Are these Ds people who in the distant past lost a war against the celestial dragons, before this era of the world government? It might have been a civil war as well.

If Kid is also a D, I predict reaching a point in the series where Luffy, Law, Kid and Blackbeard are the Four Emperors. And they're all Ds.

I thought maybe the D's were Celestial Dragons themselves and the D stood for Dragon, but then I realized that would make Luffy's dad's name Monkey Dragon Dragon.
