This absolutely deserves a thread. Latest news:

Just fucking horrible. This morning it only said 'people injured'. Now during the last couple hours it went from 24 to 33 dead people. And equally many are in hospital.

Indeed an outrageous act. I wonder if the criminal was delusional or if his claims actually hold some water.

Shinta, can you tell from the reports if the reported response of, “They ripped me off,” is translated from the word for plagiarism or monetary (like pay, sale of rights, or just getting swindled)?

I've seen both, but most news outlets are going with the ambiguous line I have in quotes.

I don't have the original Japanese text. When I try to switch language in Asahi.com, it takes me to the Japanese home page. If I try to read articles about it in Japanese, the site tries to make me pay to read the news.

There's a wiki article on this, and references 7, 23, 25 are supposed to reflect "plagiarism".

Thoughts shinta?

The only relevant info I could get from the three articles you mentioned as references is that there was nothing in the threat emails saying that KyoAni "stole an idea."

Original text:
「ネタをパクった」などというメールについては「そういう苦情はなかった」と八田社長は説明し た。

President Hatta explained that, "There were no complaints in the emails about 'stealing ideas.'"

----

That said, these email threats had been coming since years before. So far, the only news source that directly reported the words "You ripped me off." is Asahi, and other outlets just re-reported that. Still can't find a Japanese text version of that, assuming it is even reliably true.

Sad part:
NHK reported that an official at the Kyoto City Fire Department said that most of the 20 people who were found dead on the stairs that led from the third floor of the studio building to the rooftop were lying on top of one another right near the door to the roof. When rescuers reached the roof, the door was closed, though not locked.

------
They were almost saved..! Shit!!
