Lloyd is a novice adventurer whose dream is to discover “true strength” in the capital he's always admired, despite growing up with neighbors who always considered him weak. He departs his hometown, which just so happens to be located right next to one of the most dangerous dungeons in the world. Lloyd may think of himself as powerless, but when he goes to the city that serves as the starter town for adventurers, the difference between him and everyone else couldn't be starker.

I have read a couple of volumes of the light novel for Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town (Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari), I think it sucks overall. That said, I think it could work very well as an anime, particularly if it can approximate something of what Konosuba brought while it plays up the adult aspect of the comedy instead of the more childish ones. Hopefully the action sequences are well animated.

First episode is out, will try it later.

...are a bunch of these characters named after vitamins?

Well, watched the first episode. Rushed (but may recover after first episode introductions), not funny as of yet, animation is OK-ish from what can be expected. But overall, was entertained more than I thought I would be. Well, not really entertained, just something easy to waste time on while my brain is resting. A lot of the jokes in the LN work because of the narrator, but hopefully they can be better incorporated as the series goes on. Not that I care much about it anyways.

"* Based on a comedic fantasy light novel series written by Satou Toshio and illustrated by Watanuki Nao.

Optimistic young Lloyd would like nothing more than to achieve his life's dream of becoming a soldier in the capital. Unfortunately, his neighbors and friends consider him the weakest boy in the village and are sure Lloyd will meet his doom the minute he sets out on his foolhardy journey. But no one realizes that by living near the most dangerous dungeon in the land, what the locals consider to be everyday annoyances would be apocalyptic for anybody else! And when Lloyd defies the townspeople and makes off for a starter town for adventurers, the rest of the kingdom is about to find out just how overpowered Lloyd really is!"

As the world turns, so another Isekai anime is birthed... This one, while not particularly ambitious, does have a... strange energy it its production. The soft (low budget if you're feeling unkind) animation style contrasts nicely with the punchlines of Lloyd not knowing how overpowered he is. It's easy to watch, and features your usual assortment of overdesigned (visually) female characters grouped up for fluffy adventure where tension is essentially theoretical at this point. I enjoyed the first batch of episodes far more than its closest cousin, texture wise - the smartphone isekai from a few years back.

The voice actress on the witch really gets into her exclamations of shock. :p

I thought the first three episodes have been pretty funny overall.

The jokes land for me and they're poking at the isekai tropes pretty much constantly.

Seriously. I hope she got hazard pay for having to do screeching takes all day.

I'm enjoying this more animated, but the jokes are better executed in the LN in my opinion, but yeah... it's been better than what I was expecting entertainment wise.

It's no Non Non Biyori (few things can ever meet that bar), but it does make me laugh or at least smile and passed the 3 episode test.

Episode 4 is out...

In general, I hope not all the fights are this anti-climatic, even if it serves a comedic angle. For example, when Lloyd was blocking attacks from Merthophan, there were a couple of shots that looked very awesome animated, so hope to see more of that at least.

Some of the jokes hit home, but this really is just about as milk toast as fantasy adventure get at this point (I had to remind myself this wasn't an isekai), where almost all other actors of the fantasty world exist to facilitate the power fantasy, and my interest is dropping fast, but the jokes alone are giving me hope...

Jokes should get better as we go along I reckon, but we'll see.

Now we see some suspicion about the "big brother", if he's a bad guy, I'd hope they would be more subtle about it. Seems to early to throw some suspicion his way.

I forgot all about big bro seeming devious. This show could use some tension, so I welcome it, but am afraid it's all one big misdirect.

Yeah, this series is like "What if One Punch Man, but without the good genre deconstruction."

Eh?

It deconstructs or subverts almost every situation in the genre.

You could argue OPM is "better" because it is more dry about it, but Mob Psycho was better than OPM about that. This is nonstop parody of adventure series, fantasy, and even isekai tropes.

I have my doubts that it won't start recycling and get stale, but so far so good.

Could be a red-herring as you say, but given the look grandma gave and how he split once he heard she was coming increases the chances of him being involved in something... maybe not a bad guy, but doing things not approved by their village.

Is it possible that Lloyd is actually strong even within Kunlun? Like everyone else just leaves the village at some point while he stayed there until now, leveling up against the stronger monsters there?

Could be, but I think he still has compared himself to others in the village that do actual feats better than him... assuming it's not all anecdotal to him, that he has actually witnessed these things.

Those aren't the same thing. This show subverts (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SubvertedTrope) it's genre. But simply doing the opposite of what the genre would normally do is not a deconstruction (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Deconstruction).

I like how they've given up trying to convince him he's strong and now just resort to tricking him into being the hero.

I like Phyllo, though not sure about how they're dressing... seem too modern.

And yeah, I like the tricking him aspect, but at the same time protecting him from himself, meaning... protecting others from him.

Cockroach girl is getting cuter by the yandere-second.

I'm enjoying the one non-harem girl's story so far.

Interesting that other people's attacks can harm him- he just has regeneration and a high pain tolerance.

What an odd tone shift to the new character (2nd year) to show up for the inconsequential 'practice fight', get clowned, and then also stop by wizard girl just to get yuri-jealous and downtrodden just in time to be presumably manipulated by the 'other' kid from the super village... all in one episode. I thought I zoned out during some connecting scenes, but nope; straight shift to force this story beat. Curious...

I mean, she is right to be jealous. Her crush is CLEARLY crushing on Lloyd.

I must have missed or dismissed something... why cockroach?

I'm enjoying the one non-harem girl's story so far.

Who is the non-harem one? The mercenary Riho? Well, she did accept the "date", but at least not jaded like the rest. And yeah, from all the ones we've seen, her background is the most of interesting so far for me.

Interesting that other people's attacks can harm him- he just has regeneration and a high pain tolerance.

Have we seen him take a hit before? Don't recall if he took a hit from Merthophan or if he blocked them all. Didn't seem to get hurt back then, and Merthophan was more than the other characters could handle, so maybe it's just that this is girl is insanely strong too? Would like to go back and see the Merthophan fight to see if anything catches my eye.

Yeah, they arrived from nowhere as well... quite jarring when we haven't seen any interaction with them prior to this. Was the context that they weren't chosen to participate in the intra-school battle? It would make sense if they wanted to show that they should be the ones representing the school, but they came out of nowhere... but as you put it, odd that it happened, just so that she then showed up at the witch's house, only to be then start the setup with someone seeming to have ulterior motives.

When she was spying on the two of them from outside, she was called that by the passerby dude that got subsequently beat down, and then she crawled on the wall into the cafe in a way eerily similar to one (comedically, as if to suggest she was, in fact, acting like a cockroach).

Oh right, lol. Completely forgot about that even as I rewatched that scene hahaha.

Quit after half of episode 1. Does this get significantly better later on? :/

What I saw felt like someone made an Atelier Ryza-anime, but switched the sexy girl for a balls-less shota :/

What I saw felt like someone made an Atelier Ryza-anime, but switched the sexy girl for a balls-less shota I guess. But pretty much every other character in the show is a girl. It's 1000% doing the "sexually oblivious harem protagonist" thing.

But it's still funny.

It's blatant and deliberately telegraphed gags. But it works because the characters in-universe all play completely straight until the gag lands.
- The yandere is funny
- The tsundere is cute
- The spaz witch is entertaining
- The yandere-lite OP witch is also entertaining with the spaz witch
- The looming doom vibes get deflated instantly by the "I guess I'm not good enough," OP male lead.
- The kuudere hasn't grown on me yet

I have insanely low expectations for the weekly episodes, but they still make me laugh without fail.

It's not Keijo!!! tier (trashy but engaging because it takes itself so seriously), but that's the vibe the series gives me. Expect nothing, but be entertained and engaged each week somehow anyway.

edit:
example: They reuse the gag a lot where Lloyd showing up behind someone or from through a door makes them nearly shit themselves, then he greets them all friendly, chipper, and oblivious, yet they still make it funny every time.

Trying to figure out who the kuudere in this series is... Maria?

I was referring to Phyllo, the blond martial arts amazon, though she does also go into yandere mode.

I pegged her as the yandere-lite OP witch in your list, but now not sure she's IS a witch... so then I thought by spaz witch you meant her sister LOL. So now I know you meant Maria and the grandma for those slots.

I'm going to need a legend here.

I love Phyllo personally, but honestly of all the characters adapted, I think she's the least one I've liked in how it was handled.

Ryllharu

Phyllo punting Lloyd out of the house, and specifically having him deflect off the mountain was one of the best set up gags in a recent series.

They spent almost the entire episode seemingly randomly setting up the pieces for that joke, and it paid off brilliantly.

For now don't think I'm going to watch more, I stopped when the hotel arc began. It had a few changes that I didn't care for, not that important in the end, but mostly the anime is going beyond what I've read in the LN and don't want to spoil that for myself, even though honestly I don't care all that much for the LN series.

May return in the future to finish the anime.

It was funny, pretty much the whole way through.

I actually really like what they've done with the RPG-inspired fantasy genre in general here.

The gags are funny and set up pretty flawlessly every time. The characters are right on the cusp of being annoying as shit, and that works for the angle on the humor they're going for. Each one fits at least one cliché, and they abuse the standard very nicely in each instance.

And the plot isn't overwritten in any way. It just all works.

You're not going to find a particularly compelling narrative, but you will find an exceptionally enjoyable one.

I had an inkling that this series would work quite well animated, it has some good comedy going for it even though I don't care all that much for the LN, though it's a palate cleanser when needed. Not at the level of Konosuba, but I figure it has a target for those that are missing something along those lines. But as said in the previous post, I'm not watching more of the series since I want to read more of the LN before I do so. At the very least, glad some enjoyed it and probably will boost sales of the LN.

Feel free to discuss the content assuming someone else is still watching. The last LN I read was in the hotel arc with the treant monster, so it couldn't go much further than that I reckon regardless.
