E3 2010 Mortal Kombat Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOSDJ7lZUtg&fmt=22)

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment just revealed that the famous fighting franchise will return on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011 in a new MK that will be played in 2D.

The game will include extensive online play, a "tag-team" game option that supports up to four players in two-person teams and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game." The game will also support classic 1 vs. 1 combat. The graphics engine is said to be brand-new.

MK creator Ed Boon is overseeing the project, which is in development at the new MK-centric NetherRealm Studios in Chicago. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding," Boon said in a press release, "mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

Yeah I saw the trailer several hours ago, and I'm just gonna quote some joystiq poster, since I share his sentiments.

I was going to post something long and boring that showed my excitement for this game, but instead I'll shorten it into something like this:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNTTTTT TTT

Yeah....

I'm pretty excited as well. I really want to try out this new tag team mode and see some new fatalities. I can't wait for them to release a demo.

The game will include extensive online play, a "tag-team" game option that supports up to four players in two-person teams and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game."The claim about the deep story mode intrigues me, given games like BlazBlue's considerably extensive one and the Soul Calibur franchise's broad (but convoluted) ones.

Fighting game story modes are for some reason really hard to do. I know most are just adapted from the arcade version, but it's a nice surprise when they put a lot of effort into them.

He didn't..

With that second vid and what seemed to be a fatality, I was fearing he did loose his trademark one. I guess it's even MK's signature. At least, many reviews on tv, news etc... almost always had that fatality shown when speaking of MK, or even just mentionning the game.

I never really played that much, but MK is the only arcade game I finished -17 years ago or so... already...- , but I only did it with SubZero. Because I like the fact you can freeze your oponent, and of course his fatality.

The second vid doesn't show a fatality, the first vid does, but that is his 3rd one, his first fatality is the classic one.

The latest issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine has revealed that God of War protagonist Kratos is to star in the PlayStation 3 version of the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot.

Kratos will have his own fatalities, attacks, and God of War-themed combat arena when the game launches in March. He won’t ‘be a playable character in the game’s story mode, though. Even so, Kratos seems like a perfect fit for the franchise, him being one of the most violent characters of the generation.

David Jaffe, director of the first God of War and creative director of the second, expressed his happiness of Kratos’ inclusion on Twitter moments after the news hit the net.

“LOVE that Kratos is in the new MK. So bummed he’s not in the story portion. Heard about it from Ed at E3 this year and had to keep super mum on it but man, ****ing LOVE it. He totally fits in that world.I **** you not- on some level I feel like all the characters I work on are alive and that I have a relationship with them and I can tell you, if I know Kratos- and I do!- he’s ****ing LOVING his time in the MK Universe. I bet he makes a **** ton of friends there. He should pull Zeus in and ****ing leave his ass there!”

When mulling how Kratos might dispatch his foes in Mortal Kombat, Jaffe suggested the Greek powerhouse would "f*** the s*** out of Sonya and Katana at the same motherf***ing time!!!".

"Hell," he added in a tweet that seems to have been removed, "I think Kratos should reach out and pull the f***ing MK Classic narrator into the game and gut the f***er. Oh, or rip the head off."

The furore has had the knock-on effect that Epic Games decision-makers Cliff Bleszinksi and Mark Rein openly - via Twitter - talked about getting Gears of War characters in the Xbox 360 version of Mortal Kombat.

Wrote Bleszinksi: "'Clay Carmine for exclusive 360 character in the new MK would be an awesome contrast to Kratos.' - I agree!"

"Must figure out a Gears char in MK!" he added.

To which Mark Rein responded: "Cliff: you know that Mortal Kombat game uses Unreal Engine 3, right? Just call Ed [Boon] and chat with him about it."

Mortal Kombat is out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March 2011.March 2011, hrmm. Releasing right after Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today releases a special extended trailer for the award-winning and iconic fighting game Mortal Kombat, featuring the playable warrior Kratos -- from the renowned God of War series -- exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Launching in April 2011 and developed by NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat is available for pre-order now on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will be available to consumers in three editions– Standard Edition, Kollector’s Edition and Tournament Edition.

The number of tournament editions is very limited with only 20,000 copies available in North America.

Players will be able to pre-order any of the above at North American retailers as of today. Specific pre-order programs include:

Gamestop: Customers who pre-order their copy of Mortal Kombat at Gamestop will get exclusive access to the Klassic Scorpion Playable Character Skin and the original Scorpion Fatality.

The brutal warrior from the acclaimed God of War franchise will have his own customized move set, fatality, and fighting arena, available to all original purchasers when Mortal Kombat hits stores.

Hrmm, so the release date is April 19, 2011 and not March. I hate retailer exclusives.

Any of you went for the Platinum trophy on SFIV?

No. I rarely fight online and I'm not good enough to beat the hard trials and challenges.

Man, that's awesome. It looks really good. And with Kratos in it makes me want to get it even more. I hope they did a better job then those cats @ Namco with the PSP SC: Broken Destiny's Kratos.

No. I rarely fight online and I'm not good enough to beat the hard trials and challenges.

I managed to do all the Trials but I'm stuck at Level 10 in both Normal Survival and Time Attack challenges. Supposedly you're to fight with Zangief or E. Honda, spamming the hell out of it but I can't manage. And it doesn't have that much online trophies, luckily.

I beat the Normal Survival and Normal Time Attack modes by using Zangief and spamming his Lariat over and over.

In a famous books and electronics store in São Paulo, Brazil Mortal Kombat’s producer, Hector Sanchez, presented the game yesterday to a Brazilian audience and revealed some new information while confirming some rumors and leaks. Here is a rundown of the new info that was revealed. (contains some spoilers)

• The online mode will be restricted to your area. E.g., if your playing from the west part of the USA, you'll only be able to play against people from the same region. Sanchez explained that this decision was made in order to prevent lags during online matches.

• The Lady In Red? "She'll be there", says Sanchez. I wonder what he exactly meant. Cameo in a Stage, Cameo in the Challenge Tower or actually playable?

• Kratos will be heavily promoted soon, which is why nearly nothing was released about him at the moment.

• Xbox360 will have some kind of exclusive content, rather than an exclusive character, which will be announced soon.

• All those Bios and Endings are REAL, and Hector said that "it was an act of 'bad character' from those who made these leaks".

• We'll see human Sektor and Cyrax in action, as he stated that part of the Story mode will take place before the Lin Kuei automation, but it wasn't clear if their human forms will be playable.

• He confirmed Cyber Sub-Zero, and said that he will have an unique set of moves and story. He said also that the team is not certain about his inclusion in future MK games.

•Sonya has her classic MK4 Leg Split Fatality! The combination will be [\/, \/, <, >, X] for the Xbox.

Unfortunately, what Hector said in Brazil got him into a ton of trouble so he now claims that it was all a mistranslation/misunderstanding.

He claims that;

A) The online will not be region locked.

B) Went very vague when it comes to human Sektor and Cyrax.

C) "Deconfirmed" Cyborg Sub-Zero, but we already know he`s in from the text files.

Ed Boon did an interview with the US Playstation Blog, talking about Kratos, his stage, ending, and such.

Ed Boon Talks MK9 Kratos to the US Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/03/24/kratos-vs-mortal-kombat-ed-boon-and-stig-talk-shop/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=kratos_stig_032411)

Yes, Kratos has a stage. And yes, it has a stage fatality. “It has the best stage fatality we’ve put into any Mortal Kombat game ever,” Boon said excitedly without further elaboration. The stage itself was inspired by the end of God of War III, when Kratos battles Zeus in the Chamber of Flame. “That fight had an almost fighting-game mechanic,” Boon said, “so when we saw that we thought, “It’s writing itself!”

The Lady in Red and Kenshi. Kintaro is planned as well.

The two we're adding are Kenshi, who players will recognize from previous MK games, and more excitingly we're adding Scarlet. Anyone who knows the history of Mortal Kombat will tell you that back in the days of the arcade - when they did just palette swap characters to come up with multiple fighters in the game - there was a glitch in one of the old arcade machines that caused the Jade/Katana/Milena female ninja to glitch and turn red. People always thought it was a hidden unlockable character and it wasn't, it was purely a programming glitch. They've always speculated and in fact it was the fans who named her Scarlet to begin with. She's no longer a glitch - she's an actual character, and she'll be coming pretty soon post-launch."

They won't be copy and pasted from characters already in the game - they're going to have their own unique fighting styles, moves, fatalities and x-rays - all the good stuff

Hector Sanchez said that the Lady in Red doesn't have an official name yet.

I don't think that's been decided yet, hence no "official" announcement on her name. :) Lady in Red is Lady in Red, for now.

He also said that the Kintaro info is wrong.

I get sad when I see articles that post incorrect information. :( #tigerbloodnotforsale

Shao Kahn seems like he'll be playable. His finisher was one of the ones that got the game banned in Australia.

and Ed Boon said this..

"For me it will be awesome if everybody will find that Scorpion and Sub-Zero worked together in past, just like Jax and Sonya did." said Ed Boon about that possibility to create some Tag Team moves "These are the classic couples that maybe hardcore fans will have fun to discover. We will put inside some special moves when Raiden will be with Shao Kahn or Liu Kang... these are the things we would like players will discover during the game"

Hey guys, here's an official statement on the online issues that many of you have been experiencing over the past week:

Thank you for supporting Mortal Kombat! Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, Mortal Kombat has millions of online matches being initiated worldwide every day, and we have run into some unanticipated technical issues.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are aware of the issues with the online gameplay – specifically with "King of the Hill" and Ranked 1 v. 1 matches - and we want to assure our fans that we are focused on resolving online issues ASAP.

We have added a “Technical Issues” section to our forum so please be sure to let us know what issues you are having so we can address those as soon as possible. Users will begin seeing improvements in online play over the course of the next two weeks. In the meantime please note that none of this will impact the single-player or offline multiplayer experience, and we greatly appreciate your patience!

So one fanbase can't use online... and the other fanbase is having technical problems? Damn...

Yeah, and 360 has another problem. The balance updates aren't being saved for offline play.

"As you may know, one of the most promoted features of MK9 was the balancing on the fly, without patches. For the most part, this has worked, as there have been changes in the past few days such as infinite removal and some move property changes.

However, there is one kink in this, and it's not exactly a tiny one. The updates DO NOT save to your hard drive. When you are disconnected from XBL, the updates do not take effect at all. They are all just stored online. This is a problem for when these updates bring in important changes."

So, as you can probably see, any tournament running Mortal Kombat on Xbox 360 would need all of the console connected to Xbox Live in order to make sure that they are playing the current version of the game. The video below talks more about the issue.

That's an absurd flaw. I hope they manage to fix it. I fear that may be present on the PS3 as well... but with the current issue with PSN we can't be sure. I hope they are working on fixing them as soon as possible.

Apparently, it's not a problem on PS3.

On the PS3 there is a save file for non-patch updates. First back-up this save file, then delete it. Now try one of the infinites that were patched out of the game, Sindel's infinite for example (it will work). Then restore the save file and try the same infinite. Now it will not work. It does not matter if you are connected to PSN or not.

360 does not have a save file for non-patch updates. That's why it is a 360 only issue.

MORTAL KOMBAT ARCADE KOLLECTION TAKES GAMERS BACK TO THE ARCADES
Iconic Arcade Games Will be Available on PSN, XBLA, and on Windows PC

Burbank, Calif. – May 12, 2011 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announces Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for PlayStation®Network, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. For the first time ever, the original Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy - Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - have been brought together into a single collection which will be available for download in late summer 2011.

"We are very excited to finally have the first three Mortal Kombat games available in one download package for long-time and new fans to play," said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. "With the release of our 2011 Mortal Kombat, and its return to 2D game play, players have been asking for these classic titles and we are happy to deliver them."

Developed by Other Ocean in conjunction with NetherRealm studios, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will offer fans the chance to play through the games in their original arcade state and rediscover all their favorite characters, fatalities and environments as well as relive some of the franchise's most memorable secrets. In addition, this new collection will feature online play, leaderboards, achievements and trophies.

An arcade-perfect port, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection brings players their favorite Mortal Kombat arcade classics for $9.99 on PlayStation Network or 800 Microsoft Points, to put it in arcade terms - 40 quarters ($10).

To help players create an arcade experience at home, GameStop will exclusively offer a limited run of the new Mortal Kombat™ Klassic Fight Sticks designed and manufactured by Performance Designed Products ("PDP"), creators of the sold-out Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition Fight Sticks, bundled with a code to download Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the Mortal Kombat™ Klassic Fight Sticks are available for pre-order now for $129.99 at www.gamestop.com (http://www.gamestop.com).

For more information about Mortal Kombat, please visit www.themortalkombat.com (http://www.themortalkombat.com), on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mortalkombat (http://www.facebook.com/mortalkombat) or on Twitter @MK_Mortalkombat

I already have Ultimate MK3 on Live Arcade. I'm still looking forward to MK2 though and 800 points isn't a bad price for all three.

Edit:
Before Warner Bros. acquired Midway, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was available on Xbox Live Arcade. Sony Online Entertainment in cooperation with Midway brought Mortal Kombat 2 to PlayStation Network. Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection has its own set of leaderboards, achievements, and trophies.

Players who purchased a new, sealed copy of Mortal Kombat 9 received a Kombat Pass. This one-time pass activated their game for online play, and is generally a countermeasure against piracy and the used games business for WB Studios and NetherRealm. Players who purchase the game used have the options of buying a new Kombat pass through Xbox Live or Playstation network, but with PSN's store still down, this became impossible. To make matters worse, players who did not redeem their code before the Playstation network went down were unable to do so.

To temporarily solve the issue, Playstation 3 users are allowed to play MK's online modes without a Kombat pass. This free period will last until the PSN Store returns. If you've been itching to try it out but hadn't used your Kombat code for whatever reason, now is your chance.

Booting up the game while logged into Xbox Live or PSN will get the latest hotfixes automatically if you do not already have them.

You can check your game's version number by going to the options screen and holding down the RB & RT buttons and hitting the Y button (on Xbox360) or holding down the R1 & R2 buttons and hitting the Triangle Button (on PS3).

NetherRealm Studios head and Mortal Kombat ko-kreator Ed Boon has revealed via his Twitter feed that all of the retailer-specific pre-order DLC released for the series' ninth installment will soon be made available as one downloadable, for-pay kollection.

The 7 Klassic outfits & 3 Klassic fatalities that were retailer exclusives will be bundled into one DLC package. Trailer coming on Friday.

For those who haven't been keeping tabs on said content, it includes "classic" variants of Ermac, Jade, Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, along with additional fatalities for Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

I do wonder though... why do the females get their hair in a bun? I don't remember them having it on MK2 or UMK3 (skipped the rest) [edit: on 2nd thought... I think this was hoy they appeared on UMK3 after all]. It would have been cool if they had left them with their current hairstyles and the klassic kostume.

Heck... Reptile looks way better this way.

Smoke appeared at the end... I wonder if they will include him as a bonus.

We still need Rain... I hope Scarlet isn't too expensive.

E3 2011: Ed Boon Interview (Stream) (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2011-ed-boon-interview/715189)

Skarlet: Character is created from blood and feeds on blood.
Skarlet is coming soon. She is expected in the next couple of weeks, but no exact date.
Kenshi is the next DLC character to release after Skarlet.
An "extensive" plan to really support the game with DLC that will go all through the summer. New characters and new "surprises" incoming.
At least 4 new DLC characters are currently in the pipeline (Skarlet, Kenshi and 2 more) and future DLC plans will depend on how Skarlet performs (how many times she is downloaded).

And here's a Skarlet gameplay video from Test Your Might.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are excited to announce the Mortal Kombat Season Pass which will offer Mortal Kombat fans an added incentive to buy all four new Add-on warriors at one time for a reduced price instead of when purchasing them individually. The first Mortal Kombat downloadable warrior, Skarlet, will be available for download starting June 21st and will be followed by Kenshi, Rain, and an unannounced new entrant to the Mortal Kombat tournament! Each warrior will come with a full move set, a ladder arcade story ending and two fatalities.

Available for purchase starting June 21st, the Mortal Kombat Season Pass will allow users to buy all four downloadable warriors as a package for 1200 Microsoft points. Each individual warrior can be purchased when they release for 400 Microsoft points. Each warrior will become unlocked for download as they become available throughout the summer.

Further, in order to allow for seamless online play with the new downloadable warriors, free compatibility packs will be required to download with the release of each new warrior. As an added incentive, each compatibility pack will come with two FREE klassic skins – the first of which are being released with Skarlet will be Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 inspired Cyrax and Sektor. Gamers who purchase the Mortal Kombat Season Pass (or individual Add-on content) will automatically get the free klassic skins when they download each warrior. Those who do not purchase the Mortal Kombat Season Pass or the Add-ons, will be able to download the compatibility packs for free and have access to the klassic skins as well.

Please note: The Mortal Kombat Season Pass is only available for purchase on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE. PlayStation users will also have full access to the individual DLC warriors (for $4.99), the compatibility packs, and the FREE klassic skins.

Yeah. Each DLC comes with 2 free classic skins. Also, Rain isn't a skin, but an actual DLC character.

Skarlet came with Cyrax and Sektor.
Kenshi comes with Smoke and Noob.
Rain comes with 2 more.
New Character in August comes with 2 more.

I put $60 in my PSN wallet yesterday, I now have $65 on there. That still won't be enough for all the stuff I want.

Cool water effects. They brought back his super roundhouse kick. Hell yeah! :) I'm way more hyped for him than Skarlet & Kenshi combined.

Well, damn... it really is going to be MK2 Kitana and Jade kostumes. I hope they add Kitana's Kiss of Death fatality, since one of Rain's fatalities makes them fat like that. I was looking forward to MK3 Sonya :(.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios present an all-new video introducing players to the latest DLC warrior, Rain, a power-hungry fighter who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. The third of four new downloadable warriors, Rain will be available on Microsoft Xbox LIVE for 400 Microsoft Points or $4.99 on PlayStation Network starting on July 19th. Rain will be available on the same date for users who have purchased the Microsoft Season Pass. Also releasing on that date will be a free compatibility pack featuring two klassic skins – Mortal Kombat 2-inspired Jade and Kitana.

And since Mileena is not there... expect this costume to be released for Mileena with the last character.

I doubt that. Mileena already has four kostumes. I believe that's the reason that they gave Kitana and Jade these, so they could have the same number as her.

Also, if they did give her another one, who would she be bundled with? The two people always seem to be linked somehow.

They could give Skarlet a MK2 costume. Specially since she was born from a glitch with the costume.

NetherRealm Studios and WB Games are hitting up Comic-Con International this week July 21th - 24th in San Diego, California with a purpose. Along with the finale of Mortal Kombat: Legacy webisode series, NetherRealm Studios is organizing a Mortal Kombat (2011) tournament at GameStop in the Westfield Horton Plaza at 503 Horton Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101, within walking distance to the San Diego Convention Center. The event will take place at 7pm on Thursday, July 21st and will feature exclusive Comic-Con prizing, the latest DLC characters Rain, Kenshi, Skarlet and the final unannounced mystery character. Also, several developers from NetherRealm Studios will be in attendance.

Heh, only two days after Rain is released. The character must have been finished a while back.

Just tried out rain, very very awesome, got some quick ~30% combos out of him, and a guaranteed ~37% xray combo. The klassic jade and mileena are pretty good too, better than I thought they would be. I still prefer jade costume 1, but kitana klassic is definitly the way to go.

Back when the first Mortal Kombat DLC character, Skarlett, released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE, a discounted “Season Pass” was announced for Xbox LIVE that purchased access to all four characters for a low price, while PS3 users were left to purchase each character seperately. However, this won’t be the case any longer as today, Freddy Krueger enters Mortal Kombat, and with him he’s bringing a DLC “Warrior Bundle” to PSN.

This new Mortal Kombat DLC Warrior Bundle lets players download all four Mortal Kombat DLC characters for $14.99. Skarlett, Kenshi, Rain, and Freddy Krueger sold seperately would run you $4.99 a piece, so you’re essentially buying three characters and getting one for free.

Wow, the European version of Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection was released with the 1.02 patch already applied. I am jealous. They fixed the main things that I wanted. Can now stretch the screen, can now use kombat kodes online in UMK3, gamma level reduced so it's not so washed out anymore, pausing leaving you unable to move, online lag, and some other stuff.
