I'm a little surprised there's no thread for one of the best shows this summer.

http://david.deals.free.fr/KNIN.jpg

God abandoned the world on Sunday. As a result, nobody in the world can die or reproduce. A little girl, Ai, is the gravekeeper for a village. She has prepared 47 graves for the eventual deaths of every member of the village. Later, a boy who identifies himself as "Hampnie Hambart, the 'Man-eating Toy'," which is coincidentally the name that Ai's mother left behind as the name of her father, arrives in the village and slaughters everybody. Just what is going on?

Probably one of the best shows this season, maybe not stellar, but at least a very good ride.

Have fun!

I was going to make a great thread for this show, one with a picture and more than a single line of impressions, you know, but I guess I can't really blame you since I was so slow to make it.

Nevertheless, despite David's superfluous explanations, I'd call this the surprise show of the season. It's quite unique, quite strong, and quite atmospheric. I decided to watch this based on the PVs that showed a glimpse of that atmosphere. Despite being super cute, the main character girl, very successfully voiced by Toyosaki Aki (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=1438) (Chihaya of Servant X Service, Uiharu of Railgun), is also mentally strong and stays true to her chosen path, no matter how much the world kicks her in the face (and it does a lot). I like that alot (that she stays true, not that the world kicks her in the face). The world is very twisted and I feel like there are still a bunch of mysteries to solve.

MAJOR SPOILER BELOW

It was very surprising that Ai's old man perished so soon, in my opinion. As much as it gave weight to the story and the graveness of the situation in general, I can't help but think it was regrettable. After Ai herself, he was surely the most interesting character so far. I also think it was wicked how it wasn't made immediately evident everybody in the village were already dead and he simply disabled them, but rather was made to look like he slaughtered everybody Ai had ever known.

I knew that everyone in the village was dead from the 1st scene. Their eyes were dull, which is always a sign of death or yan in anime. They weren't yan.

I went WTF when Humbert died. And that is a great thing for someone like me.

I'm sorry for the short descriptions, I'm really not good at explaining myself, so better short than awful/nothing ;)

Do it yourself. You can edit his post, right?

Here is a pic link you can use:

The current description is pretty horrid btw. The last sentence pretty much summarizes it.

It's a tad hard to find a nice picture, that tells enough, without telling too much... and that gives the right feel about the show.
The one posted above doesn't match that much.
There's an atmosphere about the show while watching it, that is difficult to catch in a screenshot.

Edit@Shinta: I didn't want to use that one, don't ask me why, must be my Tsun side :D

Now that I had a look at the first episode, it's indeed true that everybody but Ai and Humbert had dull eyes, instead of reflective ones. Kind of like Misaka Imouto vs Misaka. No doubt I noticed it already when watching the episode for the first time, but since the idea they would be all dead didn't even visit my mind, I subconsciously dismissed the observation.

Ai is so fucking adorable when she's not off running and choosing to do the clearly dumb decisions.

Then she is never adorable?

@David - So instead of the picture with a few other characters in it, you choose the one in which the loli is lying on the ground, with arms spread out and in a daze. This is quite OOC for you.

That can't really be helped. She was the only child in the village, unsurprisingly in that world, and was thus spoiled rotten. She was also early on given an important responsibility, so instead of simply feeling like a child, she also felt she had special authority. As if that wasn't enough, just look at Scar's, a pure gravekeeper's, behavior and it's evident gravekeepers's heads are a bit special on a genetic level.

But it's true I can't help but think something bad is going to happen to Ai when she's so heedlessly wandering around, not suspecting anybody, at least not enough.

That's exactly what I thought.

Ai reminds me most of Kobato (http://myanimelist.net/anime/5678/Kobato.) with her "save the world" personality and pouts of annoyance. The world in general has a very mysterious Letter Bee (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10831) feel to it (more promiment in the Ortus arc) blended in with the travelling elements of Tsubasa Chronicles (http://myanimelist.net/manga/9/Tsubasa_RESERVoir_CHRoNiCLE) (starkly different settings, characters and problems to solve)

It's too bad that the relatively "stock" feel of the character template contrasts with the beautiful backdrops sometimes, but that's just a minor quibble. It only puts me off a little because I can't take it seriously when I have that thought in my mind. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.

The escape from the school was pretty easy. You'd think with 2 men coming to grab her, there'd be at least that many making an effort to keep them there. It sounds like Aki transferred in for the sole purpose of bailing Ai out.

I wonder what happened to Scar. It's hard to think that she'd get abducted given she's good at combat. They're supposed to show up suddenly, so perhaps they get "spirited away" suddenly also.

The school was very weird. It's hard to imagine there would be any government left to pay schools for each student anymore. It was more like the dorm supervisor lady was cracked in the head beyond repair and couldn't let go of the school. But then again, considering the students were all weirdos, it's probable that had something to do with the school existence. The abducting men might have been some hirelings and not present during nights at all. There's not much the lady could have done at that point, considering she had a six-shooter while the dude had an automatic pistol, so assuming he had a full complement of bullets, she would have lost inevitably.

Scar's situation interests me as well. I thought maybe the genuine gravekeepers have short lives and she's nearing the end, but that would fit poorly together with accepting the baby back in the city of the dead.

I'm still wondering what purpose the school arc served. Maybe the only thing about it was getting Alis.
There are lots of nice sceneries, settings, musics and so on. But somehow I feel lost. I wonder if the light novel has a better storytelling.

Yeah. It's true this story doesn't really focus at all. This is more like a tour of that desolate world, displaying how the humans try to live their lives under such strange circumstances. Still, the atmosphere is pretty strong and Ai is so cute that I've had a good time watching this. I've got no complaints about the other characters either, though like said before, Ai's old man dying so soon was a pity.

Considering this episode, I only realised during the last scenes that Scar suddenly running away was perfectly natural, even if a little before I was wondering how she could abandon the baby so easily. But before Yuri's comment about gravekeepers not crying I didn't remember they are devoid of feelings. In that light it's more than natural Scar would be utterly confused and irrational when she suddenly got emotions.

Dee is dead in the real world, and she really wished that the last year of her life could repeat forever and ever.

A classroom shooting, huh... It's awesome how the Japanese won't skirt issues like that.

Dee is dead in the real world, and she really wished that the last year of her life could repeat forever and ever.

Was it Dee's dying wish? Or was it indeed the classroom's wish, when Dee died due to somebody demanding the curtains to be removed leading to Dee's death in the accident? Since Alis said Dee is his enemy and it was through Dee that we saw a possible explanation like that, I guess the safer bet would be Dee, but who knows. Alis should have had plenty of time to ponder the problem from every perspective. But then again, Dee has apparently never told Alis any of that, which might be a part of the reason why Alis considers her an enemy, sensing she's hiding something in addition to wanting to stick the closed space world. Not that you could really blame her of the latter since it's the only place where she's alive.

hmm, the class wish could be a possibility still, yeah. I just wasn't going with it since I thought the entire class forgetting about it kind of shuts all the doors to fixing the situation. In any case I'm expecting Dee to die for real when the class returns to normal.

I think he made the whole witch thing up when he doesn't feel like telling them about the Matrix-classroom.

All in all, that arc was a lot better. I even got a little emotional.
Theme, images, music mesh well.
Really a show you have to watch this season.

I don't get how Ai saved Alis? Alice?

The "twist" doesn't explain why Dee was a ghost in the real world whenever she came outside either.

Maybe she got him out of his grave?
He said he had a proper burial, but it probably wasn't true at all. Explaining why his spirit was still there.

Regarding Dee ghost problem, I guess that since she thought she was dead, the wish acted differently for her.

She didn't "realise" she was dead until after they left 3-4 through the portal and she became a ghost in the real world. Alis, who was really dead was actually okay.

If Alis us currently an undead at the moment, it would be strange that he hasn't shown any signs of degradation after 14 years without medical treatment. That said, for all the talk about "degradation" and all the people in Ai's village seemed pretty normal for me. You really have to wonder if it's necessary to disable them.

It isn't necessary, or even obviously favorable, to disable the undead. Ai's dad was just an ass.

I didn't really remember much of the plot since it was quite some time ago, but the atmosphere and enjoyment was maintained anyway. Well done on all the body-talk, I didn't expect it to work for both genders.
