Five hundred years have passed since the humans went extinct at the hands of the fearsome and mysterious 'Beasts.' The surviving races now make their homes up on floating islands in the sky, out of reach of all but the most mobile of Beasts.

Only a small group of young girls, the Leprechauns, can wield the ancient weapons needed to fend off invasions from these creatures. Into the girls' unstable and fleeting lives, where a call to certain death could come at any moment, enters an unlikely character: a young man who lost everything in his final battle five hundred years ago, the last living human awakened from a long, icy slumber.

Unable to fight any longer, Willem becomes the father that the girls never had, caring for and nurturing them even as he struggles to come to terms with his new life, in which he feels the pain of helplessly waiting for his loved ones to return home from battle that his 'Daughter' once felt for him so long ago. Together, Willem and the girls gradually come to understand what family means and what is truly worth protecting.

episode 1 release three days ago and nobody noticed ;/

I just watched and Iīm extremely pleasured from what Iīve seen. I had no expectations to find ANOTHER good anime this season, but here it is. No worse than Zero Kara.
The setting is fantastic. Itīs a world where humans are rare, most of the world is inhabited by animal people. Whatīs outstanding imo is the town design. This place looks like A LOT of effort has been put into designing that pace. I actually liked the "cheap" montage at the beginning where the two leads were searching the city, because it gave me the opportunity to enjoy the cityīs design.

The music was also very nice.

I will admit that the last third of the episode felt a bit weaker, mainly because of the maid girl. Just keep any harem shit out of this, please. But itīs nothing big, so far.

Anyway, this is another definite watch. :)

I was burdened by some apprehension before giving this a try. It's because I don't particularly like the men are powerless, only girls possess some special power allowing them to fight plot element. Well, it's not like the first episode would have removed that misgiving. In fact I at least hoped this last human had some kind of dramatic entrance and deeper purpose, such as carrying ancient, lost knowledge that would make a difference. Instead he was a fricking hobo who was picked from the streets for the job, probably because the orc got a reward for finding anybody who would accept the task. I didn't hate the first episode, but the next ones better give some meaning to the dude being the last human.

He isnīt the last human. Humans are just really rare.

Anyway, ep 2 was okay, but I hope ep 3 breaks up the slice of life a bit and shows some action as well as drama.

Huh? I thought he was the last human. The maid explicitly said that.

The description itself says he's the last one. I reckon he saw the end of an era when all the all plans failed. Perhaps one of the original users of those swords use a special power to freeze him.

This will be annoying to watch if it's just slice of life that won't progress anywhere. Apparently generations upon generations of these fairy girls have perished fighting the beasts, and nobody expects that to change. It's a bit weird this is the first time a human is involved in any way in the current war, yet that's supposed to make no difference? I'd rather imagine it will, and this show has a real plot.

episode 3 is out
------------------

Definitely better than ep2 and Iīll keep watching. Some action, even though it makes me wonder how strong those monsters actually are, when a normal human guy can keep up with a leprecheaun girl (yeah, at the cost of his health, but still ...). Seems like none of the girls would have to sacrifice themselves if only they got some proper battle training.

I need to say, though: All those little girls are super cute. Goddamn. The way to move in a group is so adorable.

I feel like you missed something essential in this episode. He's not a normal human, after all, he's one of the Emnetwihts, that is, the legendary, notorious beings who invented the super swords that are the only weapon against the beasts. Also, he's not sacrificing his health to beat these girls because he doesn't anymore have a health to begin with. He lost it fighting that giant monster in the flashback. I assume these leprechaun girls always need to sacrifice their own life to beat something lesser than the MC did beat in the past without exploding himself. The leprechauns are merely imitating what the MC dude is in order to use the swords.

This revelation is just what this story needed. I can now somewhat accept the reason why the dude himself won't be fighting much: His past fights damaged him far too much. Now we only need to learn a bit more about the history, such as why the Emnetwihts are so hated.

This is turning out to be quite an interesting story.

I thought "Emnetwhits" was just this animeīs name for "humans".

It might be, and I guess it was, maybe when humans were already running out. However, your "when a normal human guy can keep up" made me think you missed some detail. They were the people who invented the super swords and used them originally, so it seemed strange you wondered how one of the Emnetwiht could best a leprechaun whose only merit is being able to imitate an Emnetwiht.

You know what I thought about, though? WHY is it that modern animes all feel so "anime", for a lack of a better word? The setting and story of this anime would be so more powerful and simply better, if it was presented like "Haibane Renmei". Instead, everything is so busy, thereīs sexual jokes, and thereīs too many trope-y elements. Itīs really unfortunate that modern anime wonīt allow themselves to be ... slower and down-to-earth.

Quite a good episode, especially the end. The dude has got damn invested in these girls. The reunion scene worked really well.

I have to confess I couldn't really get into the lizard romance any more than the MC, so the first part was lost on me.

Better episode. Although it still sucks that thereīs so much wasted potential. But it is what it is.

Looking forward to how this anime concludes. Right now I have no idea.

It's jolly good the MC is showing more and more often his background as one of the infamous Emnetwiht. I don't want him to replace the girls as the main fighting force, but it's good he's not just a passive character. His staunch attitude and bearing also serve to make the atmosphere better, now that he's not a hobo anymore. I also appreciately how he as an Emnetwiht obviously has to know a whole lot, but he's mainly keeping it to himself and doing what he can for the girls. The lack of a hero of justice element in this episode was especially good, even if he naturally did end up dealing with the crooks that attacked.

Just how ridiculously strong is the lead? Snipping coins so hard and fast that they knock enemies over? wtf

shinta|hikari
Thu, 05-11-2017, 09:21 AM
He defeated gigantic monsters with godlike powers, so tossing coins against mere fodder is nothing.

I wonder if he will ever overcome the curses burdening him and lead the girls to victory himself.

Didn't they say earlier that his body is a wreck? I don't think he can fight seriously for any longer period of time anymore.

Yeah from what I recall Nygglatho saying is that his bones are broken, organs are barely functional and his muscles are frail. I don't think he can do actual combat.

shinta|hikari
Thu, 05-11-2017, 02:56 PM
That's because of the curses placed upon him. If those can be lifted, he should heal normally, or at least with the help of magic.

Episode 8

Did they say at some point the leprechaun girls are created by binding some ancient Emnetwiht ghosts to be able to use the Emnetwiht weapons? I can't remember anymore. If that was it, it seems like Chtholly is slowly being overwritten by the original spirit. I can't see the military being too happy about it, should such a thing happen. Otherwise she's nicely outgoing, hammering her way through the dude's skull. Too bad it might end in a tragedy, but that wouldn't be too surprising considering these girls were designed to be expendable weapons.

Looks like episode 9 is out, but I've only watched up to episode 8 so far.

Not sure how I feel about the series yet, I've liked watching it, but it seems like a lot of "rinse and repeat" scenes, and not much focus on the action which I wanted to see or into the political aspect, which has been quite glossed over other than for an episode... and not much at that.

Episode 10

- - - - - --

Did they create the Beasts by sacrificing whole towns of humans? That's quite a bioweapon: First it gets rid of a large amount of targets, then it uses their life force to create a monster than kills even more enemies. Or who knows if they were even enemies and not just random people. It feels like whoever created those weapons in the beginning wasn't particularly interested in making his own country win but just killing the whole humanity, a la the super villains of doomsday stories. It's the Emnetwiht's fault, yeah, but they were also the biggest victims of it.

I might be wrong, but I think the ghost inside of Chtholly is Willem's past girlfriend. Quite a combo.

Episode 11

So, according to Elq's story, aliens led by Elq tried to stop humans from destroying the world by wiping humans out, but instead humans managed to kill Elq, stopping the alien horde's attack. After that humans turned into beasts and destroyed the world. It feels like there's something super essential missing in this story. Were humans originally simply following the mundane path of industrialisation and such, basically slowly destroying the environment, and starmen tried to save the planet like in an old scifi movie? To oppose those aliens, humans created monsters, but eventually those monsters turned against humans themselves, like in the second old scifi movie.

It seems a little unfair to blame the Emnetwiht for what happened because they would have died nonetheless even if they had done nothing, eradicated by the Engineers. Too bad for Willem nobody knows this whole story. Instead everybody blames the humans who simply didn't have a choice.

Canīt really talk a lot, because this anime went rather random, too. What I didnīt understand: Does the red haired girl intend to make Cotorri vanish? It wasnt clear to me because of how cheerful she talked about it. "Oh, so youīre still you, even though most of what makes you you has already vanished". Ok ... ?

NeoCybercoin
Wed, 06-21-2017, 06:26 AM
So from what I understand all of the Leprechaun's are Elq. What about that catgirl? She obviously isn't. Her hair didn't turn red.

shinta|hikari

No, Leps are children who died without fully realizing it. Elq is just one of those and serves as Chtholly's base.

Regarding the whole humans turning to beasts thing, it felt to me it spread like some zombie virus, probably with many vectors like air/water/contact and probably affecting many animals too:
Humans become beasts, and animals somehow get some human traits...
So you're either infected or get killed and the spread is exponentially faster each minute/hour/day

It still has to tie in somehow with what the alien girl was talking about. It wouldn't be much of a story otherwise.

They were busy trying to find weapons to fight the gods/aliens. They did succeed in finding some biological mods, but these hybrids started to develop on their own with exponential growth. So the human won with a weapon that also killed them.
And I added a digression to explain why we now have so many human/animal hybrids because I do not think we've been told any background stories about them.

This was still a better show than many others. At least the world building, the characters, and the general atmosphere had a bit more effort put into it than in an average series these days. Of course it's only my personal opinion, but I quite liked this, as tragic and forlorn as it was. One big factor was that the characters weren't all the time doing stupid shit and acting against their personality only to serve the plot, like happens in too many shows.

glimpsing through that reddit thread, it seems like this story is pretty fleshed out in terms of world building.
Pretty nice to read some of these spoilers, even though I can't truely make anything out of them (and don't want to because there is a chance that I'll bother reading it).

Now, it's a little bit sad that you don't get to understand *any* of that in the anime... they could at least have explained Elq a little bit more, not necessarily reveal what she is, but hint at things a bit more.

I enjoyed this show. It could have used a bit more episodes or another season (one of many shows that could have). I am starting the LN in hopes it goes a bit further into the story. I would like to know more about the visitors, the beasts, eboncandle, elq etc. Actually I am left with more questions then answers at this point.
