Monitor Tips/Suggestions

Looking to get a new PC monitor, and was wondering if any of you guys might have any suggestions on what to get?

Primary purpose would be for gaming, secondary movies/anime etc.

Read alot of different things regarding IPS displays, some say they're simply awesome on all accounts, others say they might not be optimal for gaming, and since i have no actual experience with them, perhaps someone here has?

I have the ASUS VE276Q (27 inch) and I absolutely love it. Use it for gaming and watching anime/movies/tv series. Quality is excellent and the picture is brilliant. Would highly recommend this monitor if it's for gaming and watching stuff.

I have the Asus VE248H Black 24" 1920X1080 2ms Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers. Great monitor for $200. I'd say get an LED LCD because I had a 24" Asus non-LED and the difference is significant for the additional $30.

Yah i do think i'll go for LED backlighting, i'm also considering going for a 1920x1200 widescreen, seems like the extra screenspace would be quite nice.

Sure, there are 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 res ones, but the price for that jumps up pretty high :p

The main thing people will comment about is the response time. Unfortunately I haven't tried an IPS panel myself.

If you have your own speakers, I won't bother paying for speakers. They're shit and a waste of space IMO. 16:10 monitors are rarer these days, and seem to only be produced for the "business/productivity" style monitors. It's a pity because I find the extra height useful.

Give us a size and budget to work with. Do you need 3D?

The one I mentioned is a 1920x1200 widescreen, just saying ;)

Been reading up abit on various monitors whenever i've had downtime at work the last week.

I think 27 inch monitors seem a bit too big for 1080p res compared to 23-24" ones (same res, only "stretched" to 27" instead of 23-24"), if i'm going to get a 27 i'd rather wait until some company makes a better 2560x1440 res one, because the current ones with that res seem to be quite bad for gaming.

Might be nice to get a 120hz monitor though, and while i couldn't care less about the 3D part of it, i've read pretty high praise from people using the 120hz for significantly "smoother" gaming (and for general use/surfing and whatnot aswell).

I've come to think that 1650x1020 as being optimal for a 22" monitor. I would have thought that a 24" would sit in the middle, and that a 1920x1200 would have been nice at 27".

I'd like a nice 120Hz monitor too, except my desk won't accommodate for it at 22".

For gaming, you should be more concerned about input lag than the pixel response time. It's never rated or shown in the specs so you have to rely on user reviews.

Yeah i've noticed that... pretty damn annoying that they don't put input lag in the product specifications >_>
