It's like a director was told to make a show and 'do it like Trigger'... who then delegated his assistant do it instead... and pay for it out of pocket. A hollow imitation, indeed. While the totalitarian oppression is not uncommon in otaku-culture worshipping anime, seldom is such a shaky reasoning given to the protagonist cast. "A world where we can love what we want" sounds good so long as the serial killers, arsonists, and drug addicts don't get word. 'Protecting' otakus from their own culture would probably have a significantly positive effect on the declining Japanese birth rate, if nothing else- very forward thinking!

Okay, enough bashing on the poor otakus. Mahou is super madcap, haughty, and... bland, so far. This setup of trying to win Japan back from big brother has been done to death so many times, and this episode itself was as plain as 'we can't pull off our mission unless the leader decides we can' that I can't get invested in anything yet. I want to like this, but there's not much to work with, expect maybe Jolyne's and Power's VA playing a homunculus of those characters again in a different show.
