Synopsis

Life in the bustling city of Orario is never dull, especially for Bell Cranel, a naïve young man who hopes to become the greatest adventurer in the land. After a chance encounter with the lonely goddess, Hestia, his dreams become a little closer to reality. With her support, Bell embarks on a fantastic quest as he ventures deep within the city's monster-filled catacombs, known only as the "Dungeon." Death lurks around every corner in the cavernous depths of this terrifying labyrinth, and a mysterious power moves amidst the shadows.

Even on the surface, survival is a hard-earned privilege. Indeed, nothing is ever certain in a world where gods and humans live and work together, especially when they often struggle to get along. One thing is for sure, though: a myriad of blunders, triumphs and friendships awaits the dauntlessly optimistic protagonist of this herculean tale.

We all know and watched the anime of this story, so I'm gonna skip the intros and general thoughts about it. What I wanted to do was promote the light novels that are direct continuations of the anime. They are amazing, especially because they have official releases that have much better translations than the fan versions.

The 6th volume picks up right after where the anime left off, and let me tell you, the climaxes and battles all rival the Minotaur battle in the anime. Bell is such a lovable character, especially when you can read his thoughts. Anyway, as a light novel fan, any and all support for the medium is appreciated. You can get the books digital or paperback in amazon, google books, etc. The digital ones only run 7.99 USD per book, so go get em!

Changed thread title to "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" which seems is the official title.

I'll see about giving this a look. I like reading books, but never gone into the Light Novel industry, partly because of translations issues.

How well adapted are volumes 1-5?

Edit: Just in case, I mean how well did the anime adapt volumes 1-5.

They say that the latter part of the anime cut out some stuff, but I didn't notice any issues picking up volume 6. The light novel conveniently reminds the reader of what has happened so far, so you don't even need an anime refresher, especially after watching Oratoria.

The only thing that bothers me about the translation is the use of Mr. and Ms. to replace -san, and Lord and Lady to replace -sama, but I got used to it soon enough. The action in particular is noteworthy. It's very detailed but not dragging to read and is very exciting. Seeing Bell grow really strong is also a huge plus.

The leveling system and stats/skills/magic are also explained in better detail. The world in general is also given much more depth. There are also clear cut villains this time that Bell has to overcome.

Overall, it's one of my favorite LNs now, which is saying something because I sorta gave up on a lot of titles recently.

Fair enough, I'll see when I can find time for it.

A year late, but I just began reading it. We'll see how it goes. Just finished catching up to volume 13 of Overlord, which is pretty much my first Japanese Light Novel series I've attempted.

I will be buying it the day it is out. The LN are so good. The anime got me so interested and I don't normally read novels. I had to read the LNs to know what happens after the anime. I hope a Season 2 happens. So much awesome coming up in the next 5-6 volumes.

After I finish this, I'll start hunting more LN series to read... so will need more recommendations. On volume 7 now, once I'm done with volume 11 I'll move to the Oratoria spin-off.

This gets really good after the prostitute and side story romance novel. You will blast through everything after that.

Side story romance novel, as in a volume in this sequence or another title like Oratoria?

It's volume 8. It focuses on other characters, like Welf, Lili, etc, but it is entertaining too. It doesn't develop the main plot of Bell as much, but it can't be skipped because so many important character events and decisions are made, not to mention good ol fashioned character development.

All caught up now, well at least to volume 11.

Is Oratoria a good read as well?

Regardless, need some recommendations now for more Light Novels... have only read this and Overlord on that regard.

Anyways, really liked the final volume, though I felt there were some errors in translation. Volume 10 made it a point on how Xenos weren't killing people, then at the beginning of Volume 11 they talk about casualties, then they say directly something caused X character and her group's death, and in the later paragraph they talk to about her being alive and ready to do battle.

Just a minor thing that took me out of the reading...

Another thing that bothers me is how the difference in strength from one level to the next is represented in this series. There's too much of a gap from one level to the next, also although it's cool that it's different then the norm (as in low level system), it kinda stagnates our characters, being stuck doing the same over and over. It also means that our party is stuck with these level 1 characters.

Also, not sure how I feel about the afterword with the author mentioning that he's satisfied with the Minotaur being the main and sole rival (end game?). Again, unless there's something lost in translation, it leaves something to be desired.

Anyways, will get to volume 12 at a later date (and probably Oratoria as well), but hunting for a new series for the time being.

And also read volume 12, and quite enjoyed it... quite refreshing back to basics dungeon crawl, but also sets up the next arc.

Will do. Safe to read Oratoria volume 8 then? Or should I wait until I read this and vol 14 as well?

Well, I said fuck it and read it anyways. The battles were intense, so good things on that regard. I just hope that at least Bell learns that mercy isn't always the right answer, but doubt it. A lot of this could've been avoided if he was more ruthless.

Was the cliffhanger as brutal as rumors made them to be? I haven't actually read it.

¿Yes and no?

Let's just say that the battle they were fighting seems finished, but they're in a new predicament. It wasn't that bad of a stopping point since you're not left wondering about the "status" of anyone.
