Not knowing the heritage of this series (aside from it being a prequel/origin story), I was surprised when I saw the jarring character designs that looked like they came out of a mega man game partway through the first episode. Only at the ed credit scene did I realize that even those were modernized from the originals in the side-by sides.

As for my impression of the show itself, it is nice to see an anime that generally does not conform to modern anime storytelling. Most characters harbor good and evil, there is not necessarily a happy end for the main character; he does not always realize the correct answers himself (actually, the moral dilemmas in this show have so far been arguable on either side). Give it a watch and share if you feel the same.

I'm also watching it.
Thing is, I watched all team medical dragon dramas.... And it does everything ybj does, but a lot better.
And yes, it's entirely possible tmd stole the best parts of bj. But that's tmd I watched first.
So when watching that anime, I'm always feeling a little bored instead of feeling on edge, as most if not all surprise elements I already know.

Just finished this anime. I think it was very well done. It motivated me to watch the sequel -- Black Jack -- but the drop in quality is massive. Unfortunately it's produced so poorly I can't even watch it :/
