"Chakuro is the 14-year-old archivist of the Mud Whale, a nigh-utopian island that floats across the surface of an endless sea of sand. Nine in ten of the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been blessed and cursed with the ability to use saimia, special powers that doom them to an early death. Chakuro and his friends have stumbled across other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a human who wasn't from their own. A strong start. I've heard this being likened to 'filling the gap' left by Made in Abyss last season, and I can see where one could draw the comparison. World building, many questions, few answers, and an uncaring environment ready to swallow our characters whole. I would say the narration falls a bit on the more traditional 'anime' end of the spectrum by telling a bit more than showing, breaking down almost every little custom and outright conversing some unnecessary details, instead of letting the audience piece it together from context clues, but in its defense, a couple concepts like repressing emotions aren't the most readable at a glance. Either a Netflix or Amazon 'exclusive', Horriblesubs doesn't seems to be touching this one, so releases are going to harken back to the days of the small-time artisan subbers getting around to it. Recommended for the adventure craving.
