Themes: Music

Plot Summary: Since the dawn of time, humanity has been threatened by the disaster called "Noise". When it occurs, people die, and there are no countermeasures. Except one...

The top-secret Symphogear System, capable of eliminating Noise, has been deployed in Japan. Unknown to the general public, a pair of girls wielding Symphogears strive relentless to protect society from the ravages of Noise. It would surprise people even more to know that their protectors are none other than chart-topping singing duo "Zwei Wing", Amou Kanade and Kazanari Tsubasa.

Tachibana Hibiki and Kohinata Miku are two normal girls just enrolling in Lydian Private Music Academy. There, they meet Kanade and Tsubasa and become involved in the struggle against Noise.

The whole singing reminded me too much of Macross Frontier but without the mecha's or better looking CG aliens.

That "description" in the first post pretty much spoils the entire first episode. ANN are a bunch of idiots, but do we really need to copy it here too? AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=8709)'s description is much better.

I don't know if I'd go with Macross Frontier. Maybe Macross 7 would be more appropriate. I got more of a Madoka/Saikano vibe from it. Nanoha Force influences too because of the grimdark vibe (though a lot of that might be the reused sfx...no complaints from me about those though :D).

I had watched the PV, so I knew what to expect from the rest of the episode, but the first 30 seconds of the episode sold me on the series. The direction of that segment was extremely well done. You caught the mood immediately, and the sound of that intense downpour combined with the devastated landscape hit hard. This series might skimp on the animation a bit, but the sound direction excels.

The songs were good, the action was over the top and amusing (with the titled attacks no less), and the characters are quirky. The Noise are definitely weird looking, and the bright colors offset the threat they pose. But once you see the ash floating in the air, it's fairly unnerving. One minute everything is somewhat okay, and the next, everyone isn't just dead, they're gone.

This is one of the most promising series I've seen so far this season.

I enjoyed the beginning of it too, scenes showing the city were great.. but i don't understand - why they opened up the roof, when they KNEW that enemy can attack from the air?
Noise looked at first as some weird thing, not necessary harmful...but when people started turning into dust - it was well done.

P.S.
i don't understand japs obsession with light sticks on concerts? what's the point?

Do "Japs" (derogatory term) really have an obsession with glow sticks in particular? A lot of people over in the US seem to love glow sticks, especially during Halloween.

It's definitely something you notice on Youtube clips of Japanese concerts. The majority of the concert goers all have glowsticks, and they all wave them in sync to the songs. It's kinda bizzare coming from this side of the pond, but I suppose for a culture that queue up in MMOs...it's not so unusual that they would be so orderly.

I thought the concert scene was a perfect example of how Japanese pop starlet concerts look and feel. Look up a clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eveaH342_X8) of Mizuki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz4UOoJiEeo) Nana live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31N26WoHHsc) (since she's one of the two singers here), it's pretty much the same.

I did not like the music/songs
I did not like the art
I was bored all the ep
I thought it was generic and low quality to my eyes

I guess you understand it's not my thing.

Kanade dying got zero emotional points from me. I think it's for a variety of reasons:

1) Her character overall gave me the impression of a brute (particularly attack style, as well as the hair colour/style)
2) Her voice kept obscuring Mizuki Nana's in the songs.
3) I never liked giant spears like hers. Traditional spears, sure, but not since Erio (http://nanoha.wikia.com/wiki/Erio_Mondial) put me off that type (because I dislike him in general too)

The wonky dance movements that made the arms look like jelly were simply weird. I have no idea how the studio would think otherwise when they reviewed it.

I'm only half expecting Tsubasa to have a possible grudge against Hibiki.

Despite what I've said above as well as Kanade's fighting-song not sounding as polished as Tsubasa's, but it actually sounded as if she was fighting/running while she sang. The fight + singing gave off a sense of difficulty - as if she needed to maintain the tempo and tonal accuracy in order to stayed powered-up. Tsubasa's was more polished, but felt much more like your usual anime-song-layered-over-a-fight than being an integral part of it.

While less "cool" to the ears, Kanade's performance matched the idea of having to sing even while you were coughing up blood.

"Japs" (derogatory term)

It depends..

Jap is an English abbreviation of the word "Japanese." Today it is generally regarded as an ethnic slur, although English-speaking countries differ in the degree to which they consider the term offensive. In the United States, Japanese Americans have come to find the term controversial or offensive, even when used as an abbreviation. In the past, Jap was not considered primarily offensive; however, during and after the events of World War II, the term became derogatory.

In Singapore and Hong Kong, the term is used freely as a contraction of the adjective "Japanese" rather than as a derogatory term. The Brazilian equivalent japa is also non-derogatory (although widely considered a slang term) and sometimes used in mass media and by Japanese Brazilian population itself. The Australian news service Asia Pulse also uses the term. In 1970, the Japanese fashion designer Kenzo Takada opened the "Jungle Jap" boutique in Paris.

I've seen Asian concerts televised. Glowsticks are pretty much the norm. Pop a stick and wave it to the music~

Glowsticks have less of a monopoly there though compared to the Japanese concerts, but more illuminated fan-made signs and all.

Imagine it like rocking side to side when a slow-ish song plays.
Then the guy next to you rocks at the same pace.
Then you pop some glow sticks.
Then stop caring about whether the song's fast or slow.. and there you have it. :)

I have no idea where you're getting number 2 from. If anything it was the other way around. Takayama Minami (Kanade) and Mizuki Nana (Tsubasa) both have rather deep singing voices. Through most of the concert song, any time they were singing in harmony, Mizuki Nana was overpowering her.

Overall, I think the two of them really complimented each other. Takayama Minami has a sharper voice, while Mizuki Nana's range generally overpowers and uses way more vibrato. They each covered the gaps of the other. It was a really good casting choice. Maybe second only to Horie Yui and Toyosaki Aki playing completely believable sounding twins in Otome Youkai Zakuro.

Now if it is just because you're a Mizuki Fanboy...never watch this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyYLAcCWsjM). :p

The primary reason there was no emotional points for Kanade's death was we never really got to know her. That said, I liked her performer smile better than Tsubasa's.

For it to have bigger impact they would need to spend some more time on her - preferably at least one full episode.. and make us like her too. I was also disappointed by the spear's design.

If music is fast you jump and bang your head, if slow you do more relaxed movements.. waving your hand with glowstick reminds me of elementary school kids waving their hands at in-school party or something. it is just awkward. Same thing with cellphones on concerts....
but well they do form queues in MMOs which is weird enough..(as Ryll pointed out)

Mark that down to two reasons then.

True. All I can say is that I'd have been sadder if Tsubasa died. It wouldn't have felt right though, since she's the "lesser" of the two.

While I'm not Norwegian rather Swedish the languages are close enough to understand each other but honestly I can't make out anything similar to our language even though I replayed it over and over again, then again it'd be weird if they had perfect pronunciation. Though pretty sure Kanade said Gungnir before she transformed in what I guess is suppose to be Norwegian.

This episode is win for hilariously bad lolwut-Class Engrish. Especially when you compare it to the translation of the Japanese text (in Commie's version, Getwet made sense of the Engrish instead). I struggle to remember Engrish this bad from 90s anime.

As for the rest of it, relatively obvious twists. Ryouko betraying them isn't really that much of a surprise. She's been kind of sketchy since the disaster that got Kanade killed.

It was funny that most of Hibiki's training seems to be based on video games and kung-fu movies.

Yuuki Aoi's (Hibiki) singing is still pretty bad...

Hibiki "learning how to fight" was a pretty funny understatement when you can punch a sandbag off its fixture.
