omg omg omg
gotwoot down for over a day, finally it starts working again, only to have the first kaiji-episode ready. downloading now, watching as quickly as possible!

EDIT:

Oh my. This show is so freaking exceptional at creating this absolutely hopeless, horrifying atmosphere of failing and losing. The whole temptation-thing makes all the more an impact if you were dieting yourself at least once. Though, I have to say that it was disappointing to see Kaiji that unchanged, or should i say, back-changed. THought he´d be smarter and tougher after all the shit he endured during season 1.

I definitely understand the temptation thing. I diet regularly, so I know full well that once you drink a sip from the first can or take a bit from that yakitori, you're not gonna stop til you are fully or even overly satiated.

He never should have had the free beer, but I can't really blame him. His plan for escape is almost impossible at best. I'd criticize his actions if he had a solid plan, but since he himself knows it is a pipe dream, it really is hard to fight for. His greed and lack of self control might have actually opened up a better path for him with the gambling offer.

I hope to see some creative cheating soon. Not going to go all "it has to be 100% realistic" but you can do some sort of treatment as long as it hasn't been long since the fingers were cut off right? Or is that just wrong.

wow, i totally cannot predict if this "awakening" is supposed to be good or bad for Kaiji. On the one hand, it feels positive, because of how dull and removed from all the game Kaiji seemed, so it might trigger his "luck", as could be seen in season 1. On the other hand, there´s really nothing so far that makes me feel that Kaiji deserves to win...other than due to sheer luck. And that leader-guy didnt look nervous at all.

Though, in general, I really hope that Kaiji has a moment of true awakening soon. Not awakening in terms of gambling, but in terms of his past. He got through several life-death-situations, but now he comes off like a complete dumbass, as if nothing happened.

Eh, I hope it goes to skill games and some cheating soon, I find it hard to take the pure luck discussion seriously(I play poker on the side, and stay very far away from casinos/blackjack and the like.. lol), it's fine when there's an element of skill though.. at least it seems fair with no rake so it's EV=0. Then again it's probably rigged.

Janice
Thu, 04-14-2011, 05:40 PM
The theme throughout Kaiji has been that there are two types of people: those who use and those who get used. Kaiji isn't using anyone at this point, so we can assume the game is rigged and a few of the members are using him (this is Kaiji, that much should be assumed from the beginning). Also, the guy sitting next to the leader became a little upset when the new guy wanted to record the rolls in his book. It's likely that he's in on it with the leader.

well, ive got to admit that i didnt like that. i mean...there was no skill involved at all, no trick, either. oh well, maybe the boss did use some trick with that last throw, but still...

Kaiji is acting like a complete fool, which is extremely disappointing. i hoped that this game would proceed with the boss attempting some trick, but Kaiji, thanks to his awakening, instantly counters the trick and wins, so the story could go on with this one-day free time. But this Kaiji is nothing like the Kaiji from the end of season 1. Obviously, there are more episodes coming, so I really hope that this changes soon.

indeed, awesome episode. i think the only anime that got my emotions up that much as Death Note. Doesnt happen too often that I keep watching the opening of every ep, too.

Though I wonder why the foreman is so nervous. It´s clear that he somehow cheated, so he should be able to do that, again. Probably comes from the huge sum of money alone. As for how Kaiji´s plan is supposed to go along, I think he figured out the cheat-throw of the foreman and beats him with a "same"-throw. Well, cant wait for ep7.

episode 7:

http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=214805

EDIT:

Hm, I found this episode disappointed. It simply didnt emotionally grab me like the previous one. And too much of the happening only happens inside Ohtsuki´s mind. I realize that that was also the case when Kaiji fought the chairman´s right hand in the card game in season 1. But there, it was always a good mixture of mind and loud talk. Here, Kaiji does nothing.

Also, that "one moment" during which noone pays attention, which allowed Kaiji to get ahold of the bowl was poorly executed. I would have expected this scene to make a real, big impact on the watching audience. But there was nothing special about that one moment, well except that Kaiji did indeed grab the bowl.

Oh well, Im sure next episode will be better.

MFauli
Thu, 06-09-2011, 11:20 PM
okay, I think I have one big problem with this second season of Kaiji:

The first season was all about using the perfect tactic. With the exception of the Slave-King card-game against Tonegawa, every game was manageable by skill. Maybe a bit of luck was involved, too, but skills was a big part at any time.

This second season, so far, seems to be themed on luck. The dice-game was pure luck, and if it wasn´t for the other guy cheating, Kaiji wouldnt have had any chance at willingly winning the game. Now, they´re trying to win Pachinko. That´s 100% luck, again. And, again as well, the only chance of winning arises from the machine itself being rigged. Oh, and by cheating themselves, this time (though we dont know about the plan yet).

If it really was the idea behind the second season to make it about luck and cheating, then I guess I can live with it. But to be honest, I´m somewhat disappointed. The formula in season 1 was "game has rules, game seems like it allows for tactics, other people start bullshitting, Kaiji perseveres and wins". The formula for this season, instead, is "game has rules, game doesnt allow for tactics at all, Kaiji has no chance at winning by following the rules, other people cheat, Kaiji finds out and wins".

@Archangel: The old man has a strange feeling about him imo. When he first accidentially showed the code-paper to Kaiji and was shocked that Kaiji got a glimpse, I thought it was because he was secretly working for the Big Boss, hired to take away Kaiji´s money and getting him back into hell. So the paper wasnt related to the chairman of the evil company, but I still think he could be there to hurt Kaiji. We´ll see.

Archangel

I disagree, in every challenge so far there was never such a thing as a sure way to win. There was always a way to use your brains to increase your odds but there was also always a need for luck, that's why it's called a gamble.

Only exception would be the circus balance challenge, but in that one Kani wasn't the gambler, others were gambling on him instead.

You call weeks of self control and planning by Kaiji before the chairman match luck?

Though I have to wonder why Kaiji´s final plan is. Right now it seems that he relying 100% on his luck. My guess is that whatever last resort-plan Ichijou wanted his men to get started, is what Kaiji found out about long ago and actually used in his favor. Because I cannot imagine how this is going to end with pure luck. Or maybe Kaiji counted on Ichijou using that last straw and will cause his own downfall by doing so.

Meh, looks bad for Kaiji ./

Xrlderek
Thu, 08-18-2011, 04:01 AM
relying on luck.. well. He is using many tricks/methods to increase his chances, so I wouldn't say he is relying 100% on luck. Even if he increased the chances somehow so that it'd be 10% to win for each ball or something crazy like that, you could still call it pure luck but it would be overwhelmingly likely that he'd win eventually.

the ridiculous length to which this game was dragged out to is so fucking annoying, but I can´t help but feel that it is worth it in the end.

As for this episode, the only way out of losing to the Bog is (and I haven´t read the manga, so it´s just personal speculation) that Kaiji makes a call towards Ichijou, or even the chairman, about demanding Ichijou to do what he intended to do earlier, but was stopped by, forgot his name, "Kaiji´s partner with sun glasses": He asks for Ichijou to hit the machine! Sounds stupid, but something "could" happen, and Ichijou would know as much, so he´d refuse to do anything. But then the chairman would make another phone call, and BAMM, Kaiji´s hope for victory are resurrected. Well, and if everything went in his favor, hitting the machine would then give one ball enough power to overcome the blowing air.

Well, that´s the only idea I could come up with, any alternatives?

Archangel

I think the bogmek arc has been awesome so far. Yeah it's stretched thiner plastic wrap but somehow that doesn't bother me because they've managed to keep a sense of suspense and desperation throughout most of it, especially ever since Kaiji's battle versus the man eater started.

Besides, i don't think i'll ever get tired of rooting for the ultimate underdog that is Kaiji.

I was actually looking forward to more Kaiji, but seriously, what´s the point after THAT end of season 2? No matter how awesomely he finds a way out of deadly danger, he´ll still fuck it all up by being a dumb piece of shit. A hero that doesn´t learn at all is a boring hero. I think I heard that season 3 will air in 2015, although honestly I cant wait that long I'll probably just read the manga.

There is plenty of character development Kaiji, it just isnt consistent because there is also depth. Not to say that Kaiji is in any sense DEEP, but the characters are certainly more realistic.
