Banners for new forum style

I'm gonna do it. I really am. I'm going to redo the forums as vbulletin 4, and that right soon.

But a big problem I have is that I need images to put in the banner rotation. And that's where you come in!

See, I've got no art skills. Me and photoshop are like bleach and ammonia: you mix us up, you get toxic vapors and nothing you want.

So I'm looking to you, the community, anime-themed (gotwoot-specific or just anime generally, either way) banners for the rotator. They should be sized 980x150 px. Maybe?

Anyway, I've got a dev instance set up that I'm working on the styles for. If you want to see what you'd be fitting it into, I'll pm you a link.

For now, I'll pretty much be accepting anything that looks reasonably good. I'm looking at a couple weeks timeframe before I do the actual upgrade, though I'll continue to add banners and such after the fact.

A little more on requirements:

980x150 is the target resolution. I might use taller or shorter, but I definitely won't use narrower.
please prefix your username in front of the filename, eg: complich8_myawesomebannerthatdoesntexist.jpg
If you're going to mention an IRC channel, either list no network or list both rizon and gotwoot
scanlines are optional. borders should try to line up with the theme at http://devforum.gotwoot.net/forums.php
consider filesize... if the banner's too big it may take visible load time, which isn't great looking
consider interlacing your file for a faster apparent image load

I love it ... but it seems like it's a bit on the heavy side at 273kb. Maybe interlacing's and turning it jpeg is the answer to that ....

Complich8 will prolly address how we approach this with the public soon. But I think advertising Rizon is important because that's the main reason why new people visit the front page... if anything leave the server out and just put #gotwoot or put both servers.

Well, I am more comfortable with a larger canvas to work with, so I might shell out a few if I have the time. With the holidays and my work schedule, I can't make any promises, but I see that comp mentioned he still may add banners after the deadline, so we'll see.

However, I was curious... if I remember correctly, someone made a vector of the GW logo awhile back. Could that person provide a link and/or a PM with the file? I feel like I'd want to use it if I made a banner.

Although, I guess if the forums change, so too will the logo....

EDIT: Okay, I was bored tonight and tried one out. Not used to making banners, so I tried to think of it like an over-sized sig... therefore I might have used too many effects and/or probably shouldn't have obscured the render so much. Like I mentioned in the sig thread though, I am way out of practice, so comments are definitely appreciated.

@Lucifus - Edward and Hei/Yin ones look great. The others look a bit strange due to the combined art styles.

I agree with Shinta on that one, when you combine renders from different sources you should make sure the art styles match at least a little

Kidding aside, combining that many characters from different shows with different art styles is indeed a challenge. I think the best way to go is to find similar poses viewed from the same angle. That should make it look less artificial.

Both the theme and the art style match the render, it's the one i was gonna use.

The Rei render looks awesome. So much can be done with that because it fits the banner format perfectly.

The only thing I don't like with the Whitebeard one are the fonts. They look a bit rough and playful in comparison to the overall banner feeling.

I'd second both the suggestions about art style mismatches and Sapphire's suggestions about irc channels... either both networks or no networks ... since apparently we've got like 12 "official" irc channels now.

But yeesh, you folks are prolific >_<.

Another ground rule: could you prefix your filename with your nick, to make my life a little easier?

Anyway, while the theme is a work in progress and I'm still trying to resolve a couple issues and get the blue-ish default icons replaced with more theme-appropriate ones, you can see how the images integrate with the theme on http://devforums.gotwoot.net/forum.php, which may help your design process a bit...

Sorry, I didn't mean to mean that you have to advertise IRC on every banner. You don't have to advertise the IRC servers at all on any of them. Only if you want to of course. With most of these banners, the awesome art just speaks for itself and doesn't need an advertisement plastered on it.

I like the Yin one the best. If you change the font you used for "# gotwoot" to something more subdued and classical so that it fits Yin and the BG better, it would be absolutely perfect.

So I finally made the text change to the Yin banner. I'm not sure if this is what you meant by "more classical", but I tried.

@Munsu: I took a look through the list and there are definitely some series in there I was interested enough in to always want to make a sig/banner... so, not making any promises, but I can check around for some renders and if I come up with something good I'll post it.

Right now, I'm in the process of fixing PS... I got CS5 finally but there have been some problems getting it to work.

Edit: I fixed CS5 and played around with it some. Came up with a new banner that I think looks pretty good. As far as I know, it's not from an anime... at least, the source of the render doesn't list it as such. So it may not meet the requirements for use... but I'm going to post it anyways and see what people think.

Over the past couple weeks I've been slowly working on making banners of Canaan, Guin Saga, and Serei no Moribito. I wanted to make a Monster banner because it's my favourite series of all-time, but I've never found any good images for it. No idea when I'll finish, since I'm notoriously slow at making stuff, but at least I've got some things in-progress.

@ Alhuin: Even if it's not from an anime, it's gorgeous. I love the colours.

Looking back on it, it seems a little washed out... I may go back in and try to bring out more colour.

I've kind of lost motivation for any more banners though... I've already stressed out the same style and techniques on all my current ones (with the exception of the latest one I posted), so every time I try to start something, I get lost. I have ideas, I'm just not skilled enough to match what I see in my head... I'm sure some people can relate to that.

I've definitely noticed the trend of all the Haruhi, F/SN, Naruto, etc. banners, which is one reason I did something different with that latest one. I have some more renders lined up that I want to use... I just have to get around to making something.

I'll be looking forward to more of Kit's banners though.... and anyone else that decides to make some.

Also, I'm thinking about appointing someone the keeper of the banners (and giving that person ftp access to that directory). It'll take the burden off me a bit and make a cleaner path to maintain those than I've got right now. Any suggestions for someone to take on that role?

No one has said anything bad about it, so I just assumed it would be the default. It might need to be adjusted, since the way it looks now, it seems like the top menu bar extends ever-so-slightly further than the banner. I'm thinking just having the black side border go all the way from top to bottom, instead of cutting off at the orange border, would make it look better.

I sort of like the framing effect that having the black border stop at the colored ones provides. I dunno.

But as long as it is the right resolution, works with the theme and looks decent, I don't have any real objections.

Not an anime yet, but I read somewhere that there are plans.

In the render community I frequent, Touhou Project is a major focus; I came across many good cuts, so I made a folder and kept what I liked. I just decided to use one for this, since it was amazing.

How would it look with her name moved upwards to the top 50-75% of the sig (the second quartile counting from the top, if that makes sense), and having #gotwoot underneath it, but indented relative to her name?

Just brainstorming of a way to use that negative space.

I added the irc addresses simply to try and balance the text. If you all have another idea, I'd be willing to try it as well.

I like the feel of that one. The only other thing I can suggest is see what increasing the transparency of the text (or changing its colour/size) yields. It may help make them less contrasting (with the background), less eye-catching (until we look for it) and maintain the focus on the render at first glance.

I did a new one for evangelion and redid the one for One Piece since i had already done it for the old forum and thought it was good enough to warrant an update

I added the irc addresses simply to try and balance the text. If you all have another idea, I'd be willing to try it as well.

Al, I'm not sold on this update. The first version had a greater flow between render and bg, with more interest and depth to the bg. So I added that one. Despite what the others are saying about negative space, I like that it contrasts from the other banners in that respect. I know, I'm being picky and arbitrary, but that is my prerogative as banner admin. ^_^

The clannad one is too simple, the Yoko one needs a better font and the berserk one is just there because i want to make a berserk banner and can't find any decent renders

Do without the non-gotwoot text on the Yoko one and I think you've got a very strong entry. The song lyrics just look really out of place. They're unnecessary and put the image out of balance.

Kirino over Kuroneko? For shame...

I like the Asuka one.

Try the elfont gothic font or something similar for the Yoko one. I agree with Ryll that the lyrics should be removed.

I like the BG for the Asuka one, but I think it could use a better and more updated render.

I don't think you needed to center or move Yoko at all, and the "gotwoot" text was fine. It was the lyrics that needed to go.

You're obsessed with getting rid of any negative space. Leave some in sometimes.

I'm thinking maybe some light erasing around the render so it blends better with the background? Though i got to say i also like how the edges of her hair look clear cut from the background like that as well.

I like this one a lot. It's very refreshing and livens up the page whenever it's loaded. Normally I see a scowl or something on her face whenever I see a scan of her. Who knew she could be this cute.

The v1 Reimu looks better after it's pinned up in the banner section than as a standalone.

I like the balance you have here. Miku really stands out, and the color scheme blends very nicely. It comes off very clean. Nice work.

I don't think you need any text, but if you want a light-colored "gotwoot" in there, put it along the long horizontal grass blade on the right.

It's off center. Use the tip of the finger as a center guide and it should look more balanced. Aside from that, I like it.

The first one certainly has a different atmosphere. Hard to decide whether it's appropriate or not. I might personally prefer a bit more traditional ones, like the last one, but it's not bad as such, quite interesting in fact. The second one has a sort of window feeling with the decorations left and right being in the foreground even compared to the render. I can't say I'd be a fan of the feeling.

It's been awhile since I've completed a banner (although I have attempted many). I'm still a little shaky with the overall product, but the idea was asked for (though I don't remember by whom), so I proudly present a Mirai Nikki (http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6503/alhuingotwootbanner14.jpg) banner. It probably needs a lot of improvement, so if anyone thinks they can do something better, I can send the render to you. Feedback is also appreciated.

As for my thoughts on the banner Alhuin, I quite like it. (I'm viewing it on very low brightness screen so the pic is darker) I think you use this 'cloud' effect way too much, though. I'd like to see something different?

I agree with Bill, whatever made that scene so memorable in the anime isn't there. If it isn't there, there's no point in using that as a render.

I'd scratch the project entirely if i was you.

I see what you all mean though... It was something I figured I'd try since I obtained the render. I knew it didn't look as "crazy" as the shot in the anime, but I contributed that to the atmosphere and the music.

As for the "cloud" effect... I understand what you're getting at, but it's not an intentional move for every piece. Most of the time, the background I use has fog in it, or is a space picture (viewing the atmosphere). Sometimes I still use sky backgrounds. I've tried using city backgrounds, but I haven't found the right render to compliment that. But anyways... it's not that I'm not trying something different, it's just the effect seems to present itself consistently.

Ideally it'd be good that new banners get circulated a bit more than the older ones (until after a timeframe, then they get classified as "old" too), but I think that might be a bit hard to implement.

I've been thinking of trying to make a few new banners, since most of the ones up now are almost three years old, but I wanted to make sure submissions were still open, and if there were any new guidelines.

Also, is there anyway to get a link to all the banners that are in the rotation? If I make something, I want to shy away from anime we have the most of. Plus, I think I want a couple of mine removed (due to quality), but I don't remember everything I have uploaded.
