Japanese: ビビッドレッド・オペレーション

Plot:
Friendship is the key to protecting the world.

That is everyone's wish. Here in a world where science has solved all questions.

This story is set in Oshima. The happy, carefree 14 year old Isshiki Akane lived a poor, but well loved life together with her reliable little sister, Momo, who does all the housework, and her grandfather, Kenjirou, a genius inventor who only created useless devices. When the weather is clear, they can see the artificial island, Blue Island, across the sea. In the center of that island rises the revolutionary Manifestation Engine, a discovery that solved the world's energy problems.

It is a peaceful future, just like everyone dreamed of. One where everyone can smile and be happy...

But suddenly, the world is visited by danger. An unknown enemy, the Alone, appear, targeting the Manifestation Engine. As none of their weapons worked and they fell into despair, a lone girl takes a stand wearing a red "Pallet Suit" which wields a great, hidden power. Before long, allies gather around her to fight.

And their friendship becomes the only hope for saving the world!

^ That's serious what the first half of the show looked like it was about.

Turns out it's more like RinneLangrange/Strike Witches/Symphogear.

Doesn't Nanoha fit better? Look at the mahou shoujo transformation!

Doesn't Nanoha fit better? Look at the mahou shoujo transformation!

It does, and it was the first series that came to my mind. I'm actively trying not to mention that though, because I don't want to grow out of Nanoha. :(

All the (unnecessary) bloomer shots certainly reminded of Strike Witches. However, otherwise this show failed to click for me, at least so far. Maybe I'll still have a look at the second episode, but if it gains my interest no better than this, this will end up as a dropped series.

You'll have to dock!

It more closely resembles Nanoha, largely due to the technological focus (all magic in Nanoha is a product of technology, modern [mid-childan] or ancient [belkan]). Both are like the Clarke quote: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

As such, I rather enjoyed this, while generally ignoring the bloomer shots. The Isshiki family is entertaining. I can't say I will care too much for Aoi, she seemed a bit annoying.

Personal favorite moment: The little sister's minor dismay at stuffing the grandfather's semi-dead body in the refrigerator. The two weren't all that surprised at what he did to himself.

(all magic in Nanoha is a product of technology, modern [mid-childan] or ancient [belkan])

That's not true. If it was, all mages would be precisely as powerful as their device is.

But I'd imagine in this show it's all technology. Though magical technology for sure if it miraculously is more effective against the enemy machine which didn't get even a scratch on its paint from all the missiles and other ordnance.

That's not true. If it was, all mages would be precisely as powerful as their device is.
It's much more complicated (http://nanoha.wikia.com/wiki/Magic) than that, but all devices in the Nanoha universe are machines with an A.I. Some devices are "dumb" (training devices), some are moderately advanced (ancient Belkan ones, Sacred Heart, Bardiche at the high end), some highly advanced (Raising Heart), and some miraculously so (Reinforce).

Mages in Nanoha generate Mana on their own, but they cannot utilize into a cohesive form without a linker core, which is interfaced through programs/spells, with most of the heavy calculations and storage performed by a Device. Devices are like a combination of a capacitor and a ballistics targeting computer.

How strong a particular mage is is dependent on their available mana. That's why Yuuno sucked and couldn't use Raising Heart while Nanoha is a monster. She can generate and send a tremendous amount of mana into her device, and do that repeatedly.

So Nanoha-Magic is a hybrid of innate raw magical power that cannot normally be accessed without technology rapidly speeding up the process, while Vividred (so far) is pure technology. We don't know the mumbo-jumbo behind the Manifestation Engine, but I bet it isn't powered by friendship.

Ryll I'm willing to take that bet just for the lulz factor if it turns out the crazy old grandpa actually did find a way to convert human or particularly loli emotions into manifestable energy. It's not as if the idea is particularly new in the animeverse so it doesn't even feel like a stretch bet. It's too soon to call much of anything about this show for me but I did enjoy the heck out of the zaniness of the first episode so my interest is piqued at the very least. If it turns out to be an expy of Symphogear I think I'd be fine with that, the bad guys already look a lot better than the Noise did at least.

I'm not going to to defend this show regarding that, it is pretty bad. It is without doubt the demographic they're going for, while pretending to be a kids show.

edit:

/me sighs with resignation

The subtext is even stronger in the second episode.

The lead's weapon is a boomerang that, I shit you not, is called (in English), "Naked Rang."
...and the other girl's is a hammer, called (also in English), "Naked Impact."

Wtf.
