I remember Nami adding the string being a fairly big deal for Luffy at the time.

Maybe he lost the string at some point and being so stupid, he couldn't reattach it. Nami installing a new one would have been a similarly big deal under such circumstances.

It's easy to understand how Luffy is still so stupid when he was this bad already as a kid. He devil's fruit must have stunted his brain development. Good luck these pirates aren't much better or they could have tricked the treasure location out of him.

But it doesn't. You'd be able to see it if there was.

So either the hat is magic, are the animators are lazy.

And yet normally, it does.

Whenever Luffy has the hat down on his back you can almost always see the string around his neck.

Is this filler? It's really....boring.
At this point in the series, I don't want more flashbacks with Ace. I want to see what happens in the 'here and now'. We all know how strong Luffy's bond with Ace was and how hard reality hits him. Ace is dead. Time for the story to move on.

It's not filler. Pretty sure there's a whole arc of this.

I'm enjoying it. Luffy hasn't been amusing in ages due to the seriousness of the previous arc. I'm loving him as a kid.

As far as detail of the hat goes, I really like the touches to the hat in the intro. When it's resting on the rock, you can still see the marks of the 3 slashes Buggy put into it during his fight with Luffy in the beginning of the series.
