeeno. Well, actully, I didn&#39;t find Sakura and Ino that vexing. The voice they got for Sakura actually fit the &quot;I&#39;m a cute girl&#33;&quot; act, and Ino... well, just sounded normal.

That definitely was one of the worst dubs I&#39;ve ever heard, although I admire people willing to put that much time into a great series.

I disagree with some of you here who think that english dubbing anime is always a bad idea. Sometimes I prefer not to read the subtitles if the dub is good enough. Also, the majority of my friends (not as much into anime as I) prefer the dubs. I think the dubs help open up a lot more people to anime.

Ghost in the Shell is not the best movie to judge your opinions of English voice actors on. The dialogue was dry, forced, and gratuitous.

Of course, if you were to go by sheer volume of dubs, over 75% of them could probably be lumped in this category.

there are some dubs that have been quite good - Evangelion in my opinion did an excellent job of dubbing - not only grammar and time/motion management of speaking wise but also just the voice-acting in general

there are a lot of factors in dubbing that have a tendency of going wrong - but you also need to consider this.

everything we are used to we tend to not want to change - while yes some dubbing is just horribly bad - passing judgements on others is not the greatest thing to do

in general i would have to agree taht dubbing can be a bit of a pain - but when you are accustomed to looking at the bottom of thep icture it can be interesting to see what things in the background you might miss - unless you are mad obsessed and watch naruto 30 times a day and frame by frame you aren&#39;t going to catch absolutely everything (im not saying thats a bad thing im just saying most people dont)
