You got my hopes up that the first episode had been released earlier when I saw the topic. I wonder if there's going to be any new material or if it's just going to follow the game completely then again maybe they'll add things from The Golden.

Nitpicking: well I'm slightly disappointed with the first episode as it suffers from the same problems as other animes based on games in the pacing since it's moving forward pretty fast though I'm expecting it'll get better after the introduction is over. The animation felt weaker than I expected from a first episode as it had it's moments when it looked slightly off/weird. And what was the point of Yuu having his uniform zipped up through most of the episode? It just felt weird.

The good: I like the touches from the game as they had a lot more music from the game than I expected, it's good and bad since I thought they'd have more new tunes, the calender, the eyecatch and when Yuu used zio/lightning attack. The things I remember them skipping from the game were pretty minor so that's ok, though it might have helped the pacing if they were included since it would have meant more character interaction instead of jumping around so much.

I guess Daisuke is happy now as he finally got a name that they call him, speaking of which it's kinda neat that he doesn't say that much in the anime.

I pretty much agree. Even if one did not play the game, it feels pretty disjointed. The izanagi part was also pretty random. I love the inclusion of the soundtrack and colour themes though. Those two things made persona persona, at least in terms of style.

I care not for poor pacing in the introduction, the prologue in the game was torture as well.

I'm just wondering how they'll handle the harem romance on this one, obviously we won't get to the final scene on any of them but a platonic replacement would feel pretty weak.

Heh. Indeed. This episode covered at least the first 5 hours of gameplay. I can see why new viewers would be overwhelmed. To be fair it seems it was pure fanservice for the fans of the game. Personally? I fangasmed. But my opinion will always be biased on this series...

I laughed out loud when we saw the calendar and the status screen. Seriously? And the critical hit was win.

I can see why the series won't really appeal to most gotwooters, but I hope more give it a chance.

I would have liked an explanation for Igor's Tarot Cards at the start though. According to RandomC the upright Tower and Moon indicated a change and a mystery. Fitting.

Oh... and I liked the transition scene Yuu (Souji/P4MC) had when he unbottoned his jacked when his Persona awakened.

Speaking of Persona 4, I never got around to finishing the game cause I got kinda bored and gave my copy of the game to my cousin.

Not to mention unlike Persona 3, I didn't find the females very appealing. They looked too generic.

I think I stopped around the part with the military looking underground bunker?

Getting kinda curious now if he's only going to use Izanagi or if he'll bring out a bunch of different personas.

I always liked Chie more than any of the females though it's probably because I like the tomboyish attitude, so for me they're just better than in P3.

I haven't seen any Persona games, and so my view is a lot different from you guys. I thought Yuu was involved in something strange from the beginning with his lithium countenance, but in fact that strangely calm behavior paid off in later scenes. I especially liked the store scene where he was calmly entering the TV as if it was everyday business. I like that sort of scenes in general, as opposed to the scenes a moment later when they chose to immediately flee from a harmless looking teddy bear thing but only stared stupidly at the obviously hostile shadow creeps, even though the local teddy bear ran away in panic.

I'll keep watching for now. I liked some aspects, some not, but all in all this showed some promise.

I was mainly pissed by the face coloring, felt utterly strange.
Other than that, for someone not knowing the game at all, it felt quite rushed. I'll have to watch ep 2 to check wether I like it or not.

I think the shadows looked cuter than Teddy, he's a weird looking mofo.

I don't think new viewers would have been interested if we only had a 1st episode with Souji (Yuu) arriving and meeting Ryotarou, Nanako, Youseke and Chie though. It indeed was a rushed episode... but it was needed due to all the content previous to the persona awakening.

Lets see how next episodes turn. A bit dissapointed not many here are giving this show a chance though.

This second episode didn't seem so interesting. One thing ruining it was how the sidekick's negative side sounded like Hichigo from Bleach and as a character wasn't much different. Still, the setting wasn't bad nor the little psychological warfare. Yuu being the cold fish surprised by nothing also continues to amuse me.

Chie's tantrum was pretty funny, especially knowing how the dudes had been moments before fighting for their lives and she had been sitting on the store floor in safety. Even Yuu's usual lithium calmness seemed a little shaken in front of it. A guileful woman fishing meals out of it.

Caught up on the first two episodes because I promised Zell I'll give this a try. I guess I'm pretty neutral about all this..

For one, I'm a lot more interested in the mystery, murder and the elusive atmosphere of the fog and such more so than the combat. Actually, I really dislike the combat. Enter-the-screen, use your superpowers to defeat some monster, call it a day. That formula will always remind me of digimon. (PS: overall, I dislike digimon).

Some of the above comments suggest that it'll move beyond this though (be it a harem or actually solving the mystery), so I'll keep onboard unless I get swamped by too many shows. (Still catching up on others..)

The Princess Yukiko's Search for a Prince scene was the best part of this episode. Heh, her "secret weapons..." Indeed, too bad they didn't record it.

If this anime has one weakness, it's that they're just chugging away at the player team characters, with not too much development in between. I know that this is the same way the intro to the game went, but they could add a little development for other things Persona 4 had to offer. Right now they just blow through the little baddies without blinking an eye. Only the "bosses" get more than a single slash.

I did like the cameo of the music club girl and the sports team guys. Now where is the theater girl? These are the kind of things I mean. The characters were able to still pull off a normal school life in between what has already happened so far.

Eps 2 and 3 were so similar... we're still in the intro?

Game wise the Main Character (Yuu) got his Persona just 5 minutes before Shadow Yosuke appeared. This didn't have a dungeon to explore. And Chie got her Persona a few days later as they sought Yukiko's Castle. So yeah... this went really fast, but it was loyal to the game.

Since their current main focus is finding Yukiko, the formula will probably be repeated again next episode. They had to leave because Chie's Shadow put a strain on Chie.

I understand the writers need to appeal to those who played the game.
But for a non player, they have to tailor a nice story too, or those viewers might just leave and never get interrested in the game/license.
Right now, it seems a bit bland and we have a huge scenario copy/paste from last ep, when we do not even have enough background story regarding the main character and don't even understand how he can control his persona from scratch.

Maybe they should have had a little more focus on the MC in the first ep, then introduce the other two personas in ep 2 and have a fresh ep 3. Might be difficult due to chronological order and game, but an anime also has its rules to catch the audience.

"It's ok to remove, copy and paste"

Anyway I can understand how you feel but it's hard to strike a balance between players and non players. The way things are now there's simply a longer than usual introduction so they're taking their time instead of rushing through everything and I don't see how that would have been good for the anime since it'd bring about problems in the pacing. But otherwise what Archangel said.

Remember that the MC was a silent character in the game... it could be said it was 'yourself'. Making a focus on him would have taken a bit too long and we wouldn't have seen Personae until a few episodes later.

That second Persona was a big deus ex machina. I don't know how the game pulled that off, but it would be a lot more believable if the people had some affinity to their Persona, and especially any extra Personas. For example, this Jack O'lantern seemed to be all about fire, so Yuu having had something significant to do with fire would have made it better. Now it's like he wandered a dungeon in some cheap 80's adventure game and picked up a random power up allowing switching to another Persona.

Although I reserve the right change that opinion if the opening scenes with the devilish dude and the icy secretary actually mean these "players" are selling their souls to use the Personas and accepting an extra Persona (out of nowhere) draws the due date that much closer.

Well the shows been hinting about it for some time as the ending says "Bonds of people is the true power" and coupled with the fact that Pyro Jack/Jack O'lantern is a persona from the magicians arcana that Yosuke holds the affinity is there just not quite in the same way you mentioned. In a way I guess you could say that the ending shows you this random power up.

The power to summon different personas was always his, that's what Margaret meant when she said he had the power of wild. The fact that he used jack was simply because the enemy's element was ice, weak to fire.

I don't quite get what fireheart is saying; maybe that's something that will be more understable further down the show. But what you are saying, Archie, doesn't really explain anything I tried to address in my post. I don't have a problem with being Wild, per se, but that it would have been nice if he had had to go through something to summon a vastly different persona. But maybe being a lithium brain allows such a thing... After all, the other two had to defeat/accept their inner darkness to get their first persona manifestation. But being such a cold fish, I doubt Yuu would have an inner darkness in the first place.

fireheart
Mon, 10-24-2011, 06:27 AM
Let's see if I can explain it in simpler terms, if you look at the card that he used to summon Pyro Jack/Jack O'lantern you'll see that it's the same card that Yosuke uses and basically when he establishes bonds to people he also gains access to their cards in short that's the power of the wild. That's what I meant with the ending showing the power up because in the second episode you saw the card that Yosuke holds go inside Yuu and in this episode you see the card that Chie gained go inside of Yuu.

Also they should explain more about Yuu and why he didn't face his shadow later on.

Edit: It's based a lot on tarot cards, the card Yuu holds is the Fool number 0 as wikipedia says about the Fool "The number 0 is a perfect significator for the Fool, as it can become anything when he reaches his destination as in the sense of 'joker's wild'. Zero plus anything equals the same thing."

Edit 2: Just noticed that they made a mistake with the Chariot arcana the number on the card is IIV though it's supposed to be VII.

Yuu's Arcana is the Fool. Number Zero. Empty... yet Infinite. A Wild Card. He can be anything.

I was gonna mention the Fool but i was afraid that would just make the whole matter more confusing

That was... unexciting. I'd have honestly taken one more save a friend and find a new persona clone episode than this, had I known the moment they run out of friends this would be following. I pray to the wizened old goblin of the velvet room what happened in this ep will at least have some meaning later on.

Hmmm... how to put this...
Do you remember the scene with Margaret explaining 'Strenght' and 'Moon' at the beginning of the episode... and how those cards appeared on Yuu's hands on the ending scene?

Kou is Strenght
Ai is Moon

By having a relationship with those two, Yuu has acquired new Personae. This were Social Links. In game they took a few months to be complete through events. The anime simply had this two pass under 2 weeks. P3 and P4 basically have a mix of 'one moment we fight monsters' and 'the next moment we have to study (daily life), have friends (Kou), get a girlfriend (Ai), work (the crane on a napkin was a reference to this)'

Also... a bit extra for those players of Atlus games. The ringtone that came out from Yuu's cellphone was "Zigeunerweisen Sarasate" - Catherine's Game Over Song... whenever you lost on Catherine the 'Love is Over' legend would appear instead of Game Over along this song. Really fitting.

As I see it... it seems only those that played the game will end up enjoying this series after all.

After the previous explanations I figured that would be the case (although the stooges introduced in this ep having any personalities worth summoning persona from is a looooooooong shot).

Actually there was a part of this episode I did find slightly entertaining even though it also ruined something: Yuu's mask of indifferent calm was cracking too much.

This ep was pretty funny. It also felt a bit closer to the first save a friend eps of the beginning, yet it tried to push forward the amateur investigation they have going on. Nanako having a little fun was a good scene as well, because she seemed so sad and forced to endure the circumstances. Having a lithium onii-chan wouldn't make things any easier normally, but like Archie said, the dude brough the onee-chans to amuse her.

I'm actually looking forward to the next ep and seeing what's the deal with Ayato Naoi's cameo in Persona.

Gayest episode ever. Funny though.

And something is definitely up with the animation, i might have excused the faults in the latest episodes only because there were no fighting scenes but this one had plenty and they were pitiful.
