"The story centers around five Japanese high school students who are too young to be called adults, but who no longer think of themselves as children. Sakai Wakana once took music lessons, but she withdrew from music after losing her mother. Miyamoto Konatsu is a positive-thinking girl who loves singing and spends time after school at the vocal music club. Okita Sawa is a spirited archery club member who dreams of becoming a horse rider. Tanaka Taichi is a chronically late badminton team member who lives with his college student sister. Wien just transfered into Wakana's class after 12 years abroad in Australia. Music brings Wakana, Konatsu, Sawa and the others together into an ensemble during their last summer in high school." -ANN

This looks like some kind of mix of K-ON and Hanasaku Iroha. The character designer is from Hanasaku Iroha, which is why I threw it here, plus the atmosphere also has some of the same energy, it's also animated by the same PA Works. K-ON I put there because of the music theme. The main cast is: Miyamoto Konatsu by Seto Asami (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=21733) (Chihaya of Chihayafuru), Sakai Wakana by Takagaki Ayahi (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=411) (Feldt Grace of Gundam 00, Nina Antalk of Regios), Okita Sawa by Hayami Saori (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=2296) (Azuki Miho of Bakuman, Ikaros of Sora no Otoshimono), Tanaka Taichi by Shimazaki Nobunaga (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=10776) (Kirishima Kaito of Ano Natsu, Assassin of F/Z), and Wien by Hanae Natsuki (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=31313) (nothing worth mentioning). Wien (or whatever is his real name since it wasn't even mentioned in the first ep) is a strange fellow, and while they speak of Austria instead of Australia in the episode, he's so out of everything that I wouldn't be surprised if it in fact wasn't an error in the description but a mistake the character made in the story.

All in all this show seems to be for those who would enjoy a slice of life school show centered around a music club (I reckon) with comedy and a spectrum of very different characters, both girls and guys, with reasonable good production values. A part of me is sad this had to be a high school show since I enjoyed the very different setting of Hanasaku Iroha greatly, but all in all after the first ep this at least looks more interesting than something based solely on moe like K-ON. The weird transfer student who's apparently been using a book written centuries ago to learn Japanese manners is quite hilarious.

The female characters surprised me. I don't think I've seen a show where so many of them use a deeper voice for their character. Normally it's reserved for the stereotypical "hard" or cool girl. I would say it's refreshing and keeps me interested (also makes it slightly harder for me to identify the speaker by voice and match a name to it), but I have to say it also sounds just a little monotonous.

Maybe I'm just comparing it to the much more wacky characters of Hanasaku Iroha. I smiled when I saw that the left wing of the school looks so similar of the left part of the Inn from that show.

So far, I rather like the equestrian girl. And the cat. Damn adorable fat cats.

It wasn't a bad song and composition. I'm beginning to wonder how the two dudes fit together with the main girls, though. Quite a nondescript show all in all, but I'll keep watching, for now, for the occasional music and some of the characters.

So you guys did not recognize one of the True Tears OP couplet sung by the main choir in ep one?

I guess it's the thing keeping me watching for the moment. I wonder how it connects. (PA works I guess?)

And I preferred the True Tears ED anyway. Sekai no Namida is still one of my favorite songs.

I didn't watch True Tears, it's in the backlog somewhere.

This episode felt like it should have been a final episode given how the stage preparation played out.

The song was nice, but the anime overall's a bit flat without too much of a catch or focus.

I would have dropped it had it not been for PA Works and Sawa.

I haven't watched 6 yet but I am finding this show remarkably watchable despite a sense that while not much is happening what is happening is rich enough to be engaging. I am getting tired of Wakana's waffling though, but it seems like she'll have to stop it soon and I look forward to that.

I put this show on ice for the duration of my vacation, but now I watched 3-6 back to back. And I'm feeling ashamed of mentioning K-ON in the first post. This show has so much more depth than that moe fest and caricature of a music show. Maybe it's just due to the music so inherent to the story, but this feels even deeper than Hanasaku Iroha. Music is just that powerful an element. The "too young to be called adults, but who no longer think of themselves as children" line from the description is crystal clear at this point. The characters all have their ambitions, solid or wavering, but are still locked in their roles as kids hampering their progress toward them. Or they just otherwise lack the maturity to process their troubles in an effective manner, which pretty much held Wakana totally back until now.

I really like this show and the characters. The songs and music are nice as well, and I hope there will be even more of them in the future eps. Humour has been pretty nice as well, including the weird band of geezers.

I'm damn glad I didn't make the error of dropping this after acquiring the backlog.

For me the show is nice and thought-provoking enough (Wakana's scenario makes me reflect on my actions, for one) to watch, but also fails to make me crave it every week. I'm not sure how much the latter should be used to judge a show since I've seen plenty of good anime without that factor, but it's certainly the most immediately evident reaction.

Interestingly enough that's true for me as well, despite liking this. It's also one reason why I never considered watching this during my vacation, unlike some other shows. I watched 3-6 back to back because I sensed Wakana's case to come to a conclusion, but now that it's over, I even felt the show could have ended there. Sure, I will keep watching, but I feel no urgency to watch the eps as soon as they are out.

She played her cards really badly. Not eating anything for a couple of days (?) and arguing with her parents to the point of hating them right before the trial. I wouldn't be surprised if she couldn't sleep either. She was ruining her own chances by herself more than her obstinate father did.

Wakana went through quite a personality change. That was amusing.

I'm looking forward to seeing the white rhino, in any case.

I wonder if they were hinting the vice-principal during her school days was first convinced by Wakana's mom to join a choir (or some other singing club), but then Mahiru suddenly left to continue on her own, leaving the vice-principle behind and confused. Certainly such a thing wouldn't be the only factor developing her so unpleasant as a person, but it might have reinforced the characteristic.

Quite a nice episode all in all. Vienna should get the grand piano tuned; the place was certainly splendid for practice, should the need ever arise again.

That's a possibility.

The scenario I had in mind was more simple: that the Vice Principal was simply stating that despite Wakana's mum saying she needed to do music with people, she didn't really need those around her and excelled at her own breakneck pace anyway.

Japanese monks are funny. They don't have to pay tax (from what I've heard) and take a much more pragmatic roll by providing religious services without having to act like a saint themselves.

This show is growing more and more on me episode after episode. I really like the characters, all of them, and also the occasional funny plots, like in this episode. It felt really natural how everybody but Vienna was doubtful of the brightness of the idea of playing heroes in costumes, but gradually Vienna managed to get them over their hesitation and embarrassment with his enthusiasm. But damn, we didn't get to see the girls in tight hero uniforms yet...

Yeah. Konatsu might be brusque enough to do it, but with her petite body I don't see why. Wakana seems like the serious type so it's hard to imagine her being so careless. Sawa, however, is large enough just in the right places to cause such an accident easily with a suit meant for young lads.

I know I would be shocked into silence if a group of power rangers appeared and started singing at me. That was pretty awesome.

Turns out Green doesn't have a skirt, befittingly.

Mon, 09-03-2012, 07:03 AM
Green had nice curves to show without the skirt. Although to be honest I think the girls looked better in suits with a skirt, so maybe Green should have had such as well.

The singing around the thief part was awesome indeed. No wonder the dude has wtf plastered on his face and couldn't decide what to do. Although Vienna still had to taste his own blood prior to that.

It didn't look too promising the construction dudes were measuring the grounds. I wonder what exactly is going to happen.

Buffalobiian
Mon, 09-03-2012, 08:48 AM
The skirts make them look more feminine, which makes sense since it's Yellow and Pink we're talking about. I have to wonder if it'd translate well to Sawa though, since she's so much taller and larger than the rest of the girls. Her figure also means that a skirt would increase the overall bulk of her hips.. for better or worse.

The scene certainly explained a lot though. Last week I was wondering at how Wakana could say "Sawa your figure is good, you'll be fine" without worrying about herself when she's less gifted in that department (since I assumed her suit didn't have a skirt either). It made it sound like Sawa was particularly vain compared to the other two girls (but since I consider her behaviour to be normal, that would mean it was Wakana who was unnaturally uncaring about all this).

As for the construction, I guess the Chairman decided to tear the school down and build something else instead that rakes in more cash.

It wasn't overly hard to imagine it was the worst case possibility with the principal and vice-principal acting like they did. Still it was a shock to me that even the cultural festival was cancelled due to it. Quite an insult. I'm glad Konatsu won't take it without a fight, even if she needed a little push from Wakana.

After suffering through another episode of Muv-Luv it sure feels good to watch the all-around high quality of this show. Even all the little things and details work so well.

I knew Taichi would end up having more pride/guts or even jealousy to try out drawing himself instead of taking the secret photo.. but damn Sawa fanservice! I do hope it turns out into a romantic pairing in the end (perhaps if it was a post-timeskip thing it'd seems less abrupt), even if this show is more about supporting friendships and moving forward through difficulties/uncertainties more than anything else.

Kraco
Mon, 09-10-2012, 09:12 AM
Yeah, that was very nice service, and I won't blame Taichi for forgetting to take the photo after seeing it. They have very limited time left (not the series but their high school), so it wouldn't necessarily be so abrupt, although naturally a few things would need to happen. And it doesn't help neither seems to be thinking of such romantic things (in fact absolutely no one of their group is); they are both engrossed in their future studies/career dreams. In that sense this show is very different compared to Hanasaku.

Vienna seems like a multi-talented person, despite being so strange otherwise. Or perhaps it's precisely because of that.

This is heading to an unnecessarily overdramatic ending with the capitalist pig dictating everything the school can and can't do. It was also funny how he imagines he's creating goodwill in the community by cancelling the cultural festival.

Oh, well, it was still a pretty good episode, despite the unnecessary elements robbing time from more worthy things. It was nice how Taichi was such an honest dude he deemed the only proper way is to ask Sawa directly. Sawa agreeing was practical as well, even if it's a bit creepy some strange dude wanted pics of her.

Buffalobiian
Mon, 09-17-2012, 07:24 AM
I guess she felt that as long as Taichi took the photo and they made sure it looked good, then it was alright. If you think about the fact that everybody in the school gets a photo of you if they bought the graduation magazine or something, then it doesn't seem quite as creepy.

She probably believed in Taichi's character too, and thought that he wouldn't ask for a picture unless he had no other way.

I was amused that she wanted the shot taken from above so she didn't look big. Self-conscious Sawa <3.

Hmm, they managed to end this series like how it started - no strings attached. I don't feel sad that this finished, but at the same time it doesn't mean it was bad.

Wakana's song didnt sound as good as her mum's (which is as it should be I guess..), but some parts sounded like they were taken straight out of Melody of the Heart, which felt a little weird.

The final scene with Wakana didn't seem to make a point. We know she's older, and she's happy.. but that's it. I suppose taking life easy was one of the messages her mum left her, but it wasn't clear.

Glad Sawa and Tanaka got to advance, even if we don't know how far they ultimately got.

I really liked this show. I was hoping for more focus on Wakana, but I guess since it's only 13 episodes you'd have to give all 5 characters some focus. Like buff said, I wasn't sure what the point of that final scene was for. You almost couldn't really tell Wakana got older. I too wished that we could have heard what Sawa and Taichi were talking about.

The ending dealt with the final conflict, but there really wasn't any aftermath. I thought there were a few loose ends here and there. I hope that there will be an OAV to touch up on things or even a season 2.

I have to share all the above sentiments. I really liked this show, mainly for the characters and for the little bit of music. However, oddly enough it hardly created any emotional attachment. I don't feel much now that it's over, even though I would have liked to feel something more.

This ending was quite a mixed thing. It was basically good, and it was nice to see the five were able to move forward and pull off their plans, but with no romance or anything of that sort, it was still kind of "okay, so that's all, folks" ending of limited meaningfulness. It's like after a little shaking of hands they all went their own ways, possibly to never meet again. That's how it usually is, especially after high school, but in fiction it could be a bit more emotional.
