View Full Version : Interesting Videos Thread

I'm tired of clogging up "The Internet" with unfunny videos. Perhaps, one day, "Funny" videos and "Interesting" videos will join hands together and not look upon each other in prejudice. Perhaps, videos will not be judged by their genre but by the contents of their character!

Anyway, here's a super cool video. I am absolutely in loved with Hip Hopized Japanese culture.

I think this thread is redundent. The Funny Videos thread has its share of unfunny videos, and we've even had input in the past about that. After the reply that the Funny Vid thread is practically just a Video thread (which is alright), it was never brought up again. I think Animeniax was the one who brought up how videos were unfunny, and Xan replied.

If this sets a precedence, it justifies things like "The Horror Video thread" or "The Movie Trailer Video thread".

This is pretty interesting. I wonder if it works with people whose languages have no differentiation between 'b' and 'f'.

I know some people who simply can't hear the differentiation between words with a slightly different pronunciation, because their accents just don't pronounce words that way.

This British guy I know accidentally said N-*** instead of Nigga, because he couldn't hear the difference in normal spoken word. At all. No matter how much it was explained to him.

Thing is our linguistic brain evolution almost totally stops after the age of 4 or 5. Or it becomes incredibly less efficient in deciphering and registering new linguistic sounds.
So I can understand why your british guy can't comprehend even after being explained. This also explains why it's so hard to learn languages that are too different from your natural one regarding sounds, rythm and intonations.

Regarding the McGurk effect, it worked on me. But I might be even more affected than anyone else, because since English isn't my natural language, I need to read on the lips even more than you do even in that video since it's presented in English. But even then, the sounds are so simple that I'm ashamed it worked that well. Closing my eyes proved how stupidly efficient this is...

I'm not really sure I understand your question, but it depends on the accent. RP/Queen's English deletes all Rs unless they are followed by a vowel but other accents pronounce the R. Yorkshire, Bristol, and Somerset accents, for example.

Somerset accent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBvUfLUtaXM)

Here's a full distribution of rhotic and non-rhotic English accents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhotic_and_non-rhotic_accents#Distribution)

I'm curious to see how Spanish speakers would interpret it. Most Spanish dialects do not differentiate between b and v.

Edit 2: I haven't had a Linguistics Boner this hard since I graduated from college.

I think like that guy, and I get bashed by my family all the time for doing so. Just because "the Dr on TV said this" or the "dietitian on the radio said that", and the "newspaper journalist said so", it must be right - and I'm being defiant and stubborn for thinking otherwise.

The Funnel plot was an interesting device that I haven't seen before. Too bad it's not really something we can compile for ourselves as readers since the "standard error" isn't really something we can determine.

A Texas family law judge who was secretly videotaped while viciously beating his teen daughter seven years ago won't face criminal charges because too much time has passed, police revealed.

William Adams likely would have faced charges of causing injury to a child or other assault-related offences for the savage 2004 beating of his then-16-year-old daughter Hillary.

But the five-year statutes of limitations expired so the Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge probably won't be charged for beating the cerebral palsy sufferer, Rockport Police Chief Tim Jayroe said.

Babies spend most of their first 9 months of life floating in amniotic fluid, so they can breath fine in liquid suspension. Only once they enter our world do they lose this valuable ability. Now if only science could harness this ability to make it possible for people to breath underwater without mechanical assistance. What a world that would be!

I'm not quite sure what to think about this. After watching it, all I see is a video about a clearly different people with a different culture, detailing the leader in what is almost certainly a 1-sided, biased fashion. I guess if I had gone through basic training and all the molding that comes with it, the video might have a different effect.

I think your first sentence is the biggest point of the video. I think the whole point of the video is to make the Japanese seem inherently different in every crucial way, less human, even. Anti-freedom, hive-minded, anti-democratic, etc. Easier to kill when they conflict your every American ideal.

For the life of me, I cannot see how the video was successful in doing that. At it's best, it made me respect the resilience of Japanese soldiers, and love some of the pretty costumes and dances. At its worse, it made me want to see the emperor dead, but even this feeling existed only momentarily before the application of any higher form of thinking. I wish I could see testimony of how actual soldiers of the era responded to this.

Really? I took the confusing, random juxtaposition of senseless (alien) cultural images as an attempt at fearmongering. We tend to marginalize China and Iraq in the same way these days.

But yes, the "stereotypical" image of the Japanese mindframe has twisted and taken a turn for the positive since the turn of the 21st century, especially from an economic and technological stand point.

Animeniax
Wed, 02-01-2012, 04:34 PM
Given the amount of weeabooism prevalent on these forums, a video aimed at deriding the Japanese will probably not have the same affect as it has for combat soldiers heading into battle with imperial Japan.

Yeah, pretty much. Except I'd like to think that I know I'm not being told the whole story when what I'm watching is a 10 minute "documentary" designed to give me insight on the minds of a strange people.

Sapphire
Wed, 02-01-2012, 08:36 PM
Understandable, since you are viewing the film from a 2012 mentality that is generally informed about the nuances of Japanese culture.

The documentary definitely poisons the well by the disclaimer at the beginning:

"Yes, there are Japanese in our country, but they're the good ones who work hard and believe in freedom like us. Now let us show you the horrifying lives of the Japs over in the Japan - our enemies".

The WWII American public didn't have the access to explanations of Japanese cultural iconography like we do - so the nonsensical battering of images that they see, of dragon worship, high tempo marching, and rice milling, can only be seen as demonic and freakish, and therefore a threat.

I mean, dayum, that production value. I felt like I was watching The Ring.

:3

Perhaps it's due to how close she looks to anime depictions that the first thing I noticed was the one thing she couldn't compensate for (and if she couldn't do it... probably no one can without sacrificing other things)...

... hair volume...

She flings her hair back for the back shots, and pulls it in front of her for the frontal shots. Both look good, but you can't have that much hair at both the front and back at the same time. Anime-hair is pretty crazy like that.

And if you DID have that much hair IRL.. to tops of your head will be unmanageable (and less good looking I'd gather).

I'm obliged to watch her "big, curly twintails" video, so I did. :p

That SFC could very easily also just be a PAL SNES.

Can't tell if it's the PAL version. It's more likely to be a Japanese NTSC SFC as the dude sounds American. But visually there's no difference between the EU PAL SNES and the Japanese SFC.

He said the 360 was in another room because his son plays with it. Doesn't eliminate whether there's another one boxed somewhere though. It's interesting that this guy collects consoles because "they're an awesome console", but I can't seem to see how he arrives at that conclusion when he doesn't really seem to play them much.

He probably played them more when they were the big thing on the market and there were new and innovative games for them.

I thought for sure there was a more recent "hottest babes" thread than the one last posted in in 2011, but it seems that's not the case, and I don't want to be a thread necromancer. I stumbled upon a .gif of a clip from this video, and I made it my mission to find it. I don't care what anyone else says, Kate Beckinsale is definitely one of the hottest women alive, so this video has to be shared.

The first Underworld was an enjoyable watch, but my memory might be confusing it with Blade. Sarah Michelle Gellar would have given her a run for her money in her prime IMO, but I will have to side with Kate if I go by recent google images.

I enjoyed the Underworld movies. They may not be "worth" watching, but, even if they are "terrible", it's entertaining to me. Besides, she's pretty damn hot in that skin-tight leather.

As for her other films... I've only seen a handful, but I do agree that most aren't that good. I know a lot of people that like "Serendipity", though that may just be for John Cusack.

I watched Underworld expressly to see KB in that skin-tight leather outfit, but it was a pretty bad movie.

That's cool. Things that pop into mind:

1) Durability: how durable the layer is, such that you'll know when to reapply before it's too late
2) Breath-ability: Will the shirt/shoes breath, or will it feel like you're wearing a plastic bag? Does it harden the fibres?
3) If my shirt resists fluids, does that mean it won't absorb any sweat from me? That could be both a good and bad thing.

From the website

"NeverWet™ coatings have remained under seawater for over a year and reemerged completely dry."

Certain things like skin oil and soap will wash it off, so you can actually rub it off just by using your hands.

Most of the compound in the stuff is no more toxic than spray paints, which isn't to say that it's safe. I wouldn't go about spraying this stuff on cookwares. There's need for more research into the actual safety of the product.

The coat it leaves is not clear either, you'll get a layer of filmy residue. Overall though, there's plenty of practical applications for a product like this.

I would also imagine that it wouldn't work on all surfaces. the shirt they used it on looks like Microfiber so something with a lower thread count might not give enough support for a firm layer.

Amazing new product!

So any hydrophobic solvent will dissolve the Neverwet layers (oils).

AMAZING, I NEED THIS!!!!
Too bad it probably doesn't work on paintings.

The acrylic spray shouldn't do anything to the oil painting... except stop it from drying out properly if it's still wet.

edit: then again, (with current info) I would never spray my figures with this stuff.. so I can see what you mean.

It's said that you have to spend 10000 hours at anything in order to master it. Assuming 8 hours a day, that's 1250 days, or 3.5 years of 8 hours of practice a day. I think the fact that it takes a lot less practice to be that good at MP FPS means it's not a worthwhile skill to "master".

They did a full flight yesterday reaching orbit with the second stage while the first stage made a successful "touch down" in the ocean. Proof of concept at full scale, they don't intend to recover it at least on this flight, but it hit the ocean at a safe speed, like this. No videos of that yet. Musk says they're going out in the ocean (in rough seas) to see if they can find it.

edit:

The new model also successfully deployed a set of landing legs before it gently splashed down.

SpaceX will be the first company to retro-rocket a first stage of an orbital rocket back to a recoverable and reusable condition. Cost savings are enormous. Also badass.

It's like 1950s pulp scifi where the rocket lands on an asteroid nose-up and the astronaut zaps up some aliens with his ray gun to rescue a bombshell space princess, then takes off.

Rocket first stages are all dumped in the ocean or smash into bits in Altai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altai_Republic) (edit: and some bits in New Mexico desert). 1949-present, but not for long.

That looks like they just played the video in reverse after the launch to show it "landing" safely.

Just kidding :p That's pretty amazing, being able to launch and land safely. Hopefully they can use the same system to safely land craft on other worlds, and not just to recover the launch rockets on Earth. As of the last Mars mission, they were still parachuting and bouncing landing craft and hoping it survives the crash.

Curiosity was a hybrid retro-rocket crane system. It's too heavy for parachutes. In general, Mars' atmosphere is too thin to drop them. Crane blasted it's retros and lowered rover to surface...then it crashed a ways off.

Right I forgot about that. I remember it was different from previous landings. They did use parachutes but they also needed the retro rockets because as you said the payload was too heavy for parachutes alone in that atmosphere. But it would be nice to be able to touchdown smoothly and calmly instead of any type of release and crash landing.

It's amazing what SpaceX is doing, though I'm slightly concerned about private business taking on endeavors such as space travel. Will we see "SpaceX" etched into the surface of the moon and viewable from Earth in the next few years?

My opinion has always been, "At least someone is doing it."

When the US gov't won't fund NASA, I'm thrilled that the Russians are still reliable as ever, and have great hopes for the Chinese and Indians.

NASA will just start paying SpaceX instead of Roscosmos once the Dragon capsule is man-rated. I'm also of the opinion that breaking the old contractors will be a good thing. Hamilton-Sundstrand and Alliant Techsystems in particular. They throw shitfits every time another company comes up with a cheaper and/or better design for their aerospace projects. The SLS (Space Launch System) is loaded to the gills with pork.

Elon Musk has his head in the right place. Make it cheap and reliable.

Disclosure: I don't work for any of these companies or their competitors. I'm just a fan of space exploration.

Great points. It's not that I think the government is the best backer for any endeavor. While companies like Google or even SpaceX
are advancing humanity and technology and exploration, when they become so big that they effectively control policy and discourse on their relative fields then it becomes a concern. If SpaceX works under the auspices of NASA, then that's ideal.

Crocodilians are exceptional ambush predators, just like the great cats.

This was as stupid as turning your back on one of the great cats. They're all opportunists. They'll go for it. People like to make a big deal about how you can just tape a gator or croc's mouth shut because they have a weak open force. But they're more than capable of doing a very quick death roll and twist your arm off in a few seconds if they do get you.

The more you resist, a natural instinct, the more effective their spin is.
