Japan as depicted in many anime: the only place in the world where high school students are expected to act as security detail for their own events and where it's acceptable to respond to the question of "do you notice anything strange" with "yes, there's too many white people around."

They are artificially created or genetically altered teenagers, so yeah.

If the kids are stronger and have more experience (like Ichijou and Tatsuya) than adults, why not?

This isn't a Japan thing, but a Mahouka thing. I'm pretty sure other countries also employ youths if they can offer valuable assistance.

Maybe it should have been obvious from the beginning and I simply failed to accept it, whereas others did, but finally it seems clear to even me the generation of magicians that has grown to high school age now is different from earlier mages. There might have been lone aberrations before, though not enough to make a difference, but looking at the bigger picture the older magicians, compared to the ones that are populating high schools and younger, are like hay carts compared to helicopters. Who knows what happened between them, some huge breakthrough in human genetic engineering that was applied on a national level or something else, but that's the only thing which can explain the great many strange things here, including a high school magic sports meeting being such a big thing, being responsible for their own security, and coming up with flight magic or nuclear fusion, to only mention a few examples. The older generations simply weren't capable of such magic, otherwise they would have been invented already and school kids would never be patrolling the grounds wearing bulletproof vests.

Well, 3 more episodes to go and this series will be done.

Seems like there's a lot to cover still, so I hope it has a second season and what not.

In any case, didn't care much for this episode... more of a tease for what's coming up, setting the table.

I don't quite get what was the point of that whole last scene of the military officer first revealing Tatsuya's position in the army (though not the rank, as if that mattered more) and then Miyuki having the knight and the princess theatrical piece performed, all in front of the big gallery. Couldn't the officer perhaps have invited Tatsuya (and Miyuki I guess, since it would have been difficult to leave her behind) to a different room first? While it's typically nice to watch other established characters get surprised by the main character, it was somewhat forced and meaningless in this case. The emotionless Tatsuya himself naturally doesn't give a shit, and I believe Miyuki in some perverse fashion actually enjoys doing things with Tatsuya in public. Of course there's always also the beneficial side that when their normal student image (if they ever even had such) cracks, she gets to keep Tatsuya all the more to herself. Although I thought it was Miyuki who wanted to play a normal school girl and Tatsuya was only humouring her, but whatever.

Other than that, just how fricking long can it take them to sink the bloody ship?

I thought the same about the rank issue, but then I think what she actually meant was that Tatsuya being a special officer is a classified matter, so all present there are not at liberty to reveal Tatsuya for who he is to anyone else... I think that was the intention.

Anyways, not going to over-think the episode. I enjoyed the action, and if I heard correctly Tatsuya is about to become even more badass than he currently is? Can't wait...

LOL I've just come to accept this entire series as just a big fucking joke and orgy-fest for Tatsuya to show off his skills.

Loved the scene with Cardinal George.

George: "Tatsuya, wait! That's a top secret move, how in the world do you know that? You should not have access to that information?"

Tatsuya: "Dude who fucking cares. just shut the fuck up i dont have time to deal with your shit right now"

So wallhacks, demon light and "molecular divider" are all just the tip of the iceberg. Nice.

You know how Tatsuya actually sucks at the normal parameters that are usually used to assess mages (activation speed, power etc). What if that's his "rein" and he's actually God? You really don't get much more badass than when your sister wipes you off after a kill.

The last scene didn't make sense in that Tatsuya's power restriction should have been a military one, controlled by his superiors. Miyuki unlocking it seemed strange.

I suppose the other unknown thing revealed this episode was that Mayumi was also capable of clairvoyance to some extent as well.

I'd say taking Tatsuya and Miyuki first elsewhere to have Tatsuya perform military duties would be far less risky than counting on these students to keep their mouths shut. The only logical way out of this is if in the next episode the officer recruits the rest to do something vital for the operation. Then knowing Tatsuya is officially working for the defense forces would motivate them in their own tasks. However, Tatsuya being the god of magic that he is, I don't really see what there'd be left for anybody else to do.

Loved the scene with Cardinal George.

That dude was a big disappointment. I was under the impression he had done some actual work outside of school with Suzaku, but apparently he was a 100% normal student, after all. He's far less useful in this situation than Tatsuya's normal bunch of friends.

The last scene didn't make sense in that Tatsuya's power restriction should have been a military one, controlled by his superiors. Miyuki unlocking it seemed strange.

Not necessarily. The 10 major families are like 10 extra powers of their own in the country. Miyuki & Tatsuya's was said to be the strongest of them, if I recall correctly. It's an undesirable situation for the government and official government institutions like the military, but nonetheless it would mean the family wouldn't allow an outsider, like the military, to restrict Tatsuya. The family would do it themselves so that they could use Tatsuya when they wanted, even if it was to defend themselves against the military. Thus this seemed far more logical to me. Tatsuya might be loyal to the army but you can bet he's still far more loyal to Miyuki.

That would not be consistent with the information given so far. It was already mentioned that Tatsuya was broken emotionally in an attempt to fix his "poor" magic ability. It is probably a gas tank thing. His techniques won't change but his power and endurance will. It would go against the theme of the story if he suddenly used normal magic now.

Wasn't anybody bothered by the utterly witless actions by the terrorists? Did they even have any objectives? Did they have any leadership despite the fact we were shown those old geezer officers multiple times? The mecha with bigass gatling guns apparently needed to get within 20 meters of the target to do anything, as opposed to hundreds of meters away from carefully chosen positions. Kind of like the American attack helicopters shot at their targets from a safe kilometer away in Iraq, relying on advanced optics. At first I
thought maybe it's because they want live hostages, but that wasn't the case either since the terrorist infantry was always shooting and attacking whenever they could.

Although the Japanese government wasn't any better: The fricking huge command/cargo ship the government had recognized from the get-go was allowed to stay undisturbed. No cruise missile. No fighter attack. No mage attack. No nothing. Apparently nobody thought that if you destroy the enemy high command, it just might slightly hinder their operations.

Once again it's proven why these things are called light novels.

I've read the novel - and it was the kind of mindless fun, with tons of plot holes.. but you could picture easily how it would be animated. not to mention that all 'onii-samas' were like a inside joke.

sadly adaptation to anime fucked it up even further - it prolonged the boring parts for no reason, rushed action, and gave lenghtly explanations of everything(usually by tatsuya-jesus) EXCEPT where it was needed.

i had high hopes for adaptation early on:
if they went with action show(they easily could do it), toned tatsuya-jesus powerlevel down(because we clearly seen that he is basically omnipotent) .. and removed Miyuki's role because she brings nothing of merit to "plot".

It's pretty funny how the conversation aboard the chopper tried to give Tatjesus a couple of weaknesses, but in practice they don't manifest at all. He repeatedly resurrected his squad members after having healed the students, without showing any hesitation or discomfort. According to Miyuki he's poor at most magic because most of his brain is reserved for the 24 hours immortality magic, but in reality, despite performing poorly in certain goofy school tests, he can actually use more varied magic than anybody else and is a superior magical technician to the rest of the world combined. So, where exactly do those weaknesses lie? Miyuki's speech sounded like nothing but propaganda and governmental cover-up to make these civilian outsiders think Tatsuya isn't so omnipotent after all. Although I can hardly blame her for spreading those lies; it's for her own good and for Tatsuya's good obviously if less people know the truth.

Tatsuya has used that spell multiple times already. The immediate price of the spell is the condensed suffering feedback. The long term effects of that would be felt a person's mental health and mind. In fact, I interpreted that this is the explanation for Tatsuya's seemingly lack of human emotions - he's been numbed from casting this spell multiple times. You could even argue that the only thing that keeps him human is his unnatural love for his sister. He endures this so he can return to her.

Miyuki openly longs for her brother, but she's also her brother's lifeline.

Miyuki is Tatsuya's only real weakness. Too bad she is absurdly powerful herself.

They didn't show Miyuki's most powerful spell... She isn't even an elementalist...

All in all, I enjoyed this show. Some parts were poorly done (like WTF were those soldiers standing around for? Take cover, dammit), but at least they kept the parts I liked, mainly OP Tatsuya, brocon Miyuki, and the short but sweet battles.

Ok, so material burst is getting matter to explode -here probably hydrogene in water drops- with the E=mc2 law.I understand it's use the second time. It's important to leave a scar in your enemy's harbour that prooves they were severely beaten.
But the first use was unneccessary in my opinion. Unless Tatsuya's zapping spell has a size limit, I think it would have been a better option for the first strike.

They should have taken out the ship the moment they noticed it, and they noticed it quite early. The enemy commander was absolutely correct saying the Japanese were naive to leave them unchecked using environmental damage or whatever as an excuse. We saw in this episode at the latest that the enemy brought a whole fricking army with APCs and those battle mecha and lots of troops to the city. It was a war in the middle of a Japanese city, yet the Japanese couldn't afford to send in a single missile to take out the enemy command and cargo ship. It was utterly pitiful, even if they were victorious eventually and struck back highly efficiently. Not that the enemy ground troops would have been any better... But I guess an average Japanese author would be hard-pressed to write better than this considering pacifism is in their constitution.

1,5h for about 10-15 minutes worth of fighting.
They should really make a more action oriented anime about this. The fight scenes are awesome, techno-magic is pretty cool.

The movie overall is pretty bad though and could be improved on by adding another 40 minutes of combat. It featured several high class special ops mages and even 2 "strategic" mages after all. Yet they didn't even have a showdown or anything remotely close to that.

Didn't even get to see that much badassery considering that, even Tatsuya was pretty mild this time around... *sigh* - he didn't even fight anything other than "objects" this time around

The spellblades and melee combat scenes were pretty dope though

Watched it for the blonde girl in the trailer.... expected her to be featured more, considering her position on the movie-poster.

There were some good scenes in the movie, like the fighting scenes, scenes with lots of special effects, and also some comedy like the Darth Vader suit. However, the plot was more or less witless and didn't make much sense on any level. Like the Japanese Navy research lab trying to justify their existence and the worth of their technology by attacking the USA. The idiot researcher leader will probably soon wish he had died in the attack. He was even more crazy than the psycho Stars member.

In the end this is one of those anime movies that's only based on cramming the maximum amount of familiar characters in, providing some fanservice, and presenting a bunch of flashy scenes. The story is of no concern whatsoever. The Magical Index movie, for example, was exactly the same.

A really low onii-sama count in this first episode, probably because Miyuki only had a few lines in the episode (of course it didn't prevent her from uttering it a couple of times). Glorious Nippon Banzai meter was showing quite high readings, however from early on. It would have been nice to know how tough Lina is against a broader spectrum of the school's student body. All in all, even her practical experience doesn't give an edge against Miyuki, after all, Miyuki as well has practical experience from the field. Not that I'd be impressed by Lina's professionalism because she did hesitate long and hard before shooting the traitor. On the other hand, it's better a teenager would hesitate. Otherwise she would be either broken like Tatsuya or someone who never had a childhood in the first place (a child soldier).

It would have been great if Lina, supposedly working for some kind of special forces with a considerable rank, could actually keep her mission in mind and not just do whatever, jeopardising everything. Like why on Earth would she even bother to face and attack Tatjesus at the end of the episode? She was there to kill the parasite host, foremost, I guess retrieving the body as a secondary objective. She wasn't there to engage the local high schoolers in a fight, especially one whose power she can't even begin to understand. Just throw a bloody flashbang between them.

The story is so simpleton-written every now and then.

So much nonsense. I guess strong magicians are so hard to come by that the USA has no choice but to keep employing Lina in her current position. She really should be sent to a military academy for a few years, though. She has no concept whatsoever of priorities. That idiotic duel with the bet was the worst of it.

Shizuku's managing to find some ultimate sucker dude with family connections, I assume, however, was far better thought out. Women ensnaring men and loose lips have always been two extremely potent tools used by intelligence agencies. Seeing how enamored that loser dude was, I doubt Shizuku even needs to give him a kiss to extract all the information in the world out of him.

Perhaps this is the first time she said it aloud so that Tatsuya might have heard it accidentally? There's no way she wouldn't have thought about it before. Unless she's denser than tatsunium.

It's kind of tiresome how the cheap nationalism in the writing needs to make others so incompetent to make Japan look better. This story would lose absolutely nothing by not making Japan worlds above the rest of the world. Like Lina is suggested to be the strongest in the USA, but I imagine, based on what we have seen in the series so far, there're probably at least 20 people, or more, in Japan that could beat her. After all, we haven't actually really seen those outside of the school student bodies, more or less, apart from the monk dude teaching Tatsuya. You'd think the ruling families, whom Tatsuya also bows down to, would have monsters of their own, who aren't school kids anymore. Even if Tatjesus obviously is the best of them.

It's just a joke that high school girls that have 0 combat experience can beat a specialized and trained combat magican like that.
I have no problem with Tatsuya beating her, I have a problem with Mizuki being able to battle her.
I don't even have a problem with Mizuki winning in raw-power. But this is just dumb.

Don't build up characters like that when in reality they are some weak ass kiddos.
All these kids in that school are waaaay to strong.

I'm a little mixed about this. I get that Miyuki is supposed to be ridiculously strong amongst her peers. I do expect her to be inferior to Lina in terms of application and experience though. I can only say that "no killing" gimps Lina here since she's not Jesus and can't just delete whatever spells come out of the opponent. She seems to specialise in shooting psion bullets that wreck people's brains.

Lina's mentality is another issue though. She's nowhere near as professional as someone her rank should be.

The no killing doesn't gimp her because she doesn't want to kill anyone, anyway. She's just a school kid. At least that much is realistic, haha. I very much agree with KrayZ33 on the role of the school kids and their capabilities. Tatjesus aside, since he's supposed to be a biological weapon, it's just stupid. It's also stupid Miyuki is some miracle powerhouse alone in the world. What's Japan's population compared to the population of the rest of the world? China or India should have multiple Miyukis, even the USA should have a few. Not to mention there should be more Tatsuyas here and there in the world. But no, because glorious Nippon banzai.

This is basically no different from the isekai subgenre, where the MC has godly cheat powers nobody can challenge. Only here it's the whole Japan. This is clearly a unique storytelling culture created by the light novel authors in Japan. It's like the Mary/Gary Stu to the power of 10.

Episode 7

- - - -

In the Tatjesus universe, the whole US military should quit military. They aren't up to the task. That whatever commander of Lina's, she had no idea what exactly they were going to fight, she only knew Tatsuya is far more powerful than Lina, but she nonetheless ordered a top talent in the US forces to engage that unknown. Normally in the military you plan operations so that you have a chance to win, unless you are in an exceedingly desperate situation.

I'm almost tempted to believe that woman even wasn't who she was supposed to be, but was an impersonator, working for the third party. Thus she wouldn't give a shit about whether the operation succeeds or if Lina lives or dies. However, to have someone infiltrate the American operation like that would be even more pitiful for the Americans than simply being incompetent at catching the parasites and studying Tatsuya's case.

By the way, what happened to the super weapon, Brionac? Is it still lying in that park, until some dude taking his dog for a walk finds it and turns it into a floor lamp? I'm just going to assume that's what happens.

Kraco, unwarranted confidence is the most American thing in existence. Haven't you learned that by now?

I live in the US but am not American. It gives me a bit more perspective than others.

Yeah, the robot is definitely a keeper. It must not be destroyed. It's far too comedic in how it revealed certain someone's feelings for all the world to hear.

Just caught up to episode 11, and didn't like this arc at all, found it quite boring. Hopefully the next one is better.

They built a building reliant on dynamic stability provided by gyros?
I mean,.. yeah, that's cool and you can make super tall buildings I guess.. but that's only slightly more efficient than an flying castle - and those are just way cooler.

This arc started more interesting to me than the previous one. I mean, the other one had a solid start with killing rogue magicians and what not, but I was really not into the whole parasite thing and I thought Angelina would end up being a more interesting character than she ended being, but overall I like the staging of this next arc so far better.

So since last time we've had the Miyuki Highschool Version (https://myanimelist.net/anime/45572/Mahouka_Koukou_no_Yuutousei)of the show, and now the Reminiscence arc (https://myanimelist.net/anime/48375/Mahouka_Koukou_no_Rettousei__Tsuioku-hen).

-So I thought this would be a "How Miyuki came to like her brother" arc, but really she already liked him. She just had to figure out why.

-Soldier acting like a punk on the street, got his ass handed to him by a ~10 year old, then got it handed to him properly again but was okay with it? Seems weird.

-The whole "collateral" thing doesn't check out. If the "target" for the attack was the CEO family, then why did the soldiers hesitate when they were invited to take them into protection? Why did they ask the Yotsubas first? Given how all-knowing the aunt appears, this doesn't seem right.

-The military just happens to have child-sized armour?

-Security around mother seemed lax. But turns out the body-guard woman could block missiles, so why didn't she block bullets? Seems dumb.

-Tatsuya: the Origin at least makes sense somewhat. If the mother also lost emotions, and "only she could perform the surgery", I'd argue that it's less an Artificial Magic Calculation Area and more "Mother transplated part of her magic circuit into her son". Seems like she still sees him as a lesser person because of her magician prejudice, but also tried her hardest to fix that for him.

-Miyuki sounds like she's only known her brother for a brief period of time. Did they hide him for the past 10 years?

-The revival thing was dramatic from Miyuki/Tatsuya's POV, but really this seems to be super easy for him. It's actually his base ability.

-Body-guard girl wanting to die doesn't quite make sense either. She didn't seem to resent life. The whole "Let me at least choose how/when to die" only makes sense when the alternative of "Living while obeying someone else" is bad. Didn't seem to be the case, and Tatsuya can revive her whenever anyway.

-Anyway, overall impression is that this seems a little forceful, but I'm up for backstories.

You made me go back to see when I dropped the show, and to my surprise, all the same reasons I ended up hating Aquatope's second cour through the Fall 2021 season were littering this franchise. (Same issues that Remake had, that Tsuki no Laika had, etc.)

At least I'm consistent.

Similar vibe as all the other seasons.

-New characters introduced. Most hate Tatsuya.
-Miyuki gets jealous.
-more background political stuff and towards the end Tatsuya will just nuke them and keep them all at bay or something.

I turn most of my brain off but still watch this because it's easy and I don't have to think about new lore. "Please don't give it another thought" was a great choice of words.

Holy shit did they make the animation look like crap. Knights of Sidonia made it look okay, but it did not elevate the anime.

Mecha and jelly blobs get away with this much more than general humanoids. I mainly watched this show because of the eyecandy and occasional power fantasy fights. :(

I knew I was watching this for OP fights and eyecandy, but I didn't know the eyecandy was going to be the MILF auntie. Not complaining.

I know the first 2 seasons weren't a hit but I enjoyed the first one enough.

This 3rd however is pretty hard on me.
Everyone got so annoying and it's like not a single character developed from what they were the first second the got introduced.

Didn't watch Ep6 yet but I hope the school-contest will be as good as the first one from season one.
That arc was what made me watch the rest of the show.

Maybe I was too blessed with good anime recently that I forgot how bad this actually was?... hmm...
