You can really tell the anime must be close to the manga, because they are really stretching out scenes now...

Nah, Bellamy just got slashed up. Some of the participant introductions/interactions I believe did not take place during that part of the manga, though they would be introduced eventually anyway, so not particularly significant. A lot of them seem like a bunch of nobodies until you find out more about them. There's actually a lot of badasses that are going to be fighting. It kinda reminds me of the Naruto chuunin prelims.

Luffy looked damn funny, in a good way, in the full gear, complemented by the beard. He should get that equipment for himself and use it occasionally.

I have to say remarkably little managed to happen in this episode. They should have run a much longer filler between the arcs.
