I was just thinking to myself that he really needs to come up with some new character types because we have seen these before and we know how this turns out.

Not necessarily, but as a group they are more powerful than all of the Gotei 13.

Probably because they know of some state beyond the Bankai, which they will teach Ichigo. That or Ishida will teach him some energy manipulation bulshit which will let him put the bankai back together.
