It looked to me like Aokiji opened a hole in his chest to allow the spear to pass through, to avoid the blow. Otherwise, I have not idea why he wouldn't have gotten stabbed.

I theorized in the manga section a while back that he might have possibly disassembled his own ice body before impact thus negating any permanent damage.

He did try to destroy the wall, though. He only managed to put a dent into it.

Whitebeard was already dying before the battle, then he got stabbed through the chest. It's reasonable to assume that he's holding back because he only has a little left in him.

As for Jose, he was probably where all the other devil fruit users in Whitebeard's army were.

That said, I do agree that Oda's writing is a bit lacking for the interactions in this battle.

He should have attacked the foundation of the wall, where the stonework that the wall is attached too meets the ocean floor. If you destroy the foundation, the metal wall would just drop into the ocean.

And yeah, after watching the Yibis version, it's much clearer that Aiokiji wasn't saying no to Whitebeard using Haki.
