O wow! When did this happen? Great stuff. For future reference, which fan-sub groups would you guys recommend for this season's shows?
@Arch, if you've never seen the original, I can't say anything about this one, as I haven't even seen the first episode yet, but the original was quite a trip, and one of my favorite all time shows. You should give it a shot.
Quoted from below: Ryllharu@Arch if you don't have me on ignore (pretty sure you do!): I don't think it will make much of a difference. I saw the old Last Exile years ago, and remember vague details about the main cast. This didn't make that many references to it. They are there though, and at least one character shows characteristics they developed at the end of the first series. I honestly don't think GONZO has any clue how this series is supposed to relate to the first, but it is treated like a sequel.
It'll help, but I do not think watching the first series is essential.

-----------------
Regarding the episode:
As always, I love Murata Range's character designs. On the one hand they are ornate (the princesses), and on the other hand they do wonders with simplicity and clothing with clean lines (Fam, Jizel and the rest of the pirates).
Fam and Jizel are an excellent duo. Fam is a free-spirited moron (perfectly played by Toyosaki Aki) and Jizel is her shy but diligent counter-balance. A great combination of a risk-taking pilot and cautious navigator. Even if Fam totally controls what they do because Jizel just does what Fam tells her to. But Fam's got some smarts too though, since it was her plan that saved the Princesses' flagship with minimal harm. If ever there was a single scene to perfectly sum up a character for a great first impression, it's Fam just randomly hanging from the window, oblivious that her underwear is showing, saying "Uwah! Check it out! Real life princesses!"
I'm also glad Dio is living more carefree. We'll see how the two princesses fit into this mess, aside from the elder one having a possible romantic connection to the male antagonist (with customary eye-patch).
Nice OP. Always enjoy a good Sakamoto Maaya song. I was ambivalent towards the ED.
edit: That does bring to mind one concern. Why is Fam wearing a skirt if she's a vanship (or vespa) pilot? They wear thick coats because it's cold up in the clouds. She's got thick coat, thick boots, but wears a dress. At least Jizel appears to wear thick leggings/tights. Fam has stockings held up by garters.

@Arch
Pretty much what Lucifus and Ryll said. This series has references here and there to the original, but it can be watched as a standalone really well. It takes place 2 years after the original but... I think its safe as it is.
@Lucifus
I watched Whine-subs since it was the only group that had subbed it at the moment. When I finished, Commie came up. Neither are favorites of mine... but when there's no source I go with the less worse. Whine had quite the mistakes, like typing scared instead of sacred when talking about the lake. I'm getting Commie's version right now to see which ranks better. Seems only small or new groups are doing this series so far.
@Ryll
Like Lucifus, I loved the original series... but is has been so long I too don't remember much of it. I also love the character designs... it was draw me into Last Exile in the first place. The girls, Fam and Giselle, do look a bit younger than how the characters of the 1st series looked, even if they are in the same range of age. But it doesn't look bad nor off
I must say I didn't notice Fam was wearing a skirt until you mentioned. And I normally watch all this details. Damn.
I also loved how Dio acted now. The Immelman turn brought back good memories.
Also... updated 1st post with the Opening MP3

Great, all the main characters are young girls. I wonder how long till that gets annoying.
Oh well, at least there's still CGI sky battleships blowing up.

I noticed the skirt right from the beginning since Fam was stripping it off. Didn't notice that her underwear was showing when her leg was through the window however.
Talking about that, the first scene was one of my favourite - that Giselle keeps Fam on a leash/rope. And the ears on their earmuffs. :3
The princesses (both of them, but particularly Lily) give off Releena Peacecraft vibes so badly..
I can always do with a good steampunk.

I suspect it's closer to the original series than what has been stated. When Dio is shown he notes the return of someone, and we see Exile appearing in the atmosphere. I fully expect to see Claus by episode 5.

I haven't watched Commie's version yet. I have it at 60% because I downloaded other things first. I'll probably watch episode 2 with them though. I've seen other show with them and, while not perfect, they don't make the kind of mistakes Whine-subs did. So yeah... I'll stick with Commie unless another group picks it up.

Commie seems to be late this week. Meanwhile Whine-Subs has partened with another not-known group called Subsfuckingwhere and has re-released episode 1 alongside episode 2... downloaded to check if they improved or not. Commie is really irregular so we can't really trust their releases to be on time.

a reload of a show i loved to death?
i'm grudingly interested. this better not suck. i'm not 15 anymore...
the first 30 seconds of this show epitomize why people think people who watch anime are weird. It was neutrally perverted, and dizzyingly confusing. I really wasn't sure I wasn't about to watch some hentai.
"open file" is this title supposed to represent some kind of theme that they're going to explore here? i'm resigned to it not being as good as another possible analogy, but it might be a good move if they continue to explore it in creative ways that play with and tie into the episodes.
really. do we need all the nudity? oh, well if they're pirates, then they might as well be slutty pirates, i suppose.
lots of rehashing used to flesh out the backstory. a bit lazy. but it makes quick work...
but the one bit of backstory that is just sitting there being weird is Dio. i mean, unless you were a hardcore fan, it's a little shocking to see him just sitting around like that whole big scene at the end of the first series was obviously leading up to what he's doing now, just sitting there, looking at the stars and singing the birthday song. i mean, because i know that i was more than a little shocked and had to go "okay, wait, so that's somebody named Dio? Or that's Dio?" and then go look it up.
on the whole, i was pleasantly pleased with the first episode of this. it's a bit "happy go lucky" for my tastes, but it's nice to look at, some of the tactics used in episode 01 were fucking awesome clever, and a fun first episode on the whole. it's going to be interesting to see how the Ades Federation bad guys progress, because, if anything, they're the one tire on this wagon with a bit of sag to them.

Where have you been? They've done a fair number of shows, and were the among the best groups for a couple of them. They do drop a number of shows.
-------------------
Regarding episode 2, I take back my original statement. Unless they go back over some of the stuff they showed there, watching the original series would be a pretty good idea. Reading a summary if you watched it before. There was a fair amount of stuff I don't remember, specifically about how overpowering Guilders are supposed to be and the Exile.
While the CG wasn't blended as well this time (typical for Gonzo of late), overall the episode still looked good.
Fam is one hell of a pilot. It also makes perfect sense why the Vespa is such a tiny Vanship, it allows Fam and Jizel to play to their particular strengths. Jizel having photographic memory feels a bit cheap, but she is a navigator.
I still don't think Gonzo knows what they want to do with this series.

Consider me guilty then. I honestly never saw them before.
Here's Commie (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=255215)'s version for whoever is waiting. Im sticking with SFWhine for now.
And I honestly didn't quite get what happened on episode 2.

Wait.. Dio's a guy?
I noticed he used "boku", but thought she was just being a tomboy..
And yeah, after this episode, I think I will try to watch the original series between now and next week. Fam's cool and all, but I find Gisey cuter.

Hopefully, Milia is done with her mopey selfish phase, and we can get on with the main plot. It helps that she was taken in by Fam and the Sky Pirates, particularly given that Fam was brought into the pirate in a similar way. Unfortunately, this also leaves open the option that Fam's lineage may be special too. In fact, it probably is.
I was glad to see the pirates scrapping the ship they earned, rather than converting it to one of their own. They also honored those who died aboard it. They're the type who uses every bit of a ship for the largest gain in the community as a whole, rather than taking on an additional liability by using a large ship they're not as intimately familiar with.
It's cute that Fam and Gisele have been such close friends for so long, and both of them knew they wanted to participate in a revived version of the race.
But what keeps me watching (in addition to the character/uniform/mechanical/building design) is Fam's endless well of pirate ambition. She wants to steal the Slyvius (successor to the Slyvannia?), a legendary "ghost ship," and then give it Milia, just because she can.

Her haircut seems to symbolise this. She also decided to be useful (whatever that means, when one says so while sipping tea xD).
I still can't recognise her lackey Teddy as a girl though. He's a boy no matter how you look at her.

I live with the fact that they're flying with skirts, but I can't really ignore how they fly without goggles. It's been bugging me since episode 01, and it's still around by episode 04. I just can't seem to grow into it.
Other than that, Gisey had a guestimaged diagram of the ship. Giving the precise directions she was giving seemed totally unreasonable based on how dangerous it is.

Other than that, Gisey had a guestimaged diagram of the ship. Giving the precise directions she was giving seemed totally unreasonable based on how dangerous it is.It sounded to me that she was able to guess the approximate structure of the interior of the ballast area after she got a very close look at the exterior. Dio was highly impressed with her ability to discern the details of the Sylvius from that blurry photo. They're right, there's only so many ways you can build a capital airship, and still have it be effective at its task. Of course, Fam was correct too about the number of countermeasures and weaponry it had.
The bigger problem I had with this episode is right in the middle of it, I suddenly felt like I had missed an episode.
We went from Fam and Gisey nearly being drowned in the ballast tanks, to Fam rather happily agreeing to capture as many Ades Federation ships as her age. Her and what pirate army agreed to this? With Dio's help, sure, they might be able to take one. Fam can't take over military ships on her own. They need a crew. Moreover, she's not the one who landed the first harpoon, and she certainly hasn't landed any harpoons on the 15 vessels she's supposed to take. Fam doesn't have the command authority to do what Tatiana is asking of her.
I know Fam is supposed to be a free spirit and all, but how did she go from agreeing to help Milia save her sister to building an army just because another captain says she'll kill them for revealing military secrets? Furthermore...what military secrets? Fam and Gisey nearly drowned, and Fam only just woke as Tatiana gave her ultimatum. If she was so concerned, she would have thrown them off the Sylvius right away.
Also, it's one thing for the primary cast to be girls. Its another for all of Sylvius' bridge officers to also be female. It was acceptable before...now it's obvious this is Doki Doki Moe Moe Kyun~ Steampunk, not a Last Exile sequel.
That said, I did like Milia's new haircut and slightly more self-reliant attitude.

The military secrets were the functionalities of the ship, as well as its abilities. The main point was that it could go underwater.

Possibly one of the best pilots in the sky, only rivaled by Claus (main character of Last Exile) and Dio. She's met Dio a number of times (don't want to say too much more than that for those who haven't seen the first series).
She was also the icon character of Last Exile, used in most of the promotional material.

I was assuming that she was using sonar to predict the exact turns, and was just guestimating where they would lead too. But after watching again there was no indication that she was doing that, I guess I just assumed it because the navigator of the sylvius was doing something similar 5 minutes before hand.

Now that a normal character is still alive, I'm wondering who else from Last Exile is still alive. I originally thought Fam was Klaus' descendent, but now he might just be hanging out someplace.

What Millia did was pretty stupid. I can only think that she did that out of haste so that Turan would not be destroyed for one moment (by establishing more territory before the main land got written off).

I had a tough time believing this one. It's one thing for the Sky Pirates to swindle, lie, hijack, and force capital ships to "ground" as a method to steal them. But what noble in their right mind would agree to give up their ship over a bet? Even if they lost, they still have several scores of crewmembers that can simply not allow the pirates to take the ship. She had a superior semi-military force, and was sure she would win the cute "boy" to molest. Why would she simply just let her ship be taken?
I guess you could leave it up to apathy, which she certainly was...but that hijack was a little tough to swallow.
As for Augusta, it has always been pretty obvious that she's a puppet ruler. The one thing I did like was that there is more than one "not so loyal" Minister/General. Vasant appears to have an alternative motive as well, even if she is significantly more supportive of their puppet empress than Luscinia. They've also hinted that she was once an extremely fierce ruler of her own country that got absorbed. I'm not sure if the implication was that she was violent in the martial skills, or merely through policies.

Almost all proper nouns are written in Katakana, the Japanese alphabet for spelling foreign words: ie. "computer, mitzvah, thanks".
This is true for the name of nations/countries (Turan, Ades, Grakiiehs), cities (Morvarid, Iglesia, Kartoffel) and for natural features (ie. Grand Lake)
All other text appears in Hiragana (alphabet for Japanese spelling) or Kanji (moonrunes), with the Hiragana spellings only used for the text describing the situation at the opening of the series. Kanji is used for the actual labels and descriptions accompanying the names of nations, cities, etc. (the sole exception is the word: Line, which is written in Katakana, and, taken with the Kanji next to it, reads as: border / borderline.)
Other terms written in Katakana: Augusta, leader, Notos.
Notes Specific to the Map itself: (Starts out in Notos in the SE and then goes SOUTH, SW, WEST, CENTER, EAST, NE, NORTH, NW)
--IF YOU'RE USING THE WRONG MAP WITH THE MODERN-DAY POLARITY, YOU'RE GOING TO BE UPSIDE DOWN--
Notos is denoted with a character for: "Former / ex-" as in "the former Ottoman Empire" - It may or may not have a current government or a code of laws etc.
Turan is a labeled "Oukoku" - Kingdom / Monarchy
It's "royal capital" is the city of Iglesia.
There are two collections of lands labeled "Union of Small States". It is ambiguous as to how, how many, and how much these lands are united.
The "Unsettled Lands" reads literally as "not yet residence region"
It is strange that these lands would be unsettled, because they reside in almost the exact same geographical area as Turan, although more mountainous and more land locked. They would correspond to present day Southern Europe.
"Sky Pirate Air Space" is literally "air space of the sky tribe/family. It is not noted whether or not the Sky Pirates have any formal control over any land.
Grand Lake is labeled: giant/great lake.
Ades "Federation" is read as "renpou", which is used with multiple meanings in multiple examples. It can mean: commonwealth, federation (of states), confederation, union. It's used in as opposite examples as "Federal Reserve (of the United States of America)" and "Soviet Union"(referring to the former USSR).
Morvarid, the capital of Ades, is labeled "shuto" or capital city / metropolis. As in: the capitals of Japan and France are Tokyo and Paris.
"Ades Vassal State" is literally: Ades Federation Vassal State. Unlike the other areas within the Ades Federation, only this section is labeled with the moonrune for "country / state"
The other lands composing the Ades Federation are labeled as literally: Ades Federation Conquest/Subjugation Lands. It is quite likely that these peoples of the so-called Ades "Federation" did not join very willingly.
While much land to the northeast of Morvarid has been subjugated by the Ades Federation, the land to the north and northeast of much of the Ades Federation is still not in their control.
The land furthest northeast that is NOT part of Ades is labelled literally: Northern Country / Nation. The wording here makes it seem much more likely to be a single, united country / state, rather than a looser affiliation like the "Union of small States".
I wrote it as GRAKIIEHS. Grah - key - S (as in the letter "S"). I have a bad feeling this is a very poor mispronunciation of some actual thing...
The term accompanying Grakiiehs is said: "taikoku", for: "large country / major powers". It may very well be that this is a single, great country, or the term used to refer to the many multiple, major powers that rule this land. Obviously this explanation and both terms would not fit on the image. I had to choose one, and it seems strange to have such a clearly defined border for such a loose collection of lands, so...
2 - THE POLARITY
So Last Exile has this thing with weird planets, remember? If you watched the first Last Exile series, you should! If you haven't, go and watch that, you silly, silly fool. And the weird thing with the planet this time is that it's Earth (or at least everybody keeps calling it that!) but this Earth has had the poles reversed (to what degree? that's unknown). So in this series now, what we'd know as south is north, and what goes west now goes east. Grakiiehs is in Africa (you can see the Nile on the map) but it's the Great Country of the North. I've labelled this "New North" near the map's compass.
It is not neceassirly that the poles are exactly reversed. After all, even today Magnetic North is NOT located at Polar North. (they're near each other, but not the same location). God only knows if this map is supposed to be using Polar North or Magnetic North or something else. It doesn't say what poles are where or anything like that. It just says Great Country of the North, Grakiiehs. So, what's North? I don't know. Maybe it's polar north, maybe it's magnetic. That's why I've dubbed it: "New North"
I made two images and switched the one image, to flip the polarity back to modern day polarity.
3 - THE IMAGE
The image was made with a satelite image of Earth partially imposed on top of the concept map for the anime. It was likely a color image. The scan, obviously, was not in color. Now it's here in glorious black and white. That's why it's so fucking impossible to make out what's what and where's where on the part of the map with the satelite image printed.
I know the image sucks don't bitch to me you fucking good for nothing two bit shit for brains didn't your mother ever teach you not to grouse about a gift, even if you didn't particularly care for it in the first place go learn some manners you accepted this and i did my best so take it up with a priest or your pillow i don't really give a.
Apparently the image comes from a promo / publication in Young Animal Magazine. I don't know who got bought this magazine. I don't know who scanned this image out of the magazine. I don't know who spread this image on the Internet. I don't even know how I found this image. I don't even know how this image and this text file got here. Wait. Uh-oh. I mean, I'm not sure what image we're even talking about?
I made two images and switched the one image, to flip the polarity back to modern day polarity. I fucked around with the levels more in one. Enjoy the eye pain, but remember that it should have been a color scan, not this gray fuckmess I had to squint at to read goddamn runes off of.
4-- ADDED CONTENT
I have only added the words: New North, and New South. Having single-handedly dubbed these terms, I now copyright them for all time. Yes, I just did that. Wait, what's that? Oh, well, I'll see you in court.
5 -- COMMENTS
I don't get how Dio is there? Wouldn't it have taken like A REAL LONG TIME for him to have left the world from the first anime, and gotten to this one?

I need a timeline more than I need a map.
Earth
Long time ago: Humans used Exiles to leave Earth for other planets.
180 years ago: Space-goers decided to come back, drove the natives off their land and established the Turan Kingdom.
Now: Ades aims for world domination and used the Turan princess to control an Exile.
Prester
Long time ago: Humans from Earth settled here after arriving with an Exile
2 years ago: Events as depicted by Last Exile anime
Now: Dio and some of the crew of Silvana have arrived back on Earth and are part of the Silvius' crew.
I caught up on this after watching Last Exile. Stuff makes so much more sense.

It's a recap as Gisel writes a letter to her dad. The few minutes at the end mattered a little though, and explained why the pirates were present at the Anatornay -Turan meeting. (I watched 10 before 9.5 and thought "Wait, I thought the pirates went home after they got ambushed in the snow..)

Yeah. It's like a deliberate "Hit here for instant kill" zone.
Internal sabotage would have been much better, but none of them could have done that without Gisel... except maybe Tatiana/Dio because they're godly.
Then again, they don't have a tiny vanship like Fam's.
DarthEnderX
Fri, 01-06-2012, 12:36 PM
Oh yeah, internal would have been fine.
But if you can take out a capitol ship just by shoot one specific pipe, why wouldn't ALL ship combat revolve around vanships attacking that pipe?
More importantly, the ships are obviously covered in armor. Why wouldn't you armor that pipe?
Ryllharu
Fri, 01-06-2012, 04:15 PM
First off, it was a lucky shot.
I think you are forgetting a big part of that episode. Millia and Fam were able to get off that shot because their ship is incredibly small and they were obscured by the cloud cover the entire time. The crew is probably quite capable of defending that array under normal circumstances and visibility. They got drawn into the clouds pursuing the Silvius, a task that the commander of the Anshar had been frustrated with since early on. He got outwitted, and he knew it.
As for why it is unarmored? My first guess would be efficiency. The coils are obviously heat exchangers. It's a very...Death Star design flaw moment. The top surface of those Ades capital ships are covered in gun emplacements now, as the newer models in the previous episode showed. They fired on the pirate vanships just an episode before constantly, and with deadly results. You'll also note in episode 7, that you don't see that coil array on the newer ships behind the ram where it was on the Anshar. The Anshar was an older model, which had been in service for some time, and its commander feared for his prowess (as mentioned in one of the very early episodes, when we first glimpsed the Silvius).

First off, it was a lucky shot.
Bullshit, it's obviously exactly what Fam was making an attack run on.
It may have been lucky that Millia actually hit what she was aiming for, but it's not like they were just shooting the enemy ship randomly and just happened to hit the self-destruct button.
It's a very...Death Star design flaw moment.Right, which already makes it a cliched plot device, which is made worse by the fact that Fam didn't even steal secret Death Star plans for this ship beforehand to know there was a weakness there.
Which means, it's probably not a secret that it's there, yet nobody bothers to shoot at it with trained marksmen instead of spoiled princesses.
The top surface of those Ades capital ships are covered in gun emplacements now, as the newer models in the previous episode showed. Which begs the question, why the hell is the inferior vessel the flagship?
Death13a
Sat, 01-07-2012, 07:01 PM
Probably most of the time it would be major inconvenience at most and at that moment the flagship was going at max speed. If they were hit during normal battle crew could have quickly minimize damage and make repairs once ship stopped. The flagship was going at max speed and in order to do it they developed tunnel vision where all crew was focused on maintaining speed and all gunners were focused to front. And they were over Enemy's territory and which point they could be attacked at any moment and they would have 2 choices start a war or surrender and humiliate Empire.

Bullshit...
[snip]
Which means, it's probably not a secret that it's there, yet nobody bothers to shoot at it with trained marksmen instead of spoiled princesses.
Which begs the question, why the hell is the inferior vessel the flagship?Nice of you to conveniently ignore my second paragraph, about how it was only possible due to the fact that the girls were completely obscured by the clouds. Maybe you forgot that in the previous Last Exile, infantry was frequently used to defend and attack other ships. You don't think that the Anshar is crewed by only the people on the bridge, do you? If there is a critical weakness like that, one that has been repaired on later models, you don't think they adequately defend it under normal visibility? The Anshar is a veteran combat vessel. It hadn't been sunk in years of service. It had be used in many campaigns. That is evidence enough that only in these extraordinary circumstances could that shot have even been attempted, much less pulled off.
Visibility makes or breaks a battle in the Last Exile universe. They have no radios. All communication is still performed my courier missive or by blink codes. Most ships escape by laying down smoke or taking a risk by diving into the clouds. Capital ships can't fight or defend themselves unless they can see. We've seen that from episode 1.
Flagship: A vessel carrying the flag officer or the commander of a fleet. That doesn't necessitate it being the most superior vessel. The commander of the whatever legion was on it. That's all it needs to be a flagship. It may not normally have been used in front-line operations anymore. It was a desperate chase to destroy a long-time thorn in his side. The other vessels in his fleet were engaged or destroyed.
Fine, you don't like that part. Let it go or drop the show if it bothers you that much. Last Exile isn't trying to be Starship Operators or Banner of the Stars. It doesn't pretend to be tactically accurate. The original LE has all kinds of wonky physics and other style-over-realism moments.
There are plenty of other things in this series to discuss than continuing to bitch about a flashy, decisive moment that has next to nothing to do with actual tactics and more to do with a symbolic blow to Ades from three episodes ago.

The flashback explained a lot about the previous Augusta and her subjects' devotion to her cause. Now they're all just taking it too aggressively in their anger to see her will be realised no matter the cost.
It's also weird how Guild members are guarding the Ade Federation's head of state.. the head of state of those who remained on the planet, and not the Turan who returned from an Exile.
The rocket chicks are indeed totally on another level of hotness. None of them appear to be very old neither.

Yeah, the cult of personality surrounding Augusta is pretty insane. She was a very divisive leader and she knew it. It is a shame that the fanatics who loved her are no in control, using her daughter as a puppet. If what I remember from Dio's conversation, the guild members are from the faction that either didn't go to Prester, or are what is left of the guild after Delphine's end and subsequent disbandment of the guild. Augusta took them in.
I thought it is more interesting that Liliana isn't brainwashed. Definitively so after the scene in episode 12. She's doing this willingly, because she too greatly admired Augusta. It seemed at first that she was trying to live up to Augusta's message, the one that she heard directly from Augusta herself. But for some reason, since her capture and activation of the Turan Exile, she's decided to back Luscinia's plan of peace through "unification." I wonder what convinced her to back his plan?
I like the thought of a brewing battle between the two princesses. One that may ultimately end up with Milia killing her sister to take the inherited control of the Exile. Alvis and Dio threw out the possibility, and if Liliana can't be convinced she's wrong to follow along with Luscinia's vengeance, it may just come to that.
The Wing Priestesses are awesome. Both the design of their uniform and their pressure suits for flying are great. I especially liked that the writers didn't have Glaciens' knowing the common tongue. Milia, being better educated than most, had to interpret the entire time. I would have accepted Gisey too, but being a sky pirate obviously limited her exposure to libraries.
As for the rest of the events, it was pretty obvious that Luscinia is throwing away his annexed territories' forces. He deems them expendable. Vasant recognized that the old prejudices are back again, and her people are being thrown away. Luscinia is basically doing everything Augusta stood against in the last months of her life.

They were present and in use during the Grand Race 10 years ago, while the events of Last Exile happened 2 years ago, so I'll buy the "Guilders left behind" theory over ex-Delphine fraction.. though we did only see the two bodyguards at that race and not an entire squad now.
Talking about the squad, the Dio-rescuing-Alvis flashback.. Dio's awesome. Now that he's not brainwashed or distracted over Imelman he's putting his skills to good use. It feels rather forceful to have Anatory claim a territory after coming back to Earth though. You'd think they of all people would have learned to "communicate" the peaceful way. Maybe they've tried.. Ades isn't exactly open to negotiations. Makes you wonder why they left Prester though. That place looked plentiful enough after the Grand Stream dispelled and warmed up the planet.
PS: I want more Alvis screentime!! And the toy lamb.
The Wing Priestesses are awesome.
I really enjoyed watching Dian. She's like the mellow, shy parts of Felli (which means she isn't THAT much like Felli, but it's enough..)
Yeah, Luscinia is basically in revenge mode at the moment while still trying to follow Augusta's ideology as much as he can convince himself to.

I really wanted to know what weaponry the Glacias vanships had, but they either took them out too quickly or got taken out so quickly that I never got a good look.
The White exile must be frozen in the earth. If their purpose was to migrate to a different planet then it makes no sense for them to be incapable of flight by nature. If returning to Earth was the intent of the creators though, then deciding to build one that could weather out the harshness of the Earth for generations could be a way to go. Pity that it can be activated by old men though. I liked the idea that only good looking girls could command them. :p

I know that Millia and Fam both don't want it to happen, but at this point, Millia really does need to be the one to kill Lilliana. In fact, she's the only one who should. I'll be disappointed if this series doesn't end in Lilliana's death at Millia's hand. The level of atrocities she has allowed to happen, willingly, is the same reason that Augusta was killed in the first place and started this whole mess. If anyone else were to kill Lilliana, or she kill herself, it wouldn't end the cycle of vengeance. It has to be Millia who takes the responsibility. Nor can it be imprisonment or exile, because that would give the impression that leniency was given, and others would continue to seek out Lilliana to kill her anyway, or take it out on the remaining Turans.
I wasn't at all surprised Vasant went to the Wing Priestesses. I wonder what she's teaching them, and when we'll see them again.
Buffalobiian

I think that Lilliana has expected everything that has happened thus far. My train of thought is that Lilliana has concluded that Luscinia has control of her and the Exile she controls. She can either obey him, or have him force the Exile to do as he wishes. Either way, the weapon will be used abd people will die. She's a lost cause.
The problem is that Turan/Millia still thinks of her as the Head of State and needs to be rescued. Lilliana sees this as futile and so devised the above actions in order change Millia's mission from "Rescue the head of Turan" to "Become the head of Turan."
She needs to be a leader who knows what she's out to do. Only when she's ready can she properly use the Exile she'll receive. Given that, I'm not entirely certain whether Lilliana will die from suicide, Millia's hands or mass bombardment.

SFWhine - Episode 15 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=283927)
--------------------------------
So I was wrong about the barley/Urbanus/Dio-rescues-Alvis segment from a while back. It wasn't a flashback at all, but within the same timeline as everything else.
-Lilliana attacks Millia's forces
-Alvis escapes on board Urbanus
-Guilders board Sylvius
-Dio fights top-guilder.
-Assassination squad disables Sylvius's engines
-Sylvius goes underwater.
---------------------------------
-Urbanus escapes to the barley fields (Earth's Anatoray?)
-Urbanus is dry-docked for repairs when attacked
-Alvis is on the run
-Dio rescues Alvis, kills pursuing assasination squad (the same one that was on Sylvius?)
-Top Guilder watches them leave
----------------------------------
-Urbanus survives encounter
-Sylvius has yet to show itself
So both Dio AND the guilder made it out of Sylvius alive.. and got to Anatoray (which is supposed to be really far east)?? I'm going to assume that the assassination squad was the same one that stormed Sylvius since Top Guilder made it out too. Plus, it's cooler for them to be rare. (and now, dead).
Does this mean their whole attack was targeting Alvis? I didn't think they knew about Anatoray's Exile, but you'd have to come to the logical conclusion that they had and controlled one in order to explain how they got back from Prester.
Last thing that's confusing me is that Top Guilder didn't murder the entire Urbanus crew. Given his confidence in retrieving Augusta "alone", there doesn't seem to be anything that can outmatch those guys anyway.
At first I was also baffled at the attitudes and behavior of the Millia's Allied Captians vs the civilians who had settled there before Turan arrived 200 years ago. Again I wrongly assumed that Turan drove out all indigenous populations before establishing their rule, but it seems that it's not the case. Some of those people stayed, as did Turan's discrimination.
edit2: Or, perhaps that wasn't the case at all. Turan could well have driven out the indigenous survivors. That would explain the people's original despise for them in the Ades Federation. Augusta is teaming up with Millia to fight Luscinia, but they never mentioned anything about giving them their land back. The people shown getting ready to move to Turan may well be those who were exiled long ago. But if that was the case, who the hell holds 200-year-old memories?

------------------------------
Wow, so the ending scenes of the original Last Exile were pretty misleading. Claus, Tatianna and co actually settled down on Earth relatively soon after the Grand Stream disappeared. Prester, instead of being an actual planet (or at least a natural planet), was an artificial construct to house the immigrants.
But most importantly, Claus is alive and out of commission. I'm curious as to how he got up onto the vanship in the first place (perhaps just one of his legs is incompetent). I'm not too saddened that he won't be flying though. He's had his own series and we've got Dio and Fam in this one anyway. Plus, he promised Lavie (who actually looks grown up now) that they'd stop flying to fight if they could.
edit: Assuming the ending scenes were in chronological order, the automatons chasing Dio were of the classic Guild-Star design. The last time I recalled seeing a Guild machine on Earth was a hybrid model.

"I don't know anything" -Fam
Damn right you don't. You and Sara annoy me to no ends. You go on and on about wanting peace and making everyone give up their differences just so you can have a quiet afternoon (and a Grand Race or whatever). That's no different from telling everyone to sit down and shut the fuck up.
Reminds me of parents who tell their kids to stop arguing with each other instead of listening to them.
People are trying to solve a problem here. They happen to have different ways going about that, and that non-negotiable difference means that basically one side has to beat the other. If that's the only solution they can come down to, then so be it.
"Violence is not the solution. But when it is, it's the only solution." Obviously not the most correct statement, but it sums up an idea pretty well.
I can't tell if the Grand Exile is the awoken version of the exile employed by Glacia, or if it's some other one Luscinia somehow found.

Truly one of those series where the plot always gets better when the main character is nowhere to be seen. Fam was seen in this ep, yeah, but at least she's on a rescue mission, which seems to be the only thing one could still expect her to pull off, after her numerous other failures.
Otherwise this has been good stuff. Grand Exile falling apart after every shot from being incomplete is a good thing. After the satisfying fleet battles haxor weapons never leave a good taste in the mouth.
Maybe it's because I marathoned the show up till this point, but this hasn't been as bad as I've heard from here and there. Fam's stupid inactivity and escapism likely feel far less annoying that way. With only a single ep left, I doubt she will have another chance to disappoint anymore.

So Ades still had the technology to create Exiles - which explains their hybrids from the previous episodes.
The starfishes seem to be also on a subpar AI that isn't very smart. They were much less intimidating than in the previous series when it had a pilot. I sure hope Al gets to use her Exile for something. As it stands right now she was only critical because (from what I presume) she was controlling the Exile that was transporting Sophia from Prester to Earth.
I hated that they never explained how the Sylvius escaped from the boarding assassins TWICE. The only person who could stand up to them was Dio, and he was busy. They even showed the old engine-room operator to be alive and well here. It's actually one of the things I hate about both Last Exile shows: the amount of material/scenes that were just skipped since there's no reasonable resolution to them (or they couldn't be bothered thinking up one).
Looking up,
edit: Assuming the ending scenes were in chronological order, the automatons chasing Dio were of the classic Guild-Star design. The last time I recalled seeing a Guild machine on Earth was a hybrid model.
These guild machines sure have inconsistent performance if they made Dio run for his life like that yet can't clearly outmatch a few pirates.

SFWhine - Episode 21 (http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=300162)
----------------
-Nothing got resolved. The same shit happened here that happened at the fortress less than a week back (in terms of timeline). It just happens that no one's wanting to kill anyone else at this point because they're either not here, or their target is dead.
World leaders decide they want to live together, but that's not necessarily true for the people. Apparently resources was a big problem, so that hasn't been fixed neither. Remember back to that episode where Sara told Milia that crops were hard to grow and everything.
-"I can't remove all the hatred, but I'll keep on flying!" -says Fam. You can surely keep on flying, that's not the problem. The problem, is that people are starving, backstabbing and whatnot while you're doing that Fam. It just so happens that there are a few people who are standing out to be the bad guys and channelling all the hatred into a few selected scapegoats.
Why aren't the Glacians killing anybody anymore? Because they're all dead..
The will to keep dreaming doesn't guarantee results, and results were what Luscinia and the others tried a achieve. The older I grow, the more supportive I am of efforts that try to achieve results in a timely manner for the greater good (while inevitably trampling on some along the way) as opposed to fleeting dreams that have shown to be nothing but ideals.
-Alvis did absolutely nothing this episode. What's the point of being the Key if you aren't going to effectively use it (besides transporting Sophia)? She was supposed to be the one to find Sara due to her telepathic link and all.. but then gave up on it.. >_>
Okay... the good things this episode:
-Sophia looks better than ever. Millia also looked much better in the Sylvius uniform than her princess get-up.
-Lavie and Claus appearing finished off with a nice touch. That hug was golden.
-Dio getting yellow-carded was BS, but anyhow - it lead to some rare changes of expression on Tatianna's face.

Pretty meh for a last episode of a series circling around so big political issues. Like Bill already said, they went all unresolved, except for a few cases of judging criminals, since they conveniently got themselves killed. Or were apparently pardoned like Dian (executing Dian would like likely reduced the current Glacian population by 10%, so it would have been beyond cruel anyway).
So, what remains is to look at this series completely from Fam's point of view. If you take everything else but her desire to fly, race, and hang around with her friends as mere background noise, then obviously everything went very smoothly. In that sense the show concluded without major problems, although reducing the race then to a minute or two is dubious.
A forgettable series.

Indeed. Perhaps it would have been better had they not wasted time on two recap episodes (which weren't even far enough apart). That's not even counting the Last Exile recap, just the two Silver Wing ones.
A disappointing ending. It's Gonzo, so this wasn't unexpected.

Aaand finished.
This seriesī biggest problem was that its complete first half was a waste of time. It only started getting interesting when the real war started after like 12 episodes. Then it was actually enjoyable to watch, but, of course, the ending had to ruin it.
I donīt like stories where thereīs no clear enemy at some point. When Luscinia gave Augusta to Fam (after the worst speeches in anime-history, seriously, take a lesson from Naruto, Fam Fan Fan Fam Fan Fam Faaaaa....), he shook off any villain-feeling he had left prior to that scene. At this point, everybody was fighting each other for nothing. Sure, the message "war is always for nothing" isnīt a new one, neither a bad one, but it felt just stupid in this case.
And what was it with the admiral (Famīs granpa) dying? Made no sense. That was 100% suicide. Seeing how he has a granddaughter, he should have been motivated enough to keep going.
And I have no idea what those Exiles are about. Or what Luscinia tried to do. Oh, almost forgot: So ... what if Fam and Gisey hadnīt come before Luscinia? Did Luscinia accept that Augusta would then die together with him?
Best thing was the appearance of the first seasonīs main characters, though I almost didnīt realize who they were. Speaking of which, did Dio appear in season 1? Or where from did they know each other. I have absolutely forgotten everything about the first Exile-anime.
Anyway, as Kraco said: Forgettable series. If it wasnīt for the setting (air ships), I would have never bothered.

I think the show was going for the one man's hero is another's villain take. Besides, everybody in this show adored the little Augusta, Luscinia making no exception. It's not like Luscinia was a madman trying to destroy the whole world. He was simply trying to solve all the problems at once in the most straightforward and consequently bloody way possible. He betted everything on the Grand Exile, which turned out to be a piece of wreckage. The old Admiral betted on the same thing alongside him, which is why I think he chose to go down with it. He sided with Luscinia till the very end, so if he had remained, it would have only resulted in a trial judging him guilty and possibly given some shady resistance one more reason to plot nefarious acts of terrorism.

Btw was it explained what Luscinia, Dio and those "angels" were supposed to be? Iīve gotta say ... those are the most overpowered "beings" Iīve ever seen in any anime. The invisible arms from the Elfen Lied-girls or the Uchihaīs Mangekyou Sharingan look like a joke next to them. Lightning-fast speed, enormous strength and a freaky staff-weapon that can lengthen at will. Wow. During the whole war I kept thinking "well, good luck to any ship that doesnīt have Dio to defend against those things".

Watch the first series. Then you'll know what a "Guilder" is.

Like Kraco said, he had to die.
Luscinia too. That's the basis for this happy ending because everyone who needs to be held responsible is dead.
Dio was from Season 1. Maybe the name Luciola might trigger something for you.
As for overpowered Guilders, see my rant on how Sylvius got out alive TWICE after being assaulted by them. Plot armour doesn't get any thicker than this.
