BoC made a bunch of "Got_(insert word that's not Woot here)__?" banners, those are currently up there. Feel free to make your own Got"clever word that goes with pic" banner.

Other words (#gotwoot, gotwoot, any artsy word/phrase) and stuff you want in your banner are fair game. I believe in you peeps! We are going with the Got___ theme for now.

I wasn't so sure of this idea when I read it, but you managed to pull it off with arguably even better results than the first sig.

Guess filling something in between the girls and having them placed more apart got rid of the negative space problem towards the edges.

While "GotStapler" would have been ideal since that's what she's known for using, it's right for that banner since it actually shows scissors.

I'm sure it's just as bloody dangerous in Hitagi's hands.

@David - I think anyone who has watched Bakemonogatari knows whose skirt that is a millisecond after they see it.

Keep scissors, it sounds better. "Got scissors?" isn't common here, so maybe it is a cultural thing after all. Ironically enough, I hear "Got Stapler?" every now and again because really no one carries those when you need them (or not). Regardless of our expectations however, we always try our luck and ask. :S.

I've been using Arial Narrow, though it's not that big of a deal if you use something else. Everyone is welcome to make banners. The only requirements are:

1. Dimensions of 900x198
2. It's not eye cancer.

Just a question:
It's fairly easy to access to all gotwoot fansub banners. Very nice to be sure I do not miss one, as I love them.

For the forums however, since it's a php script, you can not get the source file as easily.
Unless someone gives the link to the folder-EDIT I got the folder, just not readable EDIT-, or at least the full name of one of the pics and the naming convention is easy, I might miss some good banners.

Can someone help me?

I'd really like to, but I don't have PS anymore and I can't use GIMP properly. I don't even have the font for the banner, since I am using a new laptop with none of my original files. I found a good image (appearance, not quality) and did my best to clean it. Here is all I got:

The Saber one is beautiful, mainly because I used that same render on my previous sig, haha. I think a few touchups to it and it will be perfect. The Michiko one is pretty good too, though the front part of her hair seems jagged. The Yin one doesn't look like Yin at all, and the background is... I guess they're supposed to be rock formations sticking up? =P The others are pretty good, but those three are my favorites. Oh, and the Eva one is good, except the part on the arm is a little too transparent.

As far as anything from me, I don't think I'll submit one. Haven't had any motivation recently, and it was hard enough making banners for this forum (too much space to work with sometimes). Actually, some of the banners I have here I look at now and I think "How did I ever think those were that good", haha. But, I might poke around a bit later on and see if I can come up with anything for you to criticize.

Nah of course, I appreciate your opinion and it was very useful. I still like my original version, tho I can see what you mean with the image's quality. So I took your advice and found a nicer, and more current, Asuka image. Had to mess with the background quite a bit to get it to flow nicely but luckily I had done a nice enough job the first time that it didn't take much rearranging to match the new Asuka. Spent more time blending and while I'm sure I could mess with it for another hour I'd rather just post it and get your opinions on it.

Well, I'm personally not too proud of it, but Luci said it's pretty good, so I'm submitting one. The text placement was pretty much the only thing I could do with it. I had opted to go textless, but it seems it's a requirement. Also, borderless feels so strange to me. Anyways, let's see what you all have to say about it.

Why not try working on two or three instead of cranking them out like mass production? Some of these are very well designed.... but it seems like the ones with a darker background work nicer with the style you're doing. Maybe try doing some brushing around your focus.... or blur the background a bit. Anything so its not "anime character---stock photo---text". Some adjustments would definitely help it to feel more like its one image. Maybe color balance it a bit.

Umm only other advice I could think of would be to try and give it a uniform direction. You want the flow of the banner to move with the foreground and the background toward the same direction.

And maybe try putting some gradients in your text like Alhuin did.

Thanks for the advice; half of what you mentioned (color balancing, direction, extras besides stock bg and render) I've already applied to most of the new banners. Just like everyone here, I am totally out of practice, and I have lost nearly all of my photoshop resources save for an old collection of renders.

Brushes, Fonts, Patterns, C4D's, everything. So thus far all the banners I've made have just been simply to re-associate myself with lighting and Photoshop. The awesome stuff will come later if I can keep my motivation up.

Yea, a few of the text's have font gradients, and others not so much. If I have time before this contest deadline, I'll go back and work a bit on each banner individually to work out the kinks.

As for the number of em, I don't know if you've looked on the Gotwoot fansub page, but the submissions are downright horrendous; with the exception of a couple clever ones and this one dude who looks like he copied and pasted wallpapers into banner form. So I figured unless you and Alhuin jump in, Sapphire's going to need some banner content.

Luci, I totally forgot to comment that I'm loving all the recent banners. The Saber ones are, of course, my favorites, but that Motoko one is just damn beautiful! The contrast between her purple hair and the blue background... I'm in love. I already talked to you about working with the text a bit more on some of them, so I won't criticize that here, but I will say that I have to agree with Kage on the "darker backgrounds fit your style better". I didn't really notice it until he pointed it out, but all the lighter-background ones seem too... bland I guess? Those are the ones I feel like are very apparent "stock background... anime image... text... etc." that Kage mentioned. But keep up the great work as always!

Also, @Kage: The "quality over quantity" sentiment is very true, and I agree with that, but I have to side with Luci on this one. Most of the banners linked on the contest page are horrid. I don't mean to judge anyone, but I feel like I cranked out better things in MS Paint back in the day than some of those entries. Don't get me wrong, everyone has their starting points, and I'm all for encouraging people to "keep at it", but these are going to be hosted on a public website, and are meant to draw people into the group. So I'm all for submitting as many as possible from talented people so Sapphire has an easier time choosing multiple images to host. That being said, there are actually some pretty good ones submitted, and I hope they are included in the rotation, even if they don't "win" the contest.

That may be right. I can't say since I lack the expertise to recognise technical proficiency in PSed artwork when I see it.

I can only imagine that the same goes for most voters though (since it's not done by an elite panel of PSers), which means the submissions that go through are ones that simply please them the most (be it aesthetically or otherwise). Nothing inherently wrong with that I suppose, since this was never a technique competition in the first place.

Now if it was a "popularity contest" because the names of the authors are attached to the submissions.. that's something I'd be more pissed about.

Kage, both of your banners were added to the site before. This list (http://imgur.com/a/KB576#0) is banners that were added to the site.

All this was in the contest posts. Since your banners were put in the site, they were up for staff nomination.

Staff could vote for as many banners as they wanted. I was aiming to put the top 5 or 10 banners for public poll. 15 staff voted, and any banner with 5 or more votes got put up in public poll. 14 (http://www.gotwoot-subs.net/?p=4654) banners are up for the public poll instead of 10 because the numbers on the bottom end of that range were really close.

The focus here was to make something simply likable, or funny, so essentially anyone could participate in the contest. So not so much of a Photoshop skills showcase as in these forums, which is why we accepted stuff that looked like screenshots (and why we had them up before).

As for the discontent, yeah, we can't all agree. Anime fans are weird anyway. I mean, the number one banner right now (and one of the most highly nominated banners by staff) is this (http://imgur.com/a/KB576#45) weirdly misshapen butt/vagina thing. Previously, I made an "anime poonani vs. real poonani, which is better" poll and the results were 50/50.

There were no names when I put up the banners for nomination. That actually worried me a bit, because I was concerned with the people who submitted a way proportionally higher number of banners overwhelming the other people who didn't submit as much. Luckily, it worked out pretty well. Anyway, this contest has an assload of participants, but not including you guys, only 2 guys I recognized (only 1 guy got his banners put up). Even I'm not able to name all of the authors of the banners without checking and I've scoured the entries (a whopping, I don't even -know- how many (http://www.gotwoot-subs.net/?p=4546) entries) at least three times. I'm certain my staff has no clue who did what banner (with small margin of error).

PS—As for picking what went up in the site in the first place, we tried to be as impartial and fair as we could while keeping the well-being of the site in mind. Some individuals would submit 17+ retarded banners and 1 good one, but we added the good one anyway. So it was nothing personal...

Also, Kage... I wouldn't take things so personally man. I'm surprised even one of my banners made it to top 14, especially seeing what else made it. I mean, some of the submissions are pretty good (I especially liked the "GotMail" Pokemon one that looked like it took some work), but then there are plenty that look like a simple screen cap with gradient-overlaid jagged text that baffles me. But I understand it. You, Luci and I... we all look at banner making (and anything else related to Photoshop) from a technical view. We find a render (or make one), find a background, add effects, add borders, add text, add effects to the text, etc. We spend a lot of time and effort on creating something that we find extraordinary. But to an average anime watcher that knows nothing of Photoshop, they're not going to see all those things; they're looking at what picture pleases them the most with the best use of "Got___". Like Bill said, this wasn't a contest on technique. If it were, I'd have no doubt us three would be fighting for top right now, haha.

While I agree more or less with that (since that's what I said before, after all), it's not like technique doesn't necessarily shine through as a good banner (it does). What I was trying to say before is that the appearance of a visually pleasing banner can also be made with a better quality raw that needed minimal touch-up in the first place.

In my mind, it's perfectly possible for (Good raw + less technique = okay raw + lots of touch-up), but you'll have to convince me really hard to make me believe that a (screencap + less technique + funny joke = good picture and/or good technique).

I was having to decide between a funny joke and a good picture when I was voting in that poll, and in the end I settled with the better picture. My reasoning is that the joke works in the short term, while the picture's aesthetic value remains persistent every time you see it.

I believe you misunderstood my comment about technique, but I think you grasp the basic idea I had anyways. Regardless of skill or technique, most average voters are going to vote for whichever banner depicts their favorite series, or character, which is why I was saying they aren't going to pay attention to every tiny detail. To top that off, the use of "Got___" is also going to play a part, not because it's necessarily good, but because it's funny for it's intended purpose. This is why simple screencaps are doing so well. So my comment about technique not being evaluated wasn't to say it doesn't shine through as a good banner, just that within the target community, technique is only as good as what's popular.

At the other end of that debate though, I completely agree that good technique doesn't always = most work involved. There are plenty of banners on rotation that are probably just wallpaper crops with simple text applied that look amazing. Even a lot of sigs that are posted here are results of the same method. It's all about the quality of the source image.

My only gripe is.... if you're going to have a banner contest isn't the idea to vote on who MADE the best banner? Not who cropped a high quality image? It doesn't take a photoshop master to look at something and realize they don't deserve to win anything for putting in little to no effort. And really what they're doing is stealing someone else's work and claiming it as their own.

Yeah the pokemon one is probably my favorite of the simple images..... looks like nothing was done to it, could be wrong tho.

There's a bunch of others that are really nice too.... a couple you can tell had some work involved, Luci and Alhuins definitely included.

Actually, I'm not sure what your point is. All of your posts seem to be a misinterpretation/redefining of the rules (which no one else seemed to have trouble understanding).

If you don't like it, feel free to throw your own "quality" banner contest on here, where the only banners that win are the ones you agree with. I'm sure the mods wouldn't mind.

Yeah I guess those are ones I agree with. Especially since youre offering a prize you think you'd have some kind of rule like: "you actually have to do something"
