i formatted my computer a few days ago, and now i cant seem to play movies in media player

i burned all my movies/anime before i formatted and i even checked to make sure it was fine.....it worked alrite before. but now it just doesn't play

its not even giving me some missing codec msg or anyhting, and i've installed like 7 diff codecs. when i open a movie, it loads, but all i get is a blank screen, and no sound. it doesn't even "play" (by that i mean, the time doesn't increase, it just stays in one place)

anyone have ANY idea whats wrong? or mayb knows how i could fix this?

ps: if i download small clips off the internet, they seem to work fine......i haven't downloaded a full movie or anyhting yet, but im assuming it would b the same

Edit: i forgot to mention, music videos that i burned and then transfered back onto my computer seem to work fine as well

I sometimes also have problems with windowmediaplayer so i use Zoomplayer.... it works great and it has a much bigger timeslider so you can more easely find where you leftoff.

This is just a longshot, but try burning a file that won't work to cd, then try running it from the cd. If that doesn't work, try playing it from the cd on a different computer. If it works on the other pc, you'll know it's your pc with the problem, but if it doesn't work then it might be the files that are corrupted or something.

Or, if you can be buggered, you could try reformatting again.

What player are you using? And make sure it is set to play those file types.

4) Bring up the command prompt. Click and drag the file into the command prompt. What .extension does the command prompt say the file has?

If the file appears to be an actual .avi file and should work. Then i have more questions:

1) again, what does G-Spot say about the file?
2) What do both drop down menu&#39;s state when you open it in AviC?
3) What version of WMP do you have installed? Is it WMP7 or 9?
4) Have you tried to copy and paste the anime file to your HardDrive and tried to play it from your HardDrive instead of the DVD/CD? </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'>
ok, well media player doesnt&#39; say anything...its opens the file fine, but the file just doesn&#39;t play. i have noe idea what G-spot is. i checked in command prompt, the files are avi....actually the one i copy/pasted from the cd was &quot;flename.avi.avi&quot;.....i dunno if that means anyhting or not......

anyway, its not the files, cuz before i formatted, i checked the cds and played the files from cd and they worked fine.....besides that, i also downloaded files from kazaa (naruto ep 31) and its the same thin.....all i get is a black screen.

i opened AviC, and the 2 drop down menus were diffenent (i think one was xvid and the other was divx) but i changed that, and still nothign happened......and im using media player 9 i believe.

im pretty sure its just my computer.....im worried it has somethign to do with my video card or drivers. it plays mpg&#39;s i think.....and some files it wotn play using mplayer2 but it&#39;ll play using the normal media player.

In the AviC thing change them so they match. Either DivX or Xvid... thing is i don&#39;t know which one it should be using so you&#39;re going to have to switch between the two.

But before that... important thing to do.

Your file should only have one extension. .avi and not .avi.avi
This means none of the files will run straight off your DVD/CD because the extensions are all screwed up. And unless it&#39;s a DVD re-writer you&#39;re using with a rewritable DVD you can&#39;t change that.

So try copying and pasting one of the files to your HardDrive, then opening the command prompt and type in &quot;Rename &quot; without the speech marks, but with the space at the end. Then drag the file into the command prompt and type some random name in with just one extension. EG: anything.avi
Then press return. Then rename the file in windows to whatever it should say, but DO NOT put .avi on the end of it. Ok, now play the file. If it dosn&#39;t play, open AviC and switch it to the other codec (if it&#39;s on DivX by default, switch both to Xvid. If it&#39;s Xvid by default then switch them both to DivX.).

Gspot is a codec application. It has a database of codecs and it diagnoses your files and tells you if you have a codec problem. It can be downloaded Here ('http://www.headbands.com/gspot/').

After you burn a file on cd-r or dvd, check to see if it plays, then if it does, delete it.

ok i&#39;ve tried all avaible codecs with the AviC but still nothing.....and the double extension thing was just one file, but the rest of my files are still messing up.

this is what gspot says:

i reinstalled the drivers for my video card as well, and reinstalled mediaplayer 9, but nothign seems to help http://www.gotwoot.net/forum/html/emoticons/mad.gif.....god damn cmoputer

You might have to try formatting again. And remember, there <u>is</u> such a thing as having too many codecs installed.

I really hope this isnt a stupid question but did you install all the right codecs like Divx 5.1 and Xvid??

Oh man i have a seriously bad feeling about this one.

Check the DVD/CD you burned the episodes to. How much space is taken on the CD/DVD?

Even if it says all the space is completely taken up i still have a very bad feeling on this one.

I suspect... that what you copied to that DVD or whatever, wasn&#39;t the episode itself. But more of a shortcut to that episode on your HardDrive. Now you&#39;ve formatted the episodes are no longer on the HardDrive and the shortcuts on the DVD/CD are looking for files on your HardDrive which are no longer there.

Well i could be wrong, and i hope i am for sure. To make sure, i have a few questions.

1) What does MediaPlayer say when you try to play the file and it fails?
2) What does G-Spot say about the file?
3) Right click and go to the properties of the file. Does it have a &quot;find target&quot; button? And what does it say about the file in the summer? What size is the file?
4) Bring up the command prompt. Click and drag the file into the command prompt. What .extension does the command prompt say the file has?

One of the video files that you&#39;re having trouble with, I mean.

Also, have you tried using:

MP 9

MP 6.4 (you can use it by typing &quot;mplayer2&quot; without the quotes into the RUN section of your startbar)

Classic MP

hm... weird... did you install a codec pack? I never trust codec packs. Just install WMP9 codecs and the DivX and Xvid and try it from there. Don&#39;t install any other codecs. Oh and make sure the files are configured with the AviC to DivX codec and not the Xvid codec.

Yes, for sure, some codecs cancel out others and create a big sloppy mess of a whole bunch of shit. carefull with codec selction
