Yeah, this is getting ridiculous. Or rather already got. You can tell it's interesting stuff that's trying to go on, because this is essentially right at the core of the story, but that only makes it more frustrating and strange it's being slaughtered by all the flashbacks. The director must have skipped a few courses too many when he studied the art. Either that or he has zero pride and it's the producers that told him to ruin his own efforts.

I'm changing my opinion on fillers/flashbacks a little.. in some cases fillers are better because then i can simply skip the entire ep instead of being forced to plow through this crap in search for small glimpses of canon material.

When you have been looking forward to the "MONU-FUCKING-MENTOUS" event for a long time and then when it finally happens it progresses at snail's pace because of the flashbacks forcing you to wait more and more, it tends to annoy just a little bit. You can go and rationalize it, but it only makes you look like some academic who has no personal interest in the show itself but only comes here to scoff at the audience.

Barring that, yes, long filler arcs are preferable to stretching out the canon material because, even though fillers are terrible, I can just PRETEND the show went on hiatus and not watch them.

Stretching out the canon material ruins it, and there's no way to fix or ignore it like you can do with fillers.
