View Full Version : Off-Topic: Maybe a Gotwoot-Discord would be a good idea?

Hey,

with subscriptions forever closed, it's only a time before member count will reach critical mass. Before that happens, I think it'd be great to have an alternate place where discussion could proceed if worse comes to worst.

The most simple solution would be a discord-channel. It's easily created and we don't have to use it for as long as the forum is running, just have joined the discord in case the forum becomes unavailable.

Dunno if you guys would be interested in this. Just randomly thought about the future :>

I actually made one back when I thought the forums had closed down, in case anyone did a search for GotWoot.

It's still up. I don't really want to moderate it or anything though...if any of our moderators wants to join and...tell me how to give them admin powers, I'd be down with that.

Moderation time is the critical asset regardless of the medium.
And discord isn't any better than other media.

I mean...there's only, like, 10 of us at this point. I don't think moderation comes up a whole lot anymore.

I've seen this transference MFauli suggests work with other Forums I used to frequent. The forums were dying and they made a Discord. And while you didn't really get any NEW people, the Discord is still active, moreso than the forums were at the end. Due to it being tied into Discord, rather than a separate site they have to consciously visit.

It does work. Or at least, I've seen it work twice already.

My point was that opening needs more moderation time. Discord is fully open and needs moderation time.
Just one thing to consider.

Just for the record, I have a discord channel with plenty of people (although only like 2-3 are active, sometimes lol) and I never cared about moderation. With our small community, I think it'd be even less of an issue. Not like someone's gonna spam swastikas or go on an n-word parade, lol (...although, maybe Kray .... ^^).

Depending on your ISP, IRC is still faster than torrents, with much lower risk for us Americans.

I appreciate IRC, but when all the people I used to be with in IRC switched to discord, it became kinda obsolete.

How "independent" is IRC? Like, if discord is down, it's down. IRC isn't a a central system like discord, is it? So that might be an advantage still.

irc is an open protocol that has been usee for ages. You can install it on any plateform provided someone wishes to compile to sources.
It is available for most server OSes and you find a multitude of clients.
