I feel Zetsuen and R;N deserved better and that Chuunibyou deserved way less. Still happy to see Jojo and Jormungand up there though.

Psycho pass is an original so the sales might still increase once people start making sense of the plot.

I reckon KyoAni otaku are similar to Apple zombies and would buy anything from their overlord. Anyway, I hope Psycho-Pass will rise and thus encourage more similar shows in the future. God knows we could use more series with non-school settings and adult main characters.

Edit: Oh, a good thing I paid attention to who made this thread. My mouse pointer was already moving toward the Moderation tools to delete the thread as soon as I saw "preorder" and "sales" in a thread topic...

Shinsekai is and deserves better than most of that list, but better has always been victim to popular choice.

Panzer and Darkness deserve to be completely annihilated from existence.

Panzer and Darkness deserve to be completely annihilated from existence.

I never agreed so much with you before.
Loli and crappy 3d cgi deserves to be punished by law.

Chuunibyou on the other hand - even though I tend to go for darker shows, I enjoy quite too much - it has an appeal even with the mature austere audience that I am.
I personnaly feel JJBA should be on top of the charts - have you seen the quality of the OP - and JJBA is no new name to the industry - I wished it had a wider fanbase to prop it up higher in the charts. (Or it won't get renew I guess)

Darkness deserve to be completely annihilated from existence.
There's a reason TLR~D pre-orders are so high. You can't watch the series at all otherwise.

Arch is too harsh on Chuunibyou. It's entertaining (far more than KyoAni's recent projects), and that's all that matters. I have no idea changed Arch from a fan of KyoAni shows to hating them unconditionally (I'm going to guess he's too easily influenced by the tendency of online groups hating whatever tends to be popular with average viewers).

Ultimately, sales figures and pre-orders don't mean jack. Chihayafuru did horrible, but is still getting another season. Durarara did well, and we're very unlikely to see another season at this point.

Yes and no. In the bigger picture they do. Studio can only animate as long as it makes the ends meet (or even profit). If one show gets bigger sales, it can balance out things with another that doesn't pay its own bills (but might have been artistically more satisfying and meaningful for the creators). But in the end the studio will always need shows that bring money more than they eat to be able to take risks. So, the figures do matter, even if not exactly show by show specifically. I don't have anything in particular against moe shows, I have enjoy some of them, but even those that hate them, should tolerate them as cash cows for the studios to fund worthier projects.

I'll be happy as long as GGO is animated. A movie is preferable because it allows for a larger animation budget.

I am sick of Dog Days so please let it end.

It's great that Horizon is up there. The battle sequences in the 2nd season are some of the best ever made.

Oh, right. In that case:

1) The first two columns are rankings. What's the dates for each of those? Are they a week/month apart?

2) How are the points calculated? I can't see any correlation between them, the rankings or the preorders (last column).

Archangel
Tue, 11-06-2012, 05:50 AM
1) Dunno, who gives a shit? First row is for current ranking, second is for previous ranking that was measured whenever.

2) 1 pt per preorder or sale of a the volume in question. It doesn't translate into profit directly though, you'd always have to multiplicate by the value of said volume.

Shinsekai and Zetsuen... I cannot believe it.

Actually I do. It is something that one should expect from the country that created K-ON, and much worse, its descendents.

I bet the only reason Psycho Pass is there is because of the hype due to Urobuchi's involvement.

I have no idea why K is doing so well. Which demographic is buying it?

Even Code Breaker is doing better, even if not by much. I couldn't keep watching the anime of Code Breaker either. I dropped the manga because it was so immature in all the wrong ways. It was the same with the anime adaptation, after all. So, I'm not unhappy to see it sell humbly. It's really too bad about Shinsekai. I suppose it's too complicated for the usual audience that's mainly interested in moe and single-minded shounen action. I really wish Girls und Panzer wasn't leading the flock, though. It's good something is selling well bringing money to the studios, but the cash cow being a show like that is sad.

It's okay though, really. It isn't like we're getting an incomplete story with Shinsekai Yori. It's only one book.

We don't have to hopelessly wait for a sequel.

Though it is a depressing reflection of Japan. While we might get fewer "smart" series, replaced by even more paint-by-numbers eroge adaptations, 4-koma moeblob fests, and a stream of mediocre light novels, but some series like this achieve cult status later. Then we get another one, and the cycle continues.

It is something that one should expect from the country that created K-ON and, much worse, its descendents.

K-ON in and of itself wasn't bad. It's the idea that studious should then make copies of it for every season that gave it a bad name.

I was going to watch Panzer, but the first episode had frames skipping on me, so I easily gave up.

Does box-art and displayability have a big factor in sales? I wouldn't know how many Japanese watchers know how to access their shows online, but they would have watched the show once already on TV regardless. At the same time, I can't imagine that a feverish anime fan would have too much time to rewatch the series he buys when new ones keep pouring out.

We are talking about guys who still build birthday shrines to K-ON characters, and god only knows how many other moeblobs that struck their fancy. If they have time for that, they have time for everything.

I'm actually surprised Shinsekai made the chart.

It's the kind of anime that appeal to a very small demographic and the first half of the show is decent at best, it didn't start getting good until the later part.

Psycho-pass did great, so i'm hoping for more futuristic/cyberpunk stuff.

I didn't think there was anyone who still care about Hayate no Gotoku since the anime is so inconsistent, but i guess once something get popular it'll keep selling.

I´m not that knowledgeable about actual current day Japanese culture, so: Is this really otakus buying that shit, or is it simply due to masses of children/little girls buying that crap? Similar to how Skylanders is doing well in the west, but no actual videogame nerd is buying these games.

I mean ... come on. :/

Check the prices of Japanese anime DVDs/BDs. They are so bloody expensive few kids would have the money. It's the otaku. The business made a long time ago a decision to rip lots of money off a limited audience rather than trying to appeal to a wider audience with lower prices (like they/local licensees tried in the West).

I guess live idol stuff is a bit different, though, since it seems to have a much bigger audience. But even so it has otaku who buy a hundred copies of the same CD to get a handshaking ticket... Maybe some of those fools also buy animated idol stuff.

That's great news.

That'll teach those people at KyoAni for trying something different. They should just go back to making a new copy of K-On every season if they want to do well. More importantly, no studio should try to do anything new ever and should just stick to making moe since that's the only thing that'll sell.

This is something we should all celebrate.

Tue, 07-09-2013, 08:48 PM
Nope, i hate it. That doesn't mean that i would prefer the alternative. It didn't fail because it was bad, it failed because it's a sport anime.

It's just mean that only something amazing like Giant Killing have a chance of actually selling well. Anything average will probably not see the light of day. Overall, it's just bad for anime in general when sales encourages studios to not innovate.

Buffalobiian
Tue, 07-09-2013, 08:48 PM
I haven't seen Free! yet, but from what I've been exposed to, I do hope that it is at least somewhat successful. Anime lately has been criticised for not engaging a wide enough audience like it used to (quite true, really), and it'd be great to start reversing this trend.

(Assuming it is a moe-for-girls show)

shinta|hikari
Tue, 07-09-2013, 09:01 PM
I actually watched it, and it was horrible. I watch some bishounen shows if they are actually good, but this was just bad. This had less (if any) comedy than the usual moe show too, and that is saying something.

I am all for studios trying to produce new stuff, but Free! is not it. Moe for girls (bishounen) shows are also nothing new, and has several entries each season. What KyoAni did is simply change the gender of their target audience, but it is still moe focused. Better bishounen shows actually make the male characters seem a bit more realistic, and not cookie cutter. I am no expert at this genre, but Kuroshitsuji, Hakuoki, and Saiunkoku Monogatari are much better than this. I think the key difference is those shows actually tried to tell a story, and not just moefy its audience.

I think they should find something more serious that requires great direction and animation and produce that (FMP).

It may also be possible for them to do Utsuro no Hako, Zero no Maria, considering they managed Haruhi and Hyouka.

Why not a war story, like Madan no Ou to Vanadis?

Yeah, Free! is such a great change.

Dark Dragon
Tue, 07-09-2013, 09:13 PM
I understand what you're saying.

The important thing here isn't the quality of Free!. It's been proven time and time again that the quality of something doesn't often correlate to sales.

What i'm seeing is that a fairly successful studio (KyoAni) creating an anime from a fairly popular genre (sport) with a fairly popular niche (boy love) and still can't produce any sort of decent sales number. That just seems very troubling for even less popular genre and less known studio.

This kind of numbers just give less incentive for studios to try something different.

Ryllharu
Tue, 07-09-2013, 09:14 PM
It was kinda a miracle KyoAni even did Tamako Market (an original work) after they got burned so many times on Munto. I suspect they only made it because being moe slice of life, it was a safe bet with the staff mostly being from K-ON or Lucky Star (usually both).

They can do action series fine. Munto wasn't a hit, but was well done, and so were the action sequences of Chuunibyou (fantasy action) and obviously FMP:TSR.

They'll just never take the financial risk again.

shinta|hikari
Tue, 07-09-2013, 09:30 PM
I actually think a moe focused show, regardless of the target gender, doing badly is a good thing.

It might actually shock the studio to do something other than moe.

Inazuma
Thu, 07-11-2013, 05:59 AM
I think I heard at some point that the episode budget for Free! is the same as Cowboy Bebop's.

The homo undertone and the absolute focus on drawing muscles for proper female masturbation material is there. You can hate it, you can love it. It doesn't change that it feels bland nonetheless and that the main OCD driven character has less comedy output than Death the Kid.

This season has been full of potential, but there is a SERIOUS quality issue.
SNK, Gargantia, Free! and others are suffering from a ridiculousy large quality production issues.

Making Moe is like making a certain type of car, if you fail miserably you might want to change segments, or next time you stay in your field but you make a product that actually isn't worse than smallpox.

shinta|hikari

Okay, so I watched episode 2 of Free! and it wasn't so bad. If you can look past the overwhelming fanservice and the annoying kid with the condescending painfully forced effeminate voice, there were some funny bits and a decent slice of life aspect. It really is K-ON for fujoshi.

It's too bad Mushibugyo is all the way down there. It is typical shounen with bad art, but it is better than some of the slice of life stuff above it.

I'm obvious annoyed by Mondaiji doing so badly. Although Hataraku doing so well is an even bigger outrage. I have a long time ago given up trying to understand why Oreimo excels in sales. If nothing else, these sales figures do remind me that the Japanese truly is alien culture to me, no matter how much anime/manga I consume or how much random RL news I read from there.

Mondaiji girls are too strong and independent for them to be liked by the Japanese.

There really isn't, it's well below the Manabi line.

Well, for such a project and the horrible rotoscopy idea, of course they would'nt sell much.
But they still managed to not get last position.

I was no table to adapt to jinsei, too tiring so I got bored.
Nozaki-kun is a lot easier to laugh to.

I dropped Jinsei after the first episode. It was deadly boring. I guess it tried to be funny, but trying was as far as it got.

Nozaki-kun is undoubtly one of the best shows this season, so I'm happy it's doing well on the charts.

Not bad, it's BS that Shokugeki is below Bleach but it's to be expected when it has such a solid fanbase by now.

I wonder if Chihayafuru might actually get a third season, since it made it to the list. You'd think the anime itself had sold some as well, considering it did get two seasons of two cours, no less.

Let's hope the anime will boost its popularity above the likes of Bleach.
