How does this not have it's own thread already?

You better call Kenny Loggins, cause you're in the Danger Zone!

This, Community and Modern Family are pretty much the only things i'm watching right now.

The entire cast is great, but Archer really makes this show. The most recent episode with him being stuck in Russia consist almost entirely of Archer but it was still pretty damn great.

Loving Archer, can't wait for season 3. This is exactly the kind of 'animated' show I think we need more of in the US. I don't think they could get away with some of the stuff this show throws around if it was live action yet the animation style tends to give the characters realistic enough looking designs that you can't just write it off as purely fantastical animated nonsense.

As for the season finale: A 6 Million Dollar Man (awesomely cheesy show) crossover with On Her Majesty's Secret Service (one of the more controversial, and in my mind one of the worst Bond films ever)?

Loved it.

Sapphire

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen either of those movies, but I still loved the finale. It was really shocking and cool to see Archer have faith in his new love, despite the "evidence" against her. That's so messed up that she died, WTF?

Dark Dragon

I knew that the situation wouldn't last. Archer is a comedy and half the laughs is from him running around being a drunk womanizing asshole.

It's still the most messed up TV moment since Fry's dog though.

What was the reference? I never saw the show.

Animeniax
Mon, 01-30-2012, 05:40 PM
He made the reference at the start of the show when they're having the field agent meeting. When Malory says Cyrill is now a field agent, Archer mentions having to return through the Stargate, joking that he must be in an alternate universe/world if Cyrill is now a field agent.

Latest episode was awesome. I like Carol's ocelot as a recurring character. The racial references were crude but added to the charm. I think it's hilarious that Ray now fulfills the dual purpose of allowing them to make homophobic and handicap insensitive jokes. The Jewish black guy from "Diversity Hire" is one of my favorite guest characters.

Ryllharu
Fri, 02-03-2012, 08:15 PM
Yeah. This episode was easily the best of the (regular) season so far (the first of the pirate three-parter was just as good). This just felt right. Horribly intensive jokes, Archer not taking his job seriously, Mallory defending herself yet totally unrepentant after someone accuses her of something, Pam and Carol being...Pam and Carol, etc. Basically everyone in ISIS being their usual terrible selves, but somehow still managing to accomplish their jobs.

A buddy at work thinks they'll eventually turn Ray into a supervillain character after years of abuse about his handicap from the others. I think they put him in the wheelchair as a pretext to make jokes about handicapped people.

Same here, the Pam with the hardcore side doesn't work for me. I prefer her as the non-PC HR manager/blabbermouth with the large sexual appetite. I just noticed how incredibly detailed the background is in this show. The character animation is cartoony, but i swear some of the background images are either real world stuff, or like super cgi. I think it's the little details like that which make this show so awesome.

The Ray episode was awesome!!! Like Ryllharu said, the solution for crippled Ray was brilliant and dispensed with the situation in fine Isis form. I thought this was a great return from some weaker episodes, but also it was easy considering the locale (gay man in southern US), which sets up all sorts of jokes about racism, homophobia, etc.

Archer explaining why Lana couldn't pose as Ray's wife was hilarious!!!

If you watch the movie, I think the plot is that they both run from lives that were not of their choosing (her from a marriage and him from a career). I felt that at first too... I mentioned a few posts back how I felt it was unnecessary to include all the characters in every situation. But the reasoning for Pam to be there was hilarious and tied things together nicely with previous episodes, and her lines were awesome ("there's teriyaki?", "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.... yes."). Not so much for Cheryl, but I love her so I'm not too upset.

Also, it does seem a little early for the season to end, but they're including the Heart of Archness arc as a part of this season, so it will be 13 episodes after next week.

I want so much to be excited for more Archer, but I just don't see the humor in some of these promos. When I saw the Top Gun (what do you call it, a spoof, a parody, a homage?) promo I thought it was funny, but after seeing it a few times I don't really see how it's clever or funny. I think it's suffering from a dearth of creativeness, or over-used gags and characterizations that are growing stale. Watching the first 2 seasons is so much different (better, funnier, more witty) from the 3rd and 4th seasons.

Good episode, though I'm concerned with the scenery change. Not having the ISIS building as the backdrop will hurt the show, as it was central to a lot of the hilarity and situations in previous seasons. Krieger has the best lines in the show and the interrogation scenes are the best part of the show.

I wonder if the 5 minute montage at the end of the show was just an extended daydream or a preview of upcoming episodes.

Pretty sure it's a preview of upcoming episodes, and I'm not concerned with the scenery change at all if it does happen.

It's probably necessary at this point, but some of the best and funniest scenes occurred in the ISIS building involving the ladies' room, mainframe room, Krieger's lab, and Malory's office. It reminds me a lot of what happened with Children's Hospital. Great series, then they moved location in season 3 and the writing was terrible. How can you have a hospital show without the hospital? Hopefully Archer doesn't suffer from the change of scenery.

Animeniax
Tue, 01-14-2014, 12:13 PM
The setting matters. What's a spy agency without a super secret spy headquarters?

One thing I noticed about the comedy in Archer is that it's changed from clever little quick-witted comments to just outright craziness. The timing of jokes is what I really miss. Watch the early episodes, small pauses and quick responses made minor jokes into hilarious ones. Now the characters just say weird shit which is still funny, just not clever funny.

Yikes, here's hoping they get some renewed vision and fresh ideas for these new seasons, because 5 has been pretty bad so far. They've gotten too far from their roots, and all we get are some pretty obnoxious characters. Not lovable obnoxious like Homer Simpson, more unbearable obnoxious like Fox News pundits.

It's funny in its way but not the usual Archer funny from the first 4 seasons. The change of professions and purposes doesn't help. Cheryl as a country singer? Meh. Pam as a coke fiend? Was funny the first couple episodes; got tired after that. Archer is no longer a suave badass spy; now he's a bumbling fool. Lana the pregnant soon-to-be single mother got old even faster than some of the other bits.

The Simpsons was great early on, then sucked for a while, then was funny again, and I haven't watched any of the recent episodes. Pretty much all the seasons with Al Jean as exec producer are funny. That guy is a comedy genius.

The previous episode was pretty good too; they relied heavily on old jokes but it worked without looking like they were trying too hard.

I actually liked this latest episode more than I expected (probably had low expectations because of your post) but it really was short on laughs. As usual, Krieger's few lines/scenes are the best ones in the episode.

I think the show's prime was definitely during that string of episodes with the ear-ringing and tenitis.

I liked the early episodes best, seasons 1 and 2. I think one problem that may be from the success of the show, the writers/producers/voice actors are busy with other projects and all their creativity and energy goes into those works instead of this show, which is good for them but also a shame.

I was actually psyched about the first episode because I knew there was no way ISIS was legitimate and I thought Malory was finally getting her comeuppance. But no such luck.

Lana is the ONLY character on the show you still want to root for, and it breaks suspension of disbelief that she hasn't simply left already.

The last 3 episodes have been painful. It's just 3 characters taking turns fucking up, then bitching about what fuckups the other two are. Over and over and over and over and over.

Archer always was an asshat, but he was such a badass that you didn't care or mind so much. He always said the right (clever) thing and worked things out, for better or worse. Now he's reduced to a bumbling tool and his assholishness is unbearable. This has the added effect of highlighting the worst qualities of the other characters as they bitch about each other.

I'd love for them to further explore ISIS's legitimacy and get back to their espionage roots. All of these other endeavors have this "fish out of water" triteness to them that has turned well-liked characters into obnoxious idiots. I used to not hate Cyril.

I really hope they turn things around, instead of running a once great series into the ground. I didn't hate the last few episodes, but they could have been so much more.

But he's terrible at everything else. Drug running. Astronaut. Etc. So when he's not being a spy, he's just the worst person in the world. But he just assumes he's as good at everything else as he is at being a spy.

I really wanted him to die in the space shuttle crash when he wouldn't let Cyril land the thing.

I'd love for them to further explore ISIS's legitimacyWell, it became pretty obvious about halfway through the series that all of their missions seemed to be for Malory's personal benefit. So I wonder if ISIS was EVER a legitimate government agency.

I liked the few times they showed a more introspective side to Archer, like when his maybe-father died because of his selfishness. But then they fail to explore that, which I guess would be out of character for him but more meaningful than what they've done with him this season.

I really wanted him to die in the space shuttle crash when he wouldn't let Cyril land the thing.I didn't hate him as an astronaut, especially when he went commando and single-handedly took out the renegade astronauts. Not letting Cyril fly the shuttle is in line with his character, and though it was obnoxious, it made up for him restraining himself from fighting Cyborg Barry in that Alien forklift suit. However, they kinda made up for any idiocy when he was unscathed and everyone else was hurt from the crash. That was pretty hilarious.

I don't know that ISIS being Malory's personal spy agency was a story unto itself, more just a story device to give the show a background. If it does have more significance, I wish they'd explore that. What with all the tension between the world and Russia going on, next season would be perfect for them to make a return to spying in Russia.

I ragged on the series pretty hard in different online venues, but the last two episodes of season 5 are awesome. The dialogue is witty and well-timed, the story is funny, and the characters are at their best. Makes me hope well for season 6, but we'll see.

Well they went back to espionage but it's still not working. I think the writers/creators are bored or out of material, since they seem to be rehashing old tropes and lines and reusing characters and situations from earlier seasons (Conway, ruggedly handsome guy, and Barry returns next episode). The first couple of episodes this season were ok/good but the last 2 were pretty bad. The quick wit and clever banter are replaced with everyone complaining and Archer drinking alcohol and being a jerk.

And what happened to Lana? Is her only purpose on the show now to be a nagging old hen for Archer to be a dick to? Phrasing...

Very interesting how the series keeps reinventing itself. Not always in a good way or a bad way, but they can keep up the entertainment while keeping some things fresh with success.

Anyways, have only watched 2 episodes this season. Need to catch-up.
